Covid-19 Inquiry: Helen MacNamara targeted in Cummings' 'misogynistic' messages gives evidence

The former top civil servant criticised by Dominic Cummings in expletive-laden WhatsApp messages is set to appear before the Covid-19 inquiry.
Helen MacNamara, the former deputy cabinet secretary, will become the latest pandemic-era senior official to face questions about the response on Wednesday after two days of hearings revealed the dysfunction, indecision and dithering inside Boris Johnson’s government.
The ex-civil servant, who left the Civil Service in 2021, was namechecked in proceedings on Tuesday as Mr Cummings denied he had behaved in a misogynistic way during his time in Downing Street.
WhatsApp messages shared with the inquiry revealed that Mr Cummings had labelled Ms MacNamara “that c***” and said he would “handcuff her and escort her” from Downing Street.
“I don’t care how it’s done but that woman must be out of our hair - we cannot keep dealing with this horrific meltdown of the British state while dodging stilettos from that c***,” he wrote.
Ms MacNamara, who took up a senior role at the Premier League following her Civil Service exit before leaving after less than two years, played a key role in the Covid response as one of the country’s most senior officials.

Johnson didn’t ‘run’ anything. He abrogated all responsibility (out of boredom, bone idleness, ignorant entitlement) to unelected Spads, who trashed all norms of cabinet government. But, it also speaks to the shockingly low calibre of cabinet members, that the perception was that the cabinet leaked like a sieve. Cabinet responsibility now means less than nothing! Not only should a ‘4 Nations approach’ have been an absolute priority (shocking that it wasn’t!), but opposition shadow ministers should have been brought on board to widen the skill set and broaden the pool of knowledge. This was a National Emergency.

How cheeky, to state it was crucial for your colleagues to spend time together due to the nature of the culture they were working in, yet think it was not essential or as 'crucial' for families to spend time with their loney, sick or dying parents and children. How self-important you saw yourself above others, utterly deplorable.

As they point out in the Guardian the inquiry is showing more of a failure at the whole state level. No pandemic preparedness planning so they were pretty much forced to make it up on the hoaf. No plan or abiluty to rapidly expand testing capacity, no way to control panic buying, Department of Health kept No track of number of care homes. Leaves government with very few levers to pull....

This guy is leading the witness. Suggesting what might have happened then suggesting what her answer might be. He's studied all the literature in front of him and reads paragraphs from other statements. That's leading her into what others have said and asking her opinion. He should have asked her opinion with no reference to other opinions. He keeps saying overconfidence, so his mind is made up already about something. Is this another stitch up. This was a pandemic never known to anybody in government and the civil service. There could have only been confusion. Someone being confident in the medical profession is not exactly wrong.

Just because Cummings is a misogynist egotist doesn't mean what he is saying is not true? Can see it coming.....the whole inquiry will end up focusing on Cummings and ignore his truths.....snow job done once again!

The primary dictionary definition of the expletive used to justify that charge is for an “obnoxious person” not the vulgarism for the female anatomy. Given the frequency with which most coarse-mouthed Brits deploy it, against people of both genders, it’s thin gruel indeed to use it to buttress an accusation of _misogyny,_ literally woman-hatred, on a single citation. But that’s scarcely the contemporary point, is it? Why critique a man’s sympathy immune self-importance, their intellectual vanity, their discursive waffle, their ignorance of science, their haughty certainty that anyone except themselves and the great number of women they employed, was an utter moron? Far more admirable to just fast track to saying they exhibit an -ism or are an -ist.
