As a CPU collector, seeing those piles of CPUs makes me weep at the prices I pay and how harder it is to hunt down various models (and I don't even care about bent pins, I just want the CPU!) But it is a very niche hobby, and if the collector only wants pristine CPUs, I get it, maybe it's better to reclaim the gold. It still breaks my heart though.

As for your question. Like you, I'm torn on what to do with my CPU's. I have a personal collection. I guess my kids will sell that off when I'm gone. Then I have the stack - somewhat smaller than yours - that I'm either going to use for my own gold refining or sell off. Lastly, I have the stack that I sell on a regular basis to folks like Boardsort (in the US).

@@streetcopper1151 knowing what might hurt you or end your life is pretty important in this business. It's just simple scrapping, it's not much to be knowledgeable about because you can see what's important and should at least know what may be important or to go after. Everyone would be much better in this line of work if guy actually knew hardware and studied computers, servers and what's actually worth real money beyond precious metals. Some cpus are worth far more than you can ever imagine. Grey trace 4004 $2,000, if it's engineering sample $10,000, a good majority of sample cpus can go for $25 to $500 a lot of intel chips are worth hundreds. These guys are just scrappers and nothing more especially ben, he knows nothing else outside of scrapping. I've been doing this a long time and you need to know all 4 sides of the business. Scrapping which is easy anyone can do it, recovering and refining, computer hardware and networking contacts

I know they are not extremely rare, but they are super hard to find scrapping out computers these days. I think most scrappers like them, I know I do. You need to get your self a nice ball mill, and a shaker table. Crush them all to dust and use the shaker table to separate the materiel, I have seen some people do that. Real heavy metals go out at the bottom. them lighter materials further up the table. and really light stuff goes to the top. pretty good to get as much clean gold as possible and them process.

I'm Going to process some boards and fingers I got from a vintage lot of old Gateway PC's and old IBM's a lot of gold parts and chips so I hope to get a decent yield it was 40-50 PC's from the 80's so I hope the gold is good.

You should consider the RETRO group of people who are looking for those older style boards and CPU's, yes you can get a lot of scrap, but only if the board is utterly dead. Retro gaming is coming in force and should be a good thing for you people who have older stock of boards / cpu's and so forth :P

I would keep them all as a collectible, maybe except the ones with heavily bent pins and even worse damage. There is so little gold in there that it will never compensate the market value of the CPUs once they reach a critical age and/or availability. Maybe a standard Pentium 1 or 486 is worth less now than gold value but wait a few years and that will change. I am a collector of old hard disks myself and while most of them were aquired for way less than 10 bucks (incl. shipping) it gets more and more difficult to find one for this price range. Some models are worth tens of bucks (Euros in my case) now and were dirt cheap a few years ago when I got them. Same will be for CPUs, I'm quite sure ... Don't just aim for the hardcore collectors that are willing to spent top dollar. A 486 for 10 bucks sold yields you way more money than the gold in it and it is always better to preserve than to destroy. Recycling should always be the last option.

I'm done watching now! You want the opinions of your friends and or viewers! I think you're spot on, as far as setting aside the ones you mentioned for a collection. The ones not worth collecting as you said put in for gold recovery!! For your channel, I think 1 out of 20 or 30 videos you could do the simple and safe gold recovery! I'd LOVE it as I mentioned in 2 or 3 previous comments on this one video! Doesn't really matter what the price of gold is! Because like the bars of gold you buy, you could get the same thing for pennies on the dollar! You could get an ounce of gold for $25.00 to $75.00 or so in chemicals! I know you would be GREAT AT GOLD RECOVERY!! It would take some practice and studying, but the end result would be well worth it!! GO FOR IT BEN!!! Have a GREAT Day My Friend!!!!!

When it comes to determining if something should be viewed as collectible, the key is to imagine oneself asking that question ten or twenty years from now. I personally believe that as more people in places such as India become capable of acquiring collectibles and using social media to share their hobby, items of all sorts will become more valuable, especially small items that can be mailed with relatively low cost.
