I’m a foreigner living in Jakarta with my wife. This economic crisis is hitting everyone really hard. We don’t neglect the fact that the virus exists, but the measures put into place to tackle the pandemic seem to do more harm to people than good. Lockdowns will have a devastating effect in people’s lives in the months ahead. Businesses are closing down and many people are losing their jobs. I had a business during the first lockdown and I had to close it down because it was impossible to make any money at all. We waited some months until things got better and by August we reopened the business in another location. Everything looked great again until the governor of Jakarta decided to put us in lockdown again and not allow restaurant to have people dine-in. The month of September has been horrible for our sales. I have 4 staff and all our profit had to be used to pay their salaries. If this month of October ends up having the same results, we will have no choice but to let staff go. I want to hire people and help them during this time, but lockdowns are killing businesses. They are not profitable! I feel the pain of the Indonesian people for not having enough money to live. We are all very stressed and anxious. I’m lucky I don’t have any children yet, but those with children must really going through hard times. We must stay strong together and hopefully governments will implement different measures not as drastically as lockdowns to have a less impact in the economy and still being able to save lives from the virus. I love you Indonesia 🇮🇩

This segment maybe okay as a story, but not much as an objective investigative reporting with concrete and constructive contribution to the problem at hand. How those specific individual stories are calculated into and become the actual macroeconomics analysis of Indonesia's economy is not depicted in the report. So at the end, it feels more like CNA is only fuelling the insinuation that Indonesia will somehow become a failed state. Why the constant and repetitive comparison between this pandemic with the 1998 crisis where the basic difference between the two is easily identifiable. 1998 was a crisis in Asia and for Indonesia was also partly caused by her own mistakes of corruption and collussion and the mishandling of its economy at that time that leads into a political and social crisis as well. While the Covid-19 crisis is not caused by Indonesia herself. We together with the rest of the world are the victim of this unprecendented virus spread. Even with the best economic policy and law enforcement, the question is how will be Indonesia's chance of economic survival in the midst of a global recession? So again, this video is like forcing a subliminal message that there is a looming political crisis in Indonesia that will challenge the current presidency. Is there a hidden political agenda from this kind of video?

Let me just share one more problem: there are corruption in lower level hierarchy as well for the distribution to the needs such as at RT/RW level. No clarity of what actually given and can be taken used by the crook to take whatever given for families in need, this might involve some political agenda as well. There need to be system in-place to audit and make sure everything been placed correctly. For example, one instance one ministry gather data for people in need of Covid-19, i myself gather the data from the community of my wife in Jakarta, the assistance never arrived at the door. And there are instance of people that "having" taking more than people really in need and we never know why.

This is the problem with Indonesia. Unlike Singapore or Malaysia, the wealth gap in Indonesia is too huge. If Indonesia had a total lockdown like Singapore or Malaysia, what would happen to those poor people? On the other hand, Indonesia only had large scale 'social restrictions', which to be honest hasn't worked that up to this day, but still lets poor people work, although not all of them. The government did hand out some money to people who made less than a certain amount, but it really wasn't enough. A huge nation, separated by multiple islands, added with a wide wealth disparity, is certainly a task that any government would have a hard time handling.

Many people work as day to day job, they work today for today's food. But i believe Indonesia in better situation due to our President that really really work for Indonesia and really care for it's people.... But alas, Indonesia has 250 mio people, and still many corrupted leaders that still see some opportunity to corrupt and do it at these time...about the word "enough help" do you have the money to feed them all? or maybe half....do you? there will be no such things as enough at this time, we do what we can and improvise.....we share what we can share.... at least let's share support

Watching this and the one about the Philippines just break my heart. Money not reaching the poorest people who quite literally have no food or shelter as a result of either loosing their jobs because of the COVID restrictions or just because the business’s they worked for have ceased to trade. People scavenging around market floors during curfew looking for “wasted” vegetables. The Government having corrupted civil servants who hand out the money or food that was supposed to go to the most needy, but instead end up going to the civil servants friends and families. What an awfu, dreadful mess and once again, it’s the poor and helpless who burden the brunt of the suffering. People in the numbers of 30-40 being forced to share a 4 x3 meter single room, without any social distancing or p.p.e equipment to at least try to protect each other from contracting COVID. I could go on and on...and I wonder why more charities from the wealthy west cannot help those worst off. It’s all so, so sad, unfair and totally depressing. God bless them all.

The problem in Indonesia is that a lot of people who work everyday as sole business to support their family and do not pay taxes as their income is below the threshold are therefore not on the government book and are not registered as being poor and no help is available. I believe that a mandatory tax registration of every family should take place every year with income earned and when problem like covid-19 arise the money can be deposited in people's bank account or available at their "Desa" so no one will miss out! The government cannot help if 1/2 the people are not known to be in need!

I can predict Indonesia will lead south East Asia by 2050 and Malaysians will come to Indonesia for better jobs, job loss is happening in US and all west countries, poverty is everything so don't underestimate yourself, happiness is the key and the Gold medal for happiness goes to Indonesia ♥️🇮🇩

This Covid-19 ruins my life too as others. I only live by myself with no others to help. I lost my job since June and now in a struggle on finding one. I have to choose between pay rent and providing meals. If this pandemic lasted till next year, I must save the money to pay rent. Therefore, now I only eat one banana/day to survive. And, if my budgets for rent and meals are already all spent, and I don't have a new job, I will be homeless too like others. I still have my mobile phone so I can apply jobs online or so the company can easily reach for me if I get accepted. And I think if I must die because I don't eat for days/months, well let it be. I will gladly accept it.

I remember in 2005 when I left Indonesia to Singapore.... I lived in Karawang near Bekasi, the citarum river and its slums reminded me of Dharavi in Mumbai back home..... I am not saying India is better off than Indonesia but the vast wealth gap astonishes me in both countries especially Indonesia! Central Jakarta felt like a different country in all together compared to Karawang or Karawaci! The constant flooding and no proper drinking water... Yughhh!!! We had to leave ALL our furniture behind due to floods! Corruption in both countries need to be curbed! I still love Indonesia and India! I consider Indonesia as my second home! As an Indonesian myself, i think the thing that made this whole covid 19 hit our country really hard is how we handled the situation the first time it occurred. A lot of Indonesians didn't take covid19 seriously, thus the virus infection got out of hand. The whole economy now get a huge blow because we need even more time with strict social distancing caused by the amount of new cases each day. I hope a lot of people take the health protocol more seriously. I know we can no longer stay at home because we gotta put food on the table somehow, but please pay more attention to hygiene, because that's the only way we can wake up from this nightmare faster. I really hope that the vaccine could come out and be mass produced soon tho. That is, imo, the only key to stop this pandemic and start to build back our lives, not just here in Indonesia but all around the globe. Stay save and stay healthy y'all, we got this.
