Sunday, May 5, 2024, the CPKC Final Spike Tour continued as the train, led by 4-6-4 Hudson CP 2816, assisted by FP9As 1401-4107 and 15 cars operated over the SOO Line River and Tomah Subs between St Paul, MN and Portage, WI. It was a tough chase, fans were out in droves, and a few "pacers" kept traffic backed up. After shooting the train at Covill (east of Red Wing, MN), I wasn't able to get my next shot until Wabasha, MN. Thanks to a 30" service stop in Midland Siding, we were able to get the first clip on this video. By this time, the highway changed from a two lane to a four lane road, making it easy to get around the pacers! In this video you'll see the three spots where I chose to shoot video rather than my 35 mm, mainly due to the sun angle.
I hope you enjoy!

Sounds good. Squared for sure. Whistle sounds a little froggy. Im used to US steamboat type whistle, so is that normal for Canadian whistles?

Gee I’m not sure. I do know that engine has two whistles. One right ahead of the cab that is a steam whistle, the other on the front of the locomotive just bend the stack. The forward one sound more electric but when it’s blown steam is coming out of it?

Great Video - How did you find out the schedule? We wanted to catch it at Portage to Columbus today but can not find a schedule of departure.

Thank you so much! I had some inside information being a retired CP/D&H train dispatcher. Most departures are either 7 or 9 am, I got skunked at Glenwood when it was supposed to depart at 9 am but they left two hours early!

For some reason the algorithm thought this would be of interest to me? Not so much. I get the nostalgia of a steam train. It's not my thing. Yet I understand the enthusiasm. All that stated. I watched twice to make sure I observed what was presented. Are those not two diesel electric engines behind the steam engine? The train didn't seem all that long. 3 engines? Are the diesel electric engines going for a ride?

Steam isn’t for everyone. It’s certainly much more interesting than today’s power. As for the two FP9s, they are protect engines in case something happens to the steamer. They are actually MU’d and controlled from the steam engine. They are used as assist engines on the hills.
