This was our second trip ever onboard an Amtrak Sleeper Train; we went overnight from Chicago to Washington, DC; we slept in a roomette, and this was a completely different experience from our first trip from NY to Chicago.
This is the Capitol Limited, one of the most famous Amtrak Sleeper trains and routes. We spent almost 24 hours onboard this train, and after experiencing and sightseeing, we can honestly say that this was an incredible experience =)

The Lakeshore Limited and Capitol Limited are controlled by different "profit centers" within Amtrak. It turns out that ticket rates and such are regulated by the states that each Amtrak train operates in, and so the two trains are operated by different Amtrak business units with different priorities. The result is that the Capitol Limited is among the worst of the Amtrak one-night "long distance" trips, while the Lakeshore Limited is among the best. The routes west of Chicago (Empire Builder, Zephyr, Southwest Chief, and Texas Eagle/Sunset Limited) are 2-night or 3-night trips and have traditional dining. Even the Texas Eagle/Sunset Limited (the longest Amtrak trip at 3 nights) offers only "Flexible Dining" during the first leg between Chicago and San Antonio. Three days a week, the Texas Eagle is joined to the Sunset Limited (which originates in New Orleans) in San Antonio. Your accommodation is unchanged, but a regular diner (and Sightseer Lounge) is in the Sunset Limited consist. So between San Antonio and LA, you have traditional dining and access to the Sightseer Lounge. The Capitol Limited has not has a Sightseer Lounge for years, I don't know why you were told otherwise onboard.

Unfortunate to see that some of the trains still have flexible dining leftover from COVID, the traditional dining on the long distance routes from Chicago to the West Coast is much better. Hopefully you got to experience that. I’m glad you still enjoyed yourself though! Chicago and DC Union Stations have gorgeous architecture.

I'd suggest trying a similar trip in either the month of May or June when everything is green and growing. The view is much prettier when the Midwest is warm. 🌞☀

Thanks for the tip! While we love winter weather and landscape, I can only imagine how pretty it would be in spring/summer 😊

Amtrak is presently refurbishing the entire Superliner fleet. Unfortunately there is only one diner and sightseeing lounge car on a train's consist, unlike coaches and sleepers cars. Amtrak pulled from service during the pandemic when it got the funds to refurbish the Superliner fleet the diner and sightseeing lounge cars from the shared train sets of the Texas Eagle and Capitol Limited. Favoring to keep these cars in service with the west coast trains running through the more scenic Rockies. Since the sightseeing lounge car with the cafe is pulled from service, the cross country cafe car is being used presently as a diner and a cafe. This is why the lone cross country cafe car attendant is microwaving preprepared meals without a proper waiter of a diner. Amtrak''s ridership is growing since the pandemic. Like the rest of the travel and tourism industry business dropped off significantly. Amtrak furloughed its diner staff and resorted to flexible dining, microwaving preprepared food, instead of the traditional dining of short order cooks and waiters seen in a coffee shop/diner... Amtrak even reduced services from a daily service with the long distance trains as well and furloughed conductors and engineers too. Amtrak is having difficulty recruiting personnel that spend more than ten hours on a train, especially those in the diner as the crew's dormitory transitional sleepers are also being refurbished. The good news is the refurbishment program is expected to finish by the end of 2024, this year. Plus Amtrak will see 15 wrecked Superliner cars return to service releiving Amtrak's present shortfalls of Superliner cars. Keep in mind some of these Superliner cars have been around since the late 1970s, over 40 years in age, and long overdue for refurbishment. Amtrak sometime this year will place new orders for replacement of the Superliner fleet, which probably won't see service until 2030s... I do wish Amtrak employees would tell the truth, but to refurbish cars, cars have to be pulled from service and some trains have to go without...

Thanks a lot for the detailed info! We're total newbies to this world and your through response helps us to better understand it. Looking forward to the refurbished cars then! 😀

The imposition of "Flexible Dining" predated the pandemic and furloughed the diner staff long before any pandemic issues. The sightseer lounges haven't been on the Capitol for years.

You guys look like you're having fun and it has been to watch along.. I hope you have already been to Chicago and DC beause only spending a few hours is much less than these cities deserve for a visit. If your budget allows will you try out one of the family roomettes in a future trip?

I. highly recommend laying over at one station on a long distance train route, whether a small town or a large city. There is always a hotel or B&B nearby a railroad station as railroad stations are usually within walking distance of downtown. I prefer the small towns B&Bs, once you are hooked on B&Bs, you will never wish to spend a night at a corporate chain hotel again.

From my understanding if you get off the train in one of the stations your ticket becomes void at that point. Am I correct or can you get off in a town and get on the train again on a different day and complete the journey to the final destination? -Ari

Absolutely! We thoroughly enjoyed our first train rides and can't wait to do more routes 😀 Those were our first times in Chicago and DC, and we loved them... we'll visit another time for longer! We'll definitely keep the bigger rooms in mind for future videos :)

Glad you were able to grab some deep dish pizza from my fair city. I will let you know that REAL Chicago pizza is “tavern style”, which is thin crust cut into squares. Also, try out the western bound routes like the Zephyr for real food not served in containers. And much better views.

Next time we're in Chicago we would love to try it :D it sounds better! We are definitely trying the western bound routes in the future when the budget allows. I'm sure the landscape is amazing!
