Weeds are opprtunistic survivalists, finding their way quickly onto bare and thin lawns. Two natural occurances can bring you weeds; Lawns thinning seasonally with the heat of summer, and the pre-emergent from spring are expiring to allow seeding.
An unnatural reason to have weeds is often self inflicted with the best of intentions when homeowners scalps the soil at the edge with power trimmers. Weeds will find bare soil. Turn the trimmer so the line is up/down for a clean edge, not sideways to cut across the soil surface.
