I have recopied Red Moser's films with a film digitizer. The results are greatly improved over the previous mirror box transfers. Herewith is a sampler from his two trips on the Canadian in June and December 1970, with a few later shots of the Spiral Tunnels added. Merry Christmas!

That’s my father, Ed Currie, the engineer at the start of the film, then about 8:26 then again at 1146.;He had the run from Calgary to Field, BC before he retired. He would stay overnight in Field the bring the Canadian back the next day.. This is wonderful to see. I never knew this film existed.

@@haweater1555 not a fuel tender. It's a Locotrol remote control car for operating mid train helpers. In the early days the equipment was so bulky it required a separate unit to carry it. BC Rail, Southern Railway and others had similar units.

Great old film of one of North America's greatest passenger trains. I like the CP orange. It's very direct - sharp looking, with no frills. The FP9 was the zenith of the F units, but American railroads purchased few of them, given the rapid decline of passenger service in the U.S. Chicago and Northwestern had a few, I think. It made 1,750hp (250 more hp than the FP7, or F7s) and had steam generators and heating equipment.

Ad a Montrealer, I photographed in some of the locations shown in the video. I also traveled during the 50s, 60s and 70s, on The Dominion and The Canadian, Many of the scenes of the video also brought back of what it was like in the days; especially Calgary and the Spirals which I visite countless times over 30 years, I now live in Calgary,

Wow...brings back memories of when i was a kid growing up in Red Rock, seeing that train go by my Dad's shop once/week. I got to ride that train 3x from Winnipeg to Red Rock. Thanks for the video

Great memories. Thank you for uploading. My first trip on the Canadian was June 1977, from Winnipeg to North Bay, Ontario, via Thunder Bay, North Shore of Lake Superior. Amazing scenery. I was seated in the first row of the Skyline dome car, when this car had a short coach section and snack bar at the back. I still take the Via Canadian once in a while and still LOVE this train. I wish the new Via Canadian could still run on the North Shore of Superior (one of the most beautiful parts of the country), but understand that Via has to serve more remote communities on the northern CN line.

I'm not Canadian,I'm American,and my all time favorite railroad and paint scheme is the red n silver Santa Fe. My fav passenger train is the Super Chief which ran from Chicago,where we lived once to LA. But very close behind is CPRail. Hated the old maroon and gray paint scheme but the red and white Pacman locomotives and freight cars were/are boss, man. That Canadian passenger train was gorgeous,wish we could have taken that run to Lake Louise. CPRail just screams Christmas to me. Unfortunately,every president or CEO running American railroads has made the statement that a railroad cannot make money on passenger service. That,plus the fact that via air,you are in BC the same day versus I don't know,how many days via rail? That's at least a solid day maybe two to spend running away from the grizzly bears !!!!! 😊

After 14 years as a CP telegrapher in the 50's on CP Rail's Schreiber Division [up and over Lake Superior] I decided to leave since we were being phased out by CTC and station closures. I took my all points rail pass with me and before it was cancelled I took a trip on the Canadian from Toronto to Vancouver and back to Toronto after a few days spent in Vancouver. Wow! Awesome job brings me back memories of watching the CPR trains at our cottage at Ingolf a small train town on the Ontario-Manitoba border. The cp Keewatin sub runs up a grade here and I loved and still enjoy watching the grain trains and heavy coal trains lugging up the "hill". Back in the 70s I was just a little boy but I remember the F7/9s and the Canadian came through every day both eastbound and westbound. Freight trains had a wide variety of motive power from alco's, early Geep 7s and 9s and lots of SD40s, and SD40-2s. Now it is very quiet and very few trains run through Ingolf. Those that do are mostly hot intermodel trains with as many as 600 sea cans and truck boxes with GE es44ac 's and Ac4400 's in DPU. I still see 224 car grain drags with 4 4400 HP locomotives in DPU lugging up the grade and love every second of it.

Thanks for sharing this! Its amazing how much this route has changed. Some places are nearly unrecognizable today. I remember heading to the river's edge to watch the last few years of the Canadian before VIA, winding its' way along the bow river in the eastern Rockies when I was only 11 years old. Seeing old 5931 downtown a few years before it was moved to Heritage Park...The Calgary tower before it was surrounded by taller neighbors. The Winnipeg station's yards and surroundings are only a memory now, most of the old buildings came down in the 80's. The docks at Thunder Bay are mostly derelict and deserted now...

Yes, I added the soundtrack. I am pretty fussy about diesel sounds, nothing gripes me like a Baldwin or GE with an EMD sound added. @fmnut
@fmnut 2 года назад
It's not so much the "lawsuit happy society" to blame, but rather a safety issue. Extra personnel in the cab are a distraction to the crew. There was a serious incident a number of years back where an unauthorized fan in the cab was killed in a derailment. The presence of that fan was attributed as contributing to the cause. This led to regulations prohibiting the practice. It's not worth it to a crew to risk their jobs over giving a fan a ride. Even authorized rail employees are only permitted in the cab in the course of their duties.
@supercuda1950
@supercuda1950 2 года назад
@@fmnut Again, it goes to liability (lawsuits). An extra person should not be a distraction. Sounds likr they three the passenger undet the bus. Tjat's like saying a passenger in a truck cab is a distraction. With people running gates, wildlife, track defects, etc an extra in the cab sounds like the least of an engineer's worries. Again it sounds like the pass was the scapegoat. Do you think the rr or engineer would take credit for the derailment?

I remember a model train show at Windsor that was a childhood dream. The steam escaping the coaches during winter were always a welcome sign you would be toasty warm inside! Great editing of a decade not often portrayed. Congratulations on all that work. Some footage of The Canadian and some freight trains appears to be from 1977 or 1978. Correct? The reason is that both the F units and late model SD40-2's are sporting 8" reflective stripes which started to appear in 1976-1977, and since no VIA painted equipment is shown, it can't be later than that. Some footage might even be later, there being small multimarks on all 4 SD40-2 in the consist near 23:30.

The engine was bought by the Montreal Urban Community Transit Commission in 1982, when the latter assumed management authority of the Montreal-Rigaud commuter line. The engine was repainted and renumbered as 1300 circa 1985 and repainted once more before retirement in the early 1990s.

Were those pullman or acf bilevels in the beginning? What city was using them?
@synthfreakify
@synthfreakify 4 года назад
I believe those were built under license by Canadian Vickers and used in Montreal. Same as American design.

The city was Montreal QC, on CPR lakeshore cummuter line, as for bi-level coaches I should know but have forgotten, I can get back with the information later. CPR purchased them in the late sixties or early seventies.

Just noticed "synthfreakify" indicated Canadian Vickers, that appears to correct, my aplogies for doubling up and not noticing it. Build date for those coaches appears to be 1969

@@barrylydford9518 thanks guys, We are still using pullman bilevels in Chicago (Metra) that were built in the 50's... I knew that the SP had them in the SF Bay area but wasn't aware of anyone else other than the CNW and Rock island had them!

Questioning the date of June 1970...the Canadian government grain cars seen in the Vancouver skyscraper view did not start to arrive until 1973.

The observation tower in Vancouver was built for Expo 86. I added these scenes to illustrate the area around the CP station as well as the later spiral tunnel footage. The rest is from 1970 as stated.

What are the lights on the Canadian loco pointing upwards?
@fmnut
@fmnut Год назад
They were Pyle National Gyralites, more frequently found mounted in the nose of the locomotive. The concept was to have an oscillating light pointing upward at a 45 degree angle to light up the landscape and make the train more visible to opposing traffic where there was extreme curvature and intervening rock formations in canyons. Also, under conditions of reduced visibility rain/snow/fog, the light beams themselves would be visible in the air over the locomotive. In practice, they were deemed to be only marginally effective and were removed in the 1970s as maintenance became an issue.

@@fmnut One other question . If you have seen Silver Streak , what is the location when George falls off the train by the signal gantry and the train rounds the bend off to the right?
@fmnut
@fmnut 4 года назад
@@ronniemcewan3150 The mountain portions of the movie were filmed on the Crowsnest Pass route, so the exact location is probably somewhere between Crowsnest and Fort Steele

The movie Silver Streak! Named after the famed CB&Q train. Filmed on the CP. Unstoppable movie filmed with CP engines. CP likes to use their equipment to make other railroads look bad. They made Amtrak look bad in Silver Streak. They made CN and BNSF look bad in Unstoppable. LOL
@Greatdome99
@Greatdome99 4 года назад
I'm pretty sure the movie makers didn't name the film after the CB&Q train (Kansas City-Lincoln/Omaha, "Silver Streak ZEPHYR"), since it was a very minor train discontinued in the 1950s, long before Silver Streak was filmed along its Crows Nest Pass mainline twenty years later. Most of "Unstoppable" was filmed around Pittsburgh, PA
@kingdoughnut7244
@kingdoughnut7244 4 года назад
@@Greatdome99 Thanks for the info about the CB&Q. Yes, I know Unstoppable was filmed on the WE, around OH, WV and PA. But both movies used CP equipment. Silver Streak was filmed on the CP trackage as well. That was the point I was making. ( I'm sure you already know that.)

@Black Caesar It has nothing to do with the color of someone's skin but the erasing of our culture. Name another country whose people would willingly allow that. What made Canada great was its western culture as it disappears the foreigners will want to go back because there will be no difference. Canadians have been brain washed to not show pride in their culture and let others blame them for there own failings. Too bad we used to be tough sobs lol.
