Hey everyone,
Welcome to episode 8 of Cowabunga Corner Season 5. In this episode I interview Rob Paulsen about working on the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series. Rob was the original voice of Raphael, and stayed with the cartoon from 1987 to 1995. His skills were later realized on other series such as Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, the Mask and The Tick. A wonderful voice actor who can do so much with just a microphone and a script. Rob is now Donatello on the Nickelodeon TMNT Series.
I first met Rob at Motor City Comic Con in 2005, since then I have seen him at a few other events. He is a wonderful person, whom I highly recommend meeting. If you like learning about voice acting check out his podcast "Talkin Toons" where he interviews many other voice actors and shares so much information with his fans. Truly one of the nicest guys you can meet.

Rob makes an excellent point about the animation quality of the original 'Turtles'. Even as a kid, I could easily spot the animation errors, and the mismatched voice acting. So the original was a VERY mixed bag animation wise compared to most cartoons with much better animation. Now the other 'Turtles' cartoons have much better animation, or in the case of the 4Kids series, not as many coloring errors due to digital coloring, and is better at putting the voices on the correct characters. The Nick series has GC, which is much easier at keeping things consistent due to rendering, and is well put together, but I get how most people are so attached to the original due to nostalgia, or have a preference to 2D animation, or other things, but it's still a good iteration of The Turtles. So while I still enjoy the original, I can still judge it's quality objectively as an adult.

My favorite episode with Raphael in the lead is "Raphael meets his Match" even as a child I thought it was interesting to see Raphael get a love interest. I do wish that Mona Lisa could have made a few more appearances. Just this year I finally got a Mona Lisa action figure to go with my Storage Shell Raphael from the vintage Turtles action figure line.

I close my eyes for a second and I hear Raph saying all this, it's great. Love the interview but I think there's room for another interview of Rob talking about the original TMNT series.

Yw, i love Michael Jackson! My favorite song is Thriller! I have some of the tmnt 80s on vhs, also Jackson 5 I want you back, my favorite song i know all the words to it! It is sad that they don't listen to GOOD music!

The new turtles the nick turtles if you will, are indeed kickass, i grew up with the original cartoon loved it then and still do now, but this new one, even though i'm not a #D animation fan, it works, it has kind of the same vibe. the 2003 turtles sucked. in every way it didn't know what it wanted to be... the Shredder turning out to be some kind of krang blob, that's on of the idiotic things in that version of the turtle franchise..
