You are spot on with the floodiing. The more you build with roads, concrete, etc, the less area there is for rain to soak in. Also very little maintenance is done to keep drains, culverts, streams, rivers free of debris. We have the same issues over here in nz. Thanks for all the updates.
In the Netherlands there are rules if you build anything or harden a surface you have to compensate waterstorage in your direct area. With a formula and all. And everybody has to follow em. Even the municipalities.. 😅
@@GeorgeSaunders well, depends on the development. But new build housing area's all have wadi's (lowered area where the water naturally flows to and than infiltrates or slowly gets to flow away to (widened) ditches (which are already common in the Netherlands. But when we build our latest shed of 1600m2 floorspace, we had to widen a ditch by a meter on the topside over a length of 300meters. Don't know the exact formulas and requirements. But as we have a system of ditches in place here, it has to be somesort of buffer for that, to make sure they won't overflow. Butt even then there can be floodings but it's mostly in the concreted area's then. A bit hard to explain i guess 😀
Yes I agree with what you said George, but why the hell did they stop dredging our waterways, clearing ditches and gulleys at the side of roads that our late grandfathers used to cut out and kept them clear. After all we live on an island surrounded by water.
Morning totally agree, I noticed as well it's always new builds they visit. Around here (near you) we have this unfounded need to constantly build on flood plain.🙄
Well said George. Our grandparents may not have enjoyed the benefit of an FW30 or a T7 225 but they knew how to live and work the land, and particularly what a flood plain is and why you dont build on it. Good to see you still in good form and cracking on
Agree with your comments regarding new houses causing flooding, but do feel that zero / min till doesnt help either. Where I am, we had flooding early this year for the first time due to run off from the fields. Large areas ( mainly headlands ) produced nothing to harvest due to the land not being moved for several years. Noticed since harvest, these fields have been subsoiled and ploughed properly for the first time in ages. Will be interesting to see what happens if we get another wet winter. The FW will out live us all.
Very good point on the concrete all the extra roofs also collect water that would normanly soak into the ground but why do they keep building houses in flood plains
You will never be out of work when running old kit, however that's what you enjoy George, its your hobby and good luck to you, I love to hear your stories. We often look back on equipment, cars through Rose Tinted Spectacles. I though once I would like an E Type Jaguar, as good looking car you cant fault it, driving it regrettably shattered the dream, and thats all I will say.
Your right, Modern tractors are like a big annoying plastic laptop, that keeps talk back to ya, beep, beep beep. Good old school tractor doesn't talk back, u tell it wat ta do & it does it, spanner or belt of a hammer & away with it 🚜💥 👌🛠️
im east anglia, but down fen way, we've had aload of rain, but the farmers down here are big on water management in the fields, i remember them laying down massive pipes in the fields to keep the water flowing into the ditches etc, to the point where main flooding areas they spent a tonne of money on trying to sort it all etc, so it might be reason u guys got hit harder as its flowing better hear up to you boys and girls XD XP.
Great video George how could someone call that fw30 stupid how dare they that's an absolute Beast 👍👍👍👍👍 I'm still waiting to see you to put my thumbs up 👍 👍👍
The same old theme of more and more hard surfaces on the land combined with little-to-no waterway maintenance. We haven't a lot of flooded ground here in Shrops, but suffered a lot of wash-off this weekend. Keep up the good work 👌
Over here in the Republic of Ireland, we are burnt out of it. Didn't rain for over 3 weeks, grass is brown like straw. Suiting the tillage men, all cut and winter crops going in.
The concrete jungle is expanding at an alarming rate down in the South East (Kent area) George! What was a field one day is turned into a housing estate the next day! Its frightening. 😮
I’ve been keeping an eye on our river but only come up 1m or so. Funny you say it’s always modern developments on the news. Up here it always seems to be York on the news… been flooded for hundreds of years but still makes headlines 🤣🤣. Agree it’s all the concrete and tarmac that’s been laid 😔
George might have to be on the look out for an Alvis Stalwart or Hagglunds amphibious vehicle if the rain keeps going. The UK looks like it could do with something like the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) for some flood control projects. A quick look for possible flood management would suggest some 'flood bays/ storage/ sediment settling basin, south of Ely then pumped in a pipe south of Stowmarket. (30 miles). I would expect some new UK videos of vehicles being driven through deep water/ fords by numpties soon.
Serious bit of flooding. It must be a pain having to remove the plastic from those bales all winter. For the amount of bales stacked would a clamp not be better.
All depends on how good your memory is and how old you are, for me who was born in 1953 which isn’t even that old these days we we’re subject to flooding frequently especially farming in the Ancholme valley!
Its a sod to lose the last of the easy days of Autumn, with your flooding, no more grazing on that land this yr...Summer floods are always worse as the vegetation holds up water worse than later ones, plus you lose grass to summer flooding, it dies off badly, especially if you get sun on the water...It is what it is, great mindset....
Hello george! always enjoy your flooding video updates. Seem to be more and more of them!😁 auto guidance works great on artic steering tractors. speaking of that, if you have some time leftover someday i will once again ask if you could ask bedfordia about our johndeere 8650. i will happily pay for any info you can find out. tata!
Concrete and lack of maintenance of drains, rivers etc plus the ea are not fit for purpose and seem to overlap with other boards that can't, won't or are not allowed to do anything. It's all a sad waste of cash.
Hallo george have you in England to much rain in short Time here in Germany Eberswalde by Berlin we had the last 4 months sunny dry wheater to the evening we had a little rain.
Well said about the new buildings and the new Government want an explosion of new build with one hand and talking going green with other , auto steer whatever next , Need the D8 MANS TRACTOR , I have my grandads 1938 wrist watch still going giving good service how many of these modern gadget watches will be going in 76yrs
Agree with you George, been saying it for a long time, I really can't see the modern tractors still running like your FW or other old stuff . Strikes me the slightest fault on modern gear and they grind to a halt or limp mode which becomes a main stealer issue. More roads as well as 100s of 1000s of new build houses going up often in areas vulnerable to flooding so all that water gets concentrated and causes more floods, minimum till can't be helping either with a lot of run off in no time these days, notice a lot of sunsoiling and ploughing going on this season. Don't care what many say but you will never beat the plough instead of scratching the soil around.
Great video George, I have said this before and I will say it again, councils and environment agencies need to get their act together and start clearing drains and ditches. I am a lorry driver and it doesn’t matter where I am in the country I constantly see blocked drains it drives me nuts. Rant over , take care George 👍👍
In 46 years time you might not be allowed to plough or get proper fossil Diesel for the FW. But do keep looking after her and working her on nice days.😊😅😊
So true George. Got a new estate going up in our village that has been built on meadows that flood, which no doubt keeps flooding at bay from roads and houses/buildings around the area. Be interesting to see what happens when we do get loads of rain. 🤦🏻♂️
It's just not all the new houses, they build on flood plains and never expect them to flood ever again. The old boys knew a thing or two about drainage that the uni educated new boys will never learn.
Dundee City Council knocked down a school because of flooding causing subsidence. They are now building a brand new school at great expense, on the same piece of land. Ok, I know building methods etc have changed since the 1960s, . but hey-ho. When there is heavy rain the park opposite the school site floods so you can only see the top two feet or so of the goal posts and the locals get their jet skis out! I agree with what another comment made about min/no till, and lack of deep ploughing. It's not as common where I live but I saw lower lying fields earlier in the year that took months to dry not long after winter barley/wheat were sown, so many bare patches. My grandfather told me that he spent almost a whole winter clearing out old clay drains and ditches. Don't see so much of that nowadays. Apologies for waffling on, take care!
i agree with your point about flooding houses built on flood plains etc new housing going up on natural flood plains no gardens anymore all block paving drives etc look at the limes nr me flooded out loved your demo of those tractors the other day
Good but wet update video George 🤔🌨️ was really surprised to see you with so much water 💦 when up here 🏴 we've escaped it 😮👍 hope it doesn't get any worse for you 👍
Going quite well George a lot of grain had to be sprayed off but getting through it now and potato harvest in full swing as well 👍 saw a set up like triple mowers on a New Holland T7 225 taking down potato haulms 💪👍
