Cow/calf mob on late December winter stockpile on Jan's farm. It really is amazing how much winter stockpile we were able to grow with our early August rains after 9 months with no rain. With the amount of residual, we are leaving behind, this farm will explode in the spring with early new green growth. Leaving some behind always pays you back in the spring by being able to start grazing sooner than folks that take all the forage down to the ground.

In north central PA, the deer find the hay stored in any open barn and will eat TMR when there is appreciable snow. The deer probably go into the commodity bay to select whatever grains or minerals, too.

Hello 👋 Greg. I’m really looking forward to being able to meet you in June at the homestead festival. My wife and I have just got the early bird tickets. The cow/calf mob is looking great per usual. Thank you for sharing, 40 Shades of Green Farm, west Tennessee

Good day Greg, don’t tell those cows they need corn, they look tip top! What is it you say… manage for what you want? Guess you don’t want to supplement with high concentrate, some folks do, until they can’t any more.

Thanks for the video! It sure looks great there. This warm weather makes it beautiful working outside. I was looking for you at the game last night. Have safe travels back home. We are heading out the door soon to work on the fence. I’m hoping to get all the posts in the ground today. It got down in the 20s last night but going to be in the mid 30s for the high.

Happy New Year, Greg. Are people crossing Red Devons with South Polls? That would be interesting.

That looks like heaven! I just saw a post on Season-Long Stockpile by Running T Farm. Looks like a great stockpile method, growing one stockpile pasture all season. I wonder if you ever tried it?

Greg I wouldn't complain if we got your rainfall amount since July we've gotten 35 - 40 inches of rain heavy grass covers like what you have that wasn't grazed or cut for silage 50% of it is rotten at the base of it heavy grass covers doesn't generally keep anyway high rainfall beats it down land is so wet and water logged I've since sheep poaching ground like cattle would sinking almost to there knees. I would be more than happy if got your rainfall amount cows have been housed since the 1st of October just about managed to keep other cattle out till end of October just got to wet it's going to be a long wet winter. Happy New year all.

Considering the severity of drought you have had the pasture grass has done exceptionally well. Pretty amazing the amount of stock pile there is. Cattle look great! You have a real nice 2023 calf crop. The bull calf walking from right to left mid screen at 9:29 is exceptional. Dang he’s nice! I’ve seen a few others that look worthy to be herd bulls when they mature. South Pols never cease to amaze me with the condition they keep on stock piled pasture with supplemental hay when needed in the winter.

Grass might be green but all nutrients has gone back into the roots as the grass goes dormant for winter. Hay and baleage taken in summer has nutrients locked in when cut at prime. Would like to see cows condition mid spring

That’s great misinformation that was spread for many years. I remember back in the 70’s the PHD forage specialists saying your exact comment. Cows would starve to death eating winter grass, what a joke. Our cows have thrived on winter grass for 30 years and we love not feeding as much hay as well. What do you think ruminants are for 1000’s of years before folks made hay? Yep, winter grass, good stuff.

good to see you're doing great even in a dry year! the cows are fat and sleek and they aren't walking on dirt. better to spend your energy moving them than unrolling hay!!!

You said you don’t wean the calves, are some of them not getting bred when you expose the bulls to the cows?

Great video Greg. Can you please make a video detailing how you would operate if you were in a more southern climate? I am in west-central Texas and interested in doing what you do but we do not have these cool season grasses.

You have great weather for cows, seems you have very low costs. Would I be able to keep cows year round in Canada doing your method of moving them each day and if so, what part of Canada ? I'm trying to figure out a 10 year plan to get in to farming. Also if you know of a book that would help me, do what you do, but somewhere in Canada, that would be much appreciated!

It is mud season here and I see farmer's cattle all muddy and cold and thin and it's only January! They are out in a field where you can see their toes and there's no stockpile. Sad.

When you never wean heifer calves do you have some that are still sucking when the cow has her next calf? Does it make robbers out of some of them?

This is awesome. What are your top five types of grass you like to seed?
@gregjudyregenerativerancher
@gregjudyregenerativerancher 9 месяцев назад
We don’t seed anything. If I had a bare field with no grass, my grass species would consist of Fescue, Orchard grass, Timothy, Bluegrass and Big Bluestem.
