Its funny, in 2022 Judge won mvp over Ohtani and their reasoning was, "Judge had a record-breaking 62 hr season". Ohtani was pitching and hitting but because judge had 62 hrs, they gave it to him. Now Ohtani is having a never been done season in MLB HISTORY, they still wanna discredit him. Make it make sense. People just cant accept the fact that a japanese player is the best baseball player the game has ever seen.

It's not that people are discrediting Ohtani. You aren't giving Judge enough credit. Do you not understand that Judge's bat is far and away better than the rest of baseball? Like it's not even close. Judge wRC+ which takes into account runs created is 3rd ALL TIME. The only players in the history of the game who have a higher wRC+ are Barry Bonds and Babe Ruth. Judge's OPS is 134 points higher than Ohtani. Judge's OPS+ is 36 points higher. They are not even in the same universe as hitters. What Ohtani is doing is great. It isn't Aaron Judge great.

Judge is becoming one of the greats in baseball if he keeps it up no doubt about it. However, Ohtani is a one of one type of baseball player. Ohtani is the face of baseball and its not even close. If we look at field numbers, maybe there can be some sort of debate with Judge performing a bit better in some categories, and Ohtani does better in others. If you look at the total picture and the overall VALUE that each player brings to the game of baseball, again, Ohtani is the runaway winner. Ohtani makes people watch baseball and spend on baseball related things unlike no other player. He brings in a global audience, captures the interest of people who do not even watch baseball or has lost interest in the game along the way. He brings in millions of dollars in advertisers/sponsors like no other.

Has anyone in history of the MLB hit 56 homers before? Yes, 14 different times. Has anyone in the history of the MLB knocked in 139 runs? Yes, it's happened more than 100 times. Has anyone in the history of the MLB hit .323? Yes, like a gazillion times. Has anyone in the history of the MLB gone 50/50? Not until Shohei this season. Will anyone likely do it again? Probably not. If you look at the historical significance, Shohei is have the better season, you can't ignore that. Judge is a monster and is having an exceptional year, but we've seen similar and even better years from other players. No one has or can do what Shohei is doing this year.
@TheRexrapper
@TheRexrapper 4 дня назад
You are minimizing the hell out of what Judge is doing and using basic stats when we have advanced stats. Judge is having one of the greatest offensive seasons the game has ever seen. That's why he leads the league in far more categories than Ohtani.
@SidKim-e3c
@SidKim-e3c 4 дня назад
@@TheRexrapper I'm not minimizing what Judge is doing at all. I said he's a monster and having and exceptional year. I do think you're minimizing the hell out of what Ohtani is doing though. And like many other people, you are minimizing the impact of stolen bases. Judge has more walks, because once you walk him, he becomes much less of a threat. In fact, he just becomes a prime double play candidate; whereas Shohei will mostly likely put himself in scoring position. Ohtani has 169 singles and walks. He has stolen second 45 times. So essentially, he has hit the equivalent of a double 27% of the time he reaches first base, putting him scoring position. That's why he leads the MLB in runs scored. And what about the 10 times he's stolen 3rd base, putting him in position to score on a fly ball or a grounder to the right side? Anyway, I'm using basic stats because Covino is referring to those same basic stats to argue that Judge is having a better season because he says he's "old school" like that. And like I said, Judge is have a spectacular season, but is it record-breaking? Is it historical? If you look at OPS+, Judge's season ranks 12th all time. I'm sure he'll go up a bit when the season's over, but who remembers the 10th greatest OPS+ season of all time? No one. Who will remember 50/50? Everyone. Joe DiMaggio won the AL MVP in 1941. EVERYONE who knows baseball remembers him and that season because of the 56-game hitting streak. Do you remember who won the HR crown that year? Probably not, but it was Ted Williams who had 7 more HRs than DiMaggio. Do you remember who won the batting title that year? Ted Williams again at .406, a whopping 49 points above DiMaggio. But all everyone remembers is Joltin' Joe and his 56-game hitting streak because it had never been done before and will likely be never done again. That's the status Ohtani's season is in...not 12th best or 7th highest or 21st most, but never-been-done-before-and-will-never-be-done-again status. In my eyes, that's the difference.
@TheRexrapper

@@SidKim-e3c Steals only hold value when your teammates get hits or sacrifice flies to get you in. If you are getting steals and your teammates don't hit, it holds little to no value. A steal in context isn't more valuable than a single or even a walk. A single could score a run. A walk is getting on base which isn't getting out. A stolen base is just the runner advancing. Unless they are stealing home base, they rely on their teammates for it to hold value. I say all of that to say, Ohtani's steals don't hold anywhere near the same value of Judge's overall offensive game. Even if you include Ohtani's hitting stats, it isn't comparable to Judge. That's why I say you are minimizing the hell out of Judge. The truth of the matter is it isn't even a comparison. People want it to be a comparison because it's something to talk about and they are considered the two best players in baseball. But in reality, it's not close. If they were in the same league Judge would win and the voting would be a blowout. Also, just because Ohtani did something that hasn't been done before, it does not mean he had a better season. I don't care about what people remember. People remember Mcgwire hitting 70 but who won MVP? It's funny that is your argument because when Judge hit 62, Ohtani fans minimized that by saying it's been done before. But will people remember it? You bet your ass they will.

Stolen bases are good but overrated. They don't hold more value than even a single. They don't hold more value than even a walk. Why? A stolen base just advances a runner. It doesn't even create the possibility of creating a run unless they steal from home. A stolen base is literally dependent on someone else doing something to score the run. A single could at least potentially score a run. A walk is not getting out. Stop acting like because Ohtani has 50+ steals that it makes him more valuable than Judge. It doesn't.

@@TheRexrapperthis is a silly argument. What's the difference between a solo homer and a grand slam? The hitter does exactly the same thing but the RBI they are credited with are completely determined by what their teammates did ahead of them. Stolen bases are closer in equivalence to a double than a single because you're immediately in scoring position.
@TheRexrapper
@TheRexrapper 3 дня назад
@@drexeldragon1723 There's a commonality with the homeruns argument. They BOTH produce runs. A stolen base does not produce a run UNLESS someone after them does their job. @drexeldragon1723
@drexeldragon1723 3 дня назад
@@TheRexrapper it's really silly to be like "a double could produce a run therefore every double, even when people aren't on base, is more valuable than a steal." What you said about steals requiring teammates to produce runs could be said verbatim about doubles. A double cannot produce a run unless someone else already got on base. A single and then a steal with no one on base is literally the same thing as a double. Speaking of runs, Shohei has 10 more runs scored than Judge. But I guess that doesn't matter because his teammates had to do stuff for those. The thing is, teammates need to do stuff in all team sports. This isn't home run derby. If you think it is and the only thing that matters is home runs then sure, Judge is better.

Who’s dude on the right? Rich? I checked, the Yankees have played 43 inter league games. That’s it. That’s 27% of their season. I would love a universal MVP but they play inter league less than 30% of the season. I understand why they have an AL/NL MVP, but the MLB should ALSO add a universal MVP.

Never mind the fact that Ohtani being strictly a DH this season is so he can rehab from surgery. If a pitcher can win the MVP without ever having to pick up a bat, then a DH sure as hell can win the MVP without having to field a position.

As a Dodger fan. Ohtani is closing the gap. IMO. As of now, Judge is still having a slightly better season. Ohtani needs to pass Judge in HR. The RBI is a wash because batting at number 1 and batting at number 3 is a disadvantage to Ohtani. If Ohtani reaches 60/60, then we would have to revisit this conversation.

Their seasons aren't even comparable. Judge is having a far better season. Judge's WAR is 1.9 higher according to baseball reference. 2.5 higher on fangraphs and 2.6 on baseball prospectus. If they played in the same league, Judge is winning MVP in a blowout.

@@TheRexrapper At this point it’s an opinion of what is more important. Is someone doing something that has never been done more important? How important is base stealing? Why are so many people talking about the 50/50 if it’s not significant? If both players were to switch teams, will they have the same impact? Judge is hitting in a ballpark at home that is more HR friendly than Ohtani is. Ohtani is playing in a tougher division as well. The 2nd place Padres can easily win the World Series and the Diamondbacks are defending National League Champs. Dodgers, Padres and the Diamondbacks are all in one division and heading into the playoffs. So it is still subjective and not as far apart as some would think.

@@jonk8337 I disagree. The only reason it is being talked about so much is because they are the two best players in the game and since both are most likely going to win unanimous MVP's, they need something to talk about. Judge's season is not being accurately reflected by the media. They know this season is an even better than the season Judge won MVP in. The only thing Judge doesn't have over that season is 62 home runs. Everything else is better across the board and that was enough to dominate the MVP voting WHEN OHTANI PITCHED. So how is it even a question when Ohtani doesn't pitch this year and Judge is even better than the year he won MVP? If people were being honest, Judge's season is FAR superior to Ohtani's. That's no disrespect to Ohtani. That is more of an appreciation for what Judge is doing. You can't mask that by saying Ohtani got 50 home runs and 50 steals which hasn't been done before therefore it's a conversation. Ohtani is a DH. These guys who hit 50 home runs or got 50 steals also played the field. They didn't sit on the bench for half the game. Judge is doing what he is doing while also playing the field. It doesn't matter if he's playing it average to slightly below average because Ohtani doesn't play the field AT ALL. So the fact that Judge plays a demanding position and yet his hitting numbers are FAR superior to Ohtani's, it shouldn't be close. It shouldn't even be a conversation but the media and Ohtani fans will.
