There's -15°C and everything is covered in thick piles of snow where I live, so it's the perfect time to read Moominland Midwinter yet again. The Finnish name Taikatalvi (literally translated Magic Winter) perfectly encapsulates how the book has made me feel every time I've read it since childhood. Winter is the time for darkness, comfort and adventure 😊

My favorite videos of the year! 🤩 This may be too niche for a full video, but I'd be so curious to hear what all your recommendations are for middle grade books adults can read. I usually find the books you recommend in the languages I'm learning, since the reading level is perfect for my level of fluency. Not too easy, not too hard. It's a difficult thing to find because so many of them really are too young for adults to read, but the gems that are out there are perfect for foreign language entertainment/study!

I have a few wintery books from Finland to recommend! Some of these you’ve read and mentioned. - Under The North Star trilogy by Väinö Linna One of the biggest Finnish classics but actually fantastic for people who don’t usually like classics. It follows one family through a time when also a lot of important events happened in Finnish history. Just read it and love it like everyone else does. - Year of The Hare by Arto Paasilinna A book you’ve mentioned and loved like I did. Had to put it on the list. - Meet The Grump by Tuomas Kyrö A Man Called Ove type of a book written before A Man Called Ove. Tuomas Kyrö had a radio show where he created the character ”Grump”. The Grump instantly became a legend and Tuomas Kyrö wrote a book of his story. I recommend this book for anyone who loved A Man Called Ove. - Moominland Midwinter and The True Deceiver by Tove Jansson I think you’ve mentioned Moominland Midwinter in one of your videos. I can easily recommend all of the Moomin books but this one is all about winter in the Moominland. Another favourite is Moominpappa at Sea. The True Deceiver is an independent novel by Tove Jansson which is also set in winter time.

I’m sure Emma will have a much better answer (and I suppose also it partly depends on what country you’re in, as there are probably different ones; I'm in the US) but this year I got the Norton Centenary Edition, translated by M.D. Herter Norton. It’s such a beautiful book, probably the most beautiful I own and perfect for a gift. And I believe Norton’s translation is very well praised.

I mean... children's books do count? Certainly as much as manga does? Reading is reading and reading is good. I am a fan and not trying to be crappy, but this is a confusing take. Unless you're reading board books for babies just to hit an arbitrary competitive reading number which ultimately doesn't matter as long as you're enjoying yourself, it counts. Just two cents. Anyway, just so it's not just criticism, I've previously read Winter in Sokcho and Heaven and Hell on your recommendation and loved them, and Ethan Frome is great but yes, miserable just like winter.
