The Marvel Team Up and Punisher cover were done by Elliot Brown and he produced several others (Spiderwoman, Doom, Dazzler, and Nightcat). The actor on the Punisher cover was a friend of his that he met in high school. I believe he died from a hereditary heart disease at a young age.
"You can't judge a book by its cover" my grandad used to say. And it was for that reason that he lost his job as chairman of the book cover design awards.
@@craigcharlesworth1538 I never judge a book by its cover. I've learned it from not judging people as well. I'm always willing to try anything once and if I like it then that's just a bonus
My unmatchable number 1 spot for ugly covers: 2014 ASM #1 by Humberto Ramos, with the unmasked Spidey. The ridiculous pose, the anatomy is not correct (left leg), the expression of complete stupidity on Peter's face, and he seems to be suffering of strabism. There nothing right about it, I can't think of another cover THIS ugly.
I just got that Action Comics with the crying Kid for the same reasons as in your video. It is so stupid and maybe even controversial? I had to own it! 😅
Or the infamous Star Wars Christmas Special. DK III: that's one ugly baby, looks like a middle-aged man. Avengers #392 is from an era in Marvel history when there was no real vision and things were just falling apart.
I absolutely love the Wolverine Revolver and X Force covers !!! Every time I see them cheap I buy them because of how friggin funny they are. That DK3 is SO SO BAD ! I 100% will have to add it to my collection
Nice list. I would add the infamous FF 375 to the list. Ryan's art isn't asymmetrical or disjointed, like many on your list, but it's just way too much "hey, look we can make the FF look the same as the rest of the 90s extreme books with foil, boobs, guns, and jackets with pockets". Even the Torch has a jacket with pocket on in the cover. It doesn't make any sense for an FF cover. I'd also add Dazzler #21. I think this is a photo cover. It looks like they took the actress from a failed TV series pilot, put her in dark lighting.
i don’t understand how frank miller got so bad. He’s made some really atrocious stuff as of late. Like that wolverine cover. He has to be trolling everyone
Mike Mignola did the covers for a Lobo series called "Unamerican Gladiators". I like his work, but the cover to issue one was really bad. The cover to Batman/Maxx Arkham Dreams Lost Year Compendium was really bad. I find this one more sad than anything because of the amazing artist Sam Kieth was. Clearly he just can no longer draw like he used to.
Bro, Aquaman 16, with the lead character fighting Wonder Woman on top of some domed city! Our Atlantian is drawn so overly ripped, which isn't necessarily ugly, but what the hell is going on with WW's anatomy?! Her figure is drawn weirdly, and the pose doesn't help. And her face, nothing pretty about it. It's almost like the artist doesn't know how to draw women.
Do you know what makes that Savage Namor cover even funnier? It is the fact that the most recent ML Namor figure released is based on that illustration .
I think your going way too light on Liefeld. You might be like me and grew up on his art but you could make a top 200 list of the ugliest worse looking cover by him alone. Only 2? Only reason Im saying your going too light cause you keep saying anatomy and Liefeld is the king on not knowing what that word means. Like his newsest Lady Death cover where her right arm looks like its the length of a leg or maybe it has two elbows.
Those Frank Miller covers may be the ugliest covers I've ever seen on comic books anywhere, any time! They turn my stomach! But all the other ones are just plain bad too.
Why are you so surprised with the Miller covers? Everything he has drawn in the last 20 years has been terrible. He seems unable to draw in any other style than Sin City, which started really great, but it calcified over time and it just went bad.
I'm a big Frank Quitely fan, but that issue of X-Men with Emma Frost on the cover that everyone else in the world went gaga over...yikes. I always thought he made her look like an 80 year old Asian woman. Just not a good drawing.
I knew exactly the issue you were talking about and I picked that issue up when it came out over 30 years ago. I feel like that whole crossover storyline had a bunch of garbage artwork in it.
My fiancée just got into comics for 2 reasons: Nightwing & The Joker: The Man Who Stopped Laughing Tom King April Fool’s cover. 😂😂😂 I HATED the cover at first! After this video and seeing her excitement when she showed me her copy, I see it with new eyes. It’s so bad, but now I’ll have to pick it up every time I see it.
I got that Punisher 57 off the newsstand, and if I hadn't been reading that title at the time, the cover would never have enticed me. The newsstand didn't have the WANTED POSTER. It was only that horrible photo. I'm not saying that issue would've killed the series, but if it had been a standalone story, no one would've bought it off the rack.
Look at the early Captain america comics by the time they got to the 300s in the 80s. The covers looked super cool, and to me, they didn't look kinda generic, I guess.
I set up at a show and had Captain America 1 by Liefeld. The first guy to come up picked it out and said, "Oh I need this." I had $5 on it and almost just gave it to him. I could not believe someone would buy it.
If you're going to have Action 457 on the list, you might as well include Alf 48. LOL And speaking of ugly covers that are somehow valuable, I'm surprised that you didn't have Tec 880 on the list. Never understood the fascination with that cover.
@@ryebaldy8479 Right!?! I still don’t quite understand what is bad about it. I mean, compared to the other covers on this list, Morbius #2 belongs in The Louvre. 🙂
Punisher 57's interior cover is as bad as it gets. Of course, I dispise photo covers as a general rule. However, the outside cover is awesome. Especially the Frank Castle wanted poster on the back. Wich is why there is a 9.8 of it hanging on my wall. 💀💀💀
Great list, but top of my horrible list is X-factor 61, part of the hot X-tinction Agenda storyline it preeceds an iconic Jim Lee cover and Whilce Portacios excellent run. Just look at Cable! His face! The fact it looks like he's on the toilet. Insane.
I think some of these, especially with the X-Force 48 and the newer Wolverine, The publishers feel "well we spend all this money on this high end fantastic art that nobody buys anyway, We might as well put some s*** on the cover and see what happens... " And guess what? Everybody wants it lol
I was at the LCS and came across the Wolverine Revolver book and instinctually grabbed it. I then stared at it for 30 seconds looking at all of the horrendous detail. Chuckled at how bad it is in person and put it back. I cant buy bad art.
As a kid I was so disappointed whenever there was a city or building photo background and a drawn character. I thought Marvel was just rushing deadlines and rather than have a drawn background they slapped in a stock city photo. Hated then then, still hate them now.
