CQB Drills with Iron Sights | Tactical Rifleman

This week on Tactical Rifleman I wanted to cover how to shoot close distances (CQB) with Iron Sights. Now, everyone says that you have to use a “red dot” for CQB, but what did we do BEFORE we had red dots? We did all these same drills with iron sights. However, the actual techniques that we used were slightly different. For example, many guys looked OVER their rear sights, and just used the front post. This also eliminates having to “hold high” to compensate for optic “Height over Bore” while taking precise shots within the room. Flip side is you are now hitting too high outside at 100 meters, and have to get in the habit of going back to your rear peep sight.
The big thing I want you to take away, is why I run backup Iron sights (BUIS). When running an optic, if your reticle dies (battery or broke glass), just look through the large optic window (your head is already there) and flip up that front sight. You will be driving tacks within 25 meters. Easy, but only easy if you practice it. Remember, combat shooting is all about developing muscle memory in training BEFORE the fight happens for real.

In the Marines I used irons to qualify in bootcamp, we had to shoot at targets 500 yards away. They're way more capable than people give them credit for. A lot of people nowadays getting into guns go straight for the red dots, and though there's nothing wrong with that, you're really doing yourself a disservice by not becoming proficient with irons. No matter how good an electronic is, it's still an electronic. And that means it relies on more parts (more potential failure points), batteries (bad ones, old ones, supply), glass (fogging, breaking, covered in mud/dirt), etc. As opposed to two pieces of metal.

My Pap Pap taught me on an old lever action 30/30. The rear sights were smashed off from something, so he told me ,as long as you cheek the gun exactly the same that front sights are good enough out to 50 or so. I believe your principle is what I also learned in archery as a kid. Using an anchor point and same or single pin was better for reflex shots. Great vid. 4.0

A tactic my dad taught me that he learned when he qualified full auto (yes his team did that), was to put the large and small Aperture the middle(in between the two), where there is no hole and look over the top at the front sight (the middle notch) and I swear it’s as fast as any red dot

Since it was absolute cowitness, I just used it as a ghost ring for the rest of that stage. Great! Right on cue Karl, right on cue. Since my rifle blew off I bought a new one and configurated it with a new handguard, so I took the opportunity to use my iron sights again before setting the thing up with red dot and optic.Back to the basics! Let's admitt it, once you set up and zero your red dot you never use iron sights anymore. Big mistake! At close range I'm a bit slower but still precise, but again, if you are crap with iron sights chances are you're gonna be crap with a red dot too. I just use the big aperture...yes, I'm older than you Karl. I think I'm gonna run the thing with I.S. for a couple of months more. Great stuff. Thanks.

This is the problem I'm running into while transitioning to a carbine with a red dot from several years of muscle memory using and training on a M16A2. I have a Colt SP1 clone , and an AR-15, carbine length, fixed FSP, cowitnessed As I'm learning to use the red dot, I'm finding myself still trying to "look past" the red dot if you will and focusing on the FSP. Muscle memory is hard to get past, even the grip feels weird compared to a full length rifle. The carbine feels like a kids gun. The truth is though, in spite of all that. I'm getting faster with the red dot, even though I still don't trust it 100%, though it has never failed. This was a great video, even learned some new things about CQB with iron sights that I never knew before now.

I thought I was just old and corny, but I built a 10'5" pistol with the A-2 front sight tower/gas block and a carry handle (no optics). I even went so far as to add triangular hand guards. I love ringing steel with it "old school" style. When I shoot my AR's that have optics, even though I (mostly) have flip-up BUIS, I usually leave my front sight up for an indexing point. Truth be known, I probably should use a fixed front sight for durability. But hey, I'm not in that AO anymore. Thanks for the video. "Thumbs up" from this Kentucky boy.

Good video. I learned a couple things. I never thought about looking over my rear sight aperture like that. Even less so that it would take care of that height over bore aiming. That slows me down the most in CQB. I'm going to start making more of an effort to keep both eyes open for CQB practice. To my own credit, I did use up a mag yesterday with iron-only CQB drills. One in the chest, two in the head (I know that's backward from what it should be. I didn't even realize it until I walk up to my target to check out my work).CQB is all I really practice right now but I'm planning on starting some long range later this spring after I pick up a .224 Valk set-up.

Just my two cents, I run 45° offset flip up sights so that if my aimpoint dies and the objective lens is obstructed, I have a clear view of my BUIS in any scenario. I also find them helpful when shooting prone from cover/concealment (such as under a car) when the mag keeps me from getting as low as I'd like while maintaining a proper sight alignment.

I always wondered about that upper. It looks like a C7 pattern upper. A1 sights but with a brass deflector. I never knew if the C7 had the A2 style aperture until this video. I used this type of upper on my AR build since I'm a lefty and wanted the A1 sights but with a deflector. Only thing was I put original Colt A1 aperture and sight parts in it. Meaning both of the apertures on the flip sight are peep holes. No large aperture. One is still marked L for long range. I've heard its got a few MOA factored in and others say there is no difference. Either way with my setup I only have the small peep sight. Personally I think I'd have trouble lining up the sights in that large aperture.

Some guys I know refuse to use red dots on the off chance that it fails, but for me, that's why you have iron sights as back up.

When something is new, it takes a while to improve its reliability. Someday, everyone in the military will be running red dots on their pistols

@@TacticalRifleman Sure but red dots aren't that new anymore. Maybe back in the 90s, it makes sense to not 100% trust them

Agreed. I would always run an Optic on a Rifle now.

I old school I run flip ups on my AR. Lol but I do have a scope on my 300 black out. So I guess I'm not all that old school. Great video and topic.

Flip ups aren't really that old school yet, lol. FWIW I still prefer fixed irons (A2 FSB & A3 rear) and a light for up close defensive use. I know red dots are all the rage and I see their advantages, along with their limitations.

I don't feel "young" today... been out practicing some movement drills with a AK-74 (for upcoming video shoot), and my knees are killing me. TR

@@TacticalRifleman Yeah, it sucks getting old. First the knees, then the back, and then the eyes, and then I don't know what happens after that. Take care and keep up the great work, Karl!
