Protector half rubber sole on a brand new pair of leather boots, highly recommend! Been doing this for over 35 years even with Brand New, get rubber protected half soled, longevity and long-term maintenance…

I suggest when you have a full resole you also purchase sole protectors. If it's icey or rainy where you are I suggest Raptor or Tygum for non-slip.

I’ve discovered that I agree with you (unsurprisingly): you gotta be vigilant with resoleing! I recently had to get the toes of my pointed-toe dress boots repaired, and it was a more involved repair than expected, because I’d worn into the welt at the toe without even knowing it! So I ended up needing a half-sole plus a welt repair. It can sneak up on you!

That is one fantastic half sole job. Very cleanly done and it will definitely do the same job as well as a full sole would but for less money. Fantastic video JC.

Excellent video JC. Motorcycling and wet pavement caused my Boulet's Leather soles to wear out so fast and like you new half soles were totally great ....and being naive... I never thought instead of replacing leather soles with full rubber half soles. Your repair guy really explained excellently how it can be done !

I prefer my boots to have leather soles. I ain't a fan of rubber soles.

I bought a pair of older Tony Lama's from good will and they had some issues with the sticking on the sole of one. I took I to a local cobbler he said he did new soles and heal caps but I believe it was a half sole. Still they looked like new when I picked them up a week later. I was very happy

Thanks great video a little more education...I have a pair that need resole & with resole I treat them as new boots. I Walk in the city (concrete & asphalt) for a day to scuff them up.

Very interesting and informative. I approach shoe repair from a cost standpoint. If the shoe/boot is high quality with leather soles, I half sole. On the other hand I buy ropers with rubber soles for 2 reasons-1, the rubber has better traction on smooth and wet surfaces. 2, They are cheaper and the boot leather wears out before the rubber sole does, in which case I throw them away and buy a new pair of rubber soled ropers.

Very informative. Thanks. Question. I was looking at a pair of Lucchese 1883 Carson’s and was wondering if (since they don’t have lemon wood pegs)if they can be resoled? My budget won’t let me get the classics. Again,thank-you.

Yes all you need to have a boot resoled easily from my understanding is a proper goodyear welt (there are other welt styles for other shoes but that doesn't matter here). Your Lucchese 1883 have a full welt which don't need pegs. My boots in this video have a 3/4 welt with pegs. Two different ways to make a boot but arguably same quality. Both can be repaired with a half sole. My first Boulets have a full welt and I've had 3 half soles on those

Ive had half soles done by two different coblers and both have failed. I dont waste my time with half soles anymore. Half soles also dont look as good. They always separate a little where the splice is. This little separation catches on stuff and makes it worse.

So I just got to the part with leather to leather rubber to rubber as long as you prime and glue correctly it works. As an electrician, we do the same with underground conduit which we use a lot of pvc. In my time, cleaning your conduit and not, if you only glue it WILL come undone. I’ve never seen or had to repair an underground conduit run that was primed then glued. Point is, talk to your cobbler about their process before sending them your boots an complaining. Free market capitalism. Everything is a risk. Do your research.
