In the long and storied history of the Lone Star State, few names are given as much due respect and reverence as that of Britton Johnson, better known as Britt Johnson.
Born into slavery, Johnson had built a successful ranch near the town of Weatherford,TX during the post-Civil War reconstruction era. He had also built a sterling reputation as a skilled cowhand and stalwart fighter against the Comanche and Kiowa raiding that plagued the area in the 1860’s.
After his son had been killed and the rest of his family kidnapped by the Comanche and Kiowa in 1864, Johnson- still under the legal bonds of slavery- had ventured forth alone into the North Texas prairies in search of his stolen family.
He not only returned with his family, but several captured white hostages as well.
But, his actions in rescuing his family had angered many of the Comanche and Kiowa, who vowed to exact their revenge on the lone cowboy should they ever cross paths again.
In the wake of the abolition of slavery, and the contentious Reconstruction Era, Johnson managed not only to survive, but to thrive. Building a sizable and well-kept ranch and homestead, and being known as a forthright businessman and upstanding citizen.
However, the rage of the warriors whom he had angered years earlier still runs hot. Revenge for them would come in 1871, when Britt Johnson and two of his fellow ex-slave cowhands in Dennis Cureton and Paint Crawford are on their way to Johnson’s ranch. They are caught out in the opening, in the early morning, by a group of 25 Kiowa warriors.
The fight that unfolded in the span just a few minutes time would be one of the most brutal, vicious, and heroic one-man stands in the history of not only Texas, but the entirety of the Old West. Do not miss the legendary tale of Britt Johnson’s one man stand in our newest episode “Cowboys vs. Kiowa Warriors : Britt Johnson’s Legendary Last Stand”, brought to you only by History At The OK Corral: Home Of History’s Greatest Shootouts and Showdowns!
