I honestly consider this a happy ending for Chessmaster Hex. The Gate company wound up with egg on it’s face, Hex’s plan carried on even after he went senile, and in the end he got to play the best game of chess in his life with Radical Edward and after he won he died peacefully.
It has been mentioned few times in the show already that Earth is devastated by explosion of hyperspace gate. So Hex had a point when he claimed the gates would be dangerous and they need to keep working on them.
Well that is Watanabes original point. It was a criticism of capitalism(Teddy bomber also goes into it later on about how much of a lawless hell the future is based on pure profiteering)
I absolutely love this episode. The bounty was no longer a criminal just a senile old man, and the crime was against a major corporation that was covering up its faults. Not to mention the fact that the crew didnt ask for money, just to leave Ed's chess partner alone. The ending is so bittersweet and melancholic, you just gotta love it
7:18 "is that why that one blew up?" very likely so; the show very rarely outright states anything, but it hints at a lot of things through small connections, and it's interesting that he invented critical tech for the gates but said they were too unsafe to build yet, then the first one they build after firing him CATASTROPHICALLY fails so badly that it forces Earth to be nearly abandoned.
I think it's also clever to not ask for money. You know you''re just setting yourselves up to be targets. Threats to be eliminated. Loose ends to be tied up. Cause once a person blackmails you for a certain amount they will keep coming back for more.
"why are they floating?" .....their in space 😐 On a serious note artificial gravity probably uses a lot of power so it makes more sense to use it for the Life Support System.
Hey! You guys NEED to watch the previews for every episode (30 seconds at the end of each episode) they are one of the best parts of the show imo. Even if it’s after you’re done the show watch it !! :D
The crew is lost in time. Trapped in the past. This was also trapped in the past until he got old and forgot, so he came back to what actually made him happy, playing Chess
Those 3 guys who randomly popped in and who Anthony later said were hippies will show up from time to time throughout the show to complain about something. They've been around since Episode 1.
Yo when you guys finish the series (and movie) watch a video called "Cowboy Bebop and the West" by Steak Bently, the last video he ever did. 40 minutes, it breaks down the deep themes going on in almost every episode in the most fun, insightful way I've ever seen 👍Really enjoying sharing this with you two.
Glad you guys saw the connection to the moon gate explosion which caused the huge migration from earth via gate tech in the first place. Essentially the gate corporation was rewarded for its own corruption even though hex knew it was unethical that they forced interstate space highway system out the door too early for faster profit margins due to all the people coming and going. It's a clever criticism of corporate short term profiteering and capitalism in general that people wouldent exactly get unless they put all the pieces together but you guys did.
