Being approved for the disability tax credit (Revenue Canada) won't directly help your application for CPP disability (ESDC Canada). These programs are run by different government departments and the criteria for approval are different. However, often the level of disability needed for the disability tax credit will also be enough to qualify a person for CPP disability. It is helpful to include the medical report your doctor filled out for the DTC with the documents you use to support your CPP Disability claim.

This sounds very unusual. Normally what happens with group disability plans (US or Canada) is that they can offset any payment receive from a social security program (eg. CPP disability). So, in your example your LTD insurer could offset the $1350 from CPP disability, and therefore only owe you $100 per month. You may also owe the entire CPP retroactive payment over to the insurance company as well, so if you didn't pay that over to them, it is possible they just cancelled your benefits for that reason as well. I would like to know this as well. I am on LTD from military and will be 60 this year. I am told I have to apply to CPP this year because the insurer requires it. Why can't I wait for 65?

@@gordtulloch9623 I suggest you get written confirmation from CPP to confirm whether taking CPP at age 60 (disability) will reduce your CPP at age 65 (retirement).

@@gordtulloch9623 I also suggest that you be very careful when completing page 18 of the CPP disability application form which states that submitting the CPP disability application is VOLUNTARY. No it's not voluntary when the LTD policy says it mandatory. When I completed my CPP application form, I crossed out "voluntary" and replaced it with "required."

No, the decision to approve or deny LTD benefits is not tied to a CPP disability decision. The only exception here is that they require you to keep appealing the CPP claim until you get a final decision at the Tribunal. If you drop the CPPD appeals before then, some insures will estimate and deduct CPP disability payments that you aren't getting.

@@thecppdisabilitychannel2048 Is that a LEGAL or an ILLEGAL action by the insurance company? The LTD policy may state that an insurer can deduct other income, but when there is no "other income" can they legally reduce LTD benefits at all? Isn't the insurer obligated to continue to pay? When you take on a case, how often do you win PUNITIVE DAMAGES for the claimant when the insurer stops paying? Where is the law (the actual Canadian Law) that states the insurance company is legally allowed to "require" an LTD claimant to apply for CPP disability anyways? I'm not referring to Case Law for one precedent relating to one trial, I'm looking for the actual Law that states what insurance companies are allowed to include in their policies.
