The watch looked so tiny in the palm of my hand - the parts must be miniscule - Kalle has the hand of a surgeon !

Well done. Love these updates. Assume you had to make sure the balance adjusting screws were not frozen? Would hate to do all that work and installed the balance and you are unable to turn the micro adjusting screws on the rim of the balance wheel for proper timing.

As usual, fantastic. This is what I live for when restoring watches. The hunt for original era parts, the resurrection of something people would just discard. And the end product, wearable with patina, or new looking depending on the wishes of the owner. Best wishes, from Vancouver, Canada.

Great to see another update Kalle! It’s great to see it all coming together. I’m pretty sure that balance wheel is made of glucydur alloy, as opposed to brass, which is much softer.

I stand corrected, I called it brass alloy because I wasn’t sure 😄

As a fellow watchmaker with over 10 years of experience, I have a question regarding the polishing of the balance: when you polish it, do you find that removing those microscopic layers to restore its shine affects the factory-calibrated tolerance and accuracy of the watch?

Kalle - Would be great if you can include checking the rate of the 'new' balance complete as since you fitted a new hairspring. I'd be very curious if the weight of the new hairspring matches the balance wheel. Thanks for demistifying the roller table installed versus not installed when performing static poising, really interesting insight!
@mlsproject
@mlsproject Месяц назад
I am curious about this also. Does Rolex have a selection of hairsprings that have already been vibrated with that particular balance wheel?

Gaaaah, hate that you showed that true poise tool. Looked fantastic, now I’ve got to find one.
@mercuriall2810
@mercuriall2810 Месяц назад
It’s a fantastic tool. I’ve noticed that when Kalle demonstrates it in a video, the next few on eBay fetch up to £200. Once those with deep pockets who saw the video and want one have got one, the going rate drops to below £100. If you’re patient, you can save a lot of money. Be sure that the seller has shown/stated that both the jewels are intact and the frame is intact - most of them were made from pot metal and are easily damaged if mistreated.

@@mercuriall2810 Thanks for the tips.
@mercuriall2810
@mercuriall2810 Месяц назад
@@GentlemensWatchServices You’re welcome. In case you don’t know already, it’s proper name is the BHT Trupoise tool, and was originally (briefly) sold as the Precista Trupoise tool. The original Precista and early production of the BHT version used much better metal for the frame of the tool. Most BHT versions are pot metal as stated before, but they’re still fine if they’ve been looked after. There’s no other tool which lets you test for truth in the flat and truth in the round, that also safely clamps the balance wheel by its arms so the bar can be used to push or pull on the wheel to make corrections. When you consider that balance wheels need to be true in the flat and round without deviation visible under at least 20x magnification, this tool really is a game changer for people who need to true balance wheels. If a balance wheel is distorted and isn’t flat and round to at least 20x magnification, you can’t hope to properly adjust the watch to positions via dynamic poising. Edit to add : the original instruction sheet for the tool is available online if you look.

Hi Kalle, really enjoying the journey on this one. Can I ask who made your round 'bullseye' spirit level please, or if you can recommend any? I've failed over many years to find one at that size that is in any way reliable to the tolerance level I would like. Many thanks!

@ChronoglideWatchmaking
@ChronoglideWatchmaking Месяц назад
If it doesn’t fit it is the wrong way around, hahahaha. The collet (inner bit), spring and stud (outer bit) aren’t symmetrical, so you see what is the right way up even before fitting the parts. Nice to hear from you.
@Yeastherder

Kalle were you able to get a Rolex balance spring and did you have to do any timing on it or adjust where it gets pinned to the stud?
