The Cow Dung Run is always one of my favorite races of the year. Held on private property in Lyndyll Utah, it provides lots of fun sandy terrain with some tight singletrack along the Sevier River river bottoms as well as wide open fast desert terrain.
My day didn't go well as I broke my rear brake pedal completely off the bike during a brief encounter on the start. I limped back to the pits and fixed it with an old spare and decided to go out and just try and have some fun and see how many racers I could catch since I was about 5-10 minutes behind the last wave.
After Loop 1 I had gotten up into the Amateurs and a few of the older Experts. I had a good pit and said hello to my family, and about a mile after the pits, I got sideways on a road crossing which pitched me over the bars. I landed on my head and back and heard some crunching and immediately knew something was wrong as I was in severe pain. I could move my neck and legs but had major pain right between my shoulder blades. Turns out I have a burst fracture of my T4 and some other small fractures of the transverse vertebrae and a broken rib. I'm very grateful it wasn't worse and I will make a full recovery and I can't wait to get back on my bike again.
Unfortunately my son Josh also went down on the Pro Start and injured his shoulder, but my son Benj finished in the Pro class with a second overall so I was grateful to see him have such a good day.
