Recieved a fresh batch of Vampire Crabs and decided to build them a more permanent tank in the store. This Vampire Crab build was super fun to do and I was really happy with the way it turned out #vampirecrab #aquarium #paladarium
A recommendation for vampire crabs is to have as much 'climb-able' surfaces as possible. They absolutely love to climb whatever they can, even vertical set ups work well with them
Just a heads up, generelly you shouldn't house red hagen (Geosesarma hagen) and the purple ones (Geosesarma dennerle) together (Different claw coloration). Although they're the same specie, the subspecie is different and they can fight eachother. Nice build otherwise tho & interesting idea growing the anubias terrestial.
Yes thanks,...They were shipped to me like that, but after some research I did learn that they should be separate, and do have them seperated now. That being said I really saw no aggression whatsoever even with the babies that were born in the tank they all seem to get along well, but to be safe I do keep them seperate now.
@@PetsNPonds dude love the tank, I was looking at terrariums and stumbled upon this now I'm thinking about making a crab tank and expanding my original idea...
I don't really clean the planted part but do water changes on the water side every couple weeks. All materials are mentioned in the video and I got them from inventory in my store. Most good pet stores would have these items. Thanks for watching
Thank you for share this tutorial. 😊 I'd like to try to make a biotope in future.. I'd like to have inside: neocaridina; vampire crab, planobella Durji durji and (maybe?) Tylomenia orange?; and a betta splendens male and isopods on land. But I need to learn more.. I don't want to risk to overpopulate the biotope/paludarium. I'm quite confuse about the sizes I need amd how many plants/animals.
I have a question. What do I do when they inevitably breed? I was considering shrimps, then I came to tiny crabs. But I had the same issue both times. What do I do about the baby crabs? Sell them?
I guess you would have to sell them, or start more tanks,.....I would go with more tanks,...LOL... Mine actually have babies now, I will be doing a video on them soon
They usually eat the babies, at least a few of them. Either sell them or get a predator in there that won't attack the big crabs but will eat the baby crabs (depending on the size of the tank)
@@PetsNPonds Thanks. We went away for a few days and the frog moss had some mold. Dealing with that before picking up the crabs. I think the water level was too high. Frog moss is a bit yellow too. Brought the water down to an inch to keep it from touching the dirt.
I see you said down below in response to Mama Dishwasher, that the rest takes care of itself. So no isopods are need to clean the mosses beds and plants? Also how do you keep the humidity do you have a lid so they cant crawl out. Thanks
The moss seems to be good on its own, I do water changes and filter maintenance frequently. It has a screen top on it but I covered about 3/4 of the screen with plastic to keep the humidity in the tank
Hi, great build, given me some great ideas for my fluval flex 57l paladarium conversion @pnpaquatics, what kg/litres are the bags for the hydroballs? cheers
Hey did you keep the same light as in the video? I have a ten gallon tank I wanna do this to can I just ues the lid it came with with the lights on it or should it be open top?
"Just gunna go ahead and grab the tank from my dart frog tank to give these guys a nice little home" [cut to the dartfrogs sitting in a sad little box bcus their home was stolen for crabs]
People have said they don't get along and mine are separated now, but I did not witness and issues when mine were together short term, cant say for sure long term. Yes they do seem to be able to interbreed. Males a have bigger claws for sure
Hello! I wonder if you could give me some input. Ive built my First attempt for a Paludarium literally following your video one to one. Some of the products aren't the same because of difference in location, but id say it is quite close besides the fact i dont have so many plants. Sadly within a week all of my crabs died and due to lack of experience I am baffled and really insecure about trying again at the costs of their lifes. What could be the immediate case? the temperature on the Paludarium is 23C, every piece Ive put there was left on water and washed before throughout, including the plants... I feel like the moss dried up quickly and needs to be sprayed many times a day. Any hint on how keeping up the humidity in the tank? and any idea of what would be a possibility for 100% mortality rate? 😕 Thank you in advance for any insight🙏
If you have a gaze top, just cover it with some sort of plastic sheet to keep the humidity high. A waterfall/water pump as well as a rain system will help you to keep it humid all the time. Good luck
Yes like LB said I have some plastic over top of the screen top covering about 75% to help keep it humid. I don't undestand why your Crabs didnt make it, I find them very hardy. Did the soil you used have any fertilizers or pesticides in it?
@@PetsNPonds I dont think the soil had any fertilizers because I bought coconut fiber and clay balls (to replace the hydro balls) for Terrariums, I used also aquarium grave and the same frog moss used on the video. I wonder about the mesh, though? Because since we couldnt find any product similar here we got a mesh that is intended for grass. Unfortunately I am traveling right now and cannot check the package but once home, I will go through the specifics and see if theres any villain listed on the product. I have suspicion over the quality of the water Ive placed on he Paludarium as I am only starting understanding how it works. So it may have been played a part because after we tested the water we could see that the PH and hardness where very high. We proceeded to make a water change after that and we have also added to the water some crustacean specific product which claims to get rid of chlorine. One thing I did diferent from the video which was add white dwarf isopods. I have picked the Isopods out with some of their substrate and added to the soon to be Paludarium in, on the next morning the crabs started dying 🤔 but I am really speculating here. Anyway, we went to a local shop that specialises in crabs and shrimps. The man there was very helpful and told us that the crabs likely died because we ordered them online from "a bad shop", where they are taken from the wild... Dropped on a small tank together with hundreds of other crabs, than shipped over with heating pads, etc. But for all five crabs we've bought to die? Thats a lot. I'd really like to make sure nothing is wrong with my setting before risking more animals, but I dont really know what to watch out for to beggin with.
hey I just have a question about keeping different color of crabs together since I read online says it’s the best to keep different color crabs separated but I feel like it would just look so much better. Was it okay for you to keep more than one color in the same tank and did u experience any aggression?
I have had them together before, for the short term. I believe it is fine as long as there is lots of room, others may argue that but that is my experience. I would not keep them together long term as the can potentially crossbreed and mess up the lines
Is is possible to make the water area a lot deeper? Like make the land area higher and with a steeper slope or even a ramp that extends along the back? I’d like to put some fish in with the crabs even if they happen to eat a few
Im lookin to do a tank like this but i want to do the water point about 7inches deep as i want to put a few shrimp in the water do you think this will be ok for the crabs?
Anyone know some trustable sites where you can buy some bicolour vampire crabs? Ive heard its best to get 2 females and 1 male. If I just got 2 females would that cause any issues?
I don't know of any way to test for fungus in plants, but its unlikely that a plant fungus would affect the health of your crabs. I have used lots of 'wild' mosses and never had any issues. Good luck with your setup
Hey. Just wondering. How many Liters / gallons is this tank? I have a 70 Liters (20gallon) tank. I want to have some fish and a few vampire crabs in there. Is that enough rom?
Hey I hope you can reply I just did kinda the same build and it looks like your water level goes into your soil level and when I did mine the soil also got water logged at the bottom did you notice yours did the same?
I try to keep the water below the soil line so it can drain properly, I have overfilled it on occasion and the soil does get too mucky for sure, best to keep it lower
@@PetsNPonds yeah I wasn’t sure if I was going to restart or maybe just drain what’s in there and put a separate tub of water in the tank. I have vampire crabs that I put in there as well. It looks so nice I’d hate to redo the whole thing I even put my isopods and springtails in lol. If I don’t fill it enough tho the filter can’t suck up any water so I don’t know
Not much you can do, I have had that happen and seperated it out, it could still eat with out its claws, it will eventually shed and grow them back if it survives long enough
WHERE do you buy vampire crabs?! I don't know if you (probably) have a connection or something but I'm not about to pay $100 on crabs... I don't see any available near me either. I just wanted 2 or 3 but the websites I'm seeing make you MUST purchase 3 of either gender so I can't really have 1 male, 2 females. So I was considering 3 and 3 but that came out to $100. Is this a normal range? If not, what should I expect to pay per crab? I'm also trying to make a self-sustaining ecosystem with shrimp mainly but I also love colorful crabs. They're so adorable to me and I'd love for them to stay small and be able to keep the shrimp population in check.
I do sell them at the store when they are available, but we cannot ship them, we are in Strathroy, ON, Canada... our retail is usually around $17. Good Luck in your search
I dream of an aquarium which has 1.crabs 2. Seahorses 3. Exotic fish like 2 or 3 discus clown fish etc 4. Rays 2 of them Total 14 organisms. Lets say 20 if i like more species of the exotic field..cause there are many choices... Can all these live together or not?? How much big the tank has to be?? Also i like jellyfish...
Hi I’m totally newbie to aquatic, I build my small Paludarium for my Vampire Crab but one huge problem I met my crab died next day I wonder it’s my water problem but I do have put dechlorine to the water before put in the tank…Please help me 🥲
@@petedanderson5581 That might work, you just need to ensure they have access to a land portion to get out of the water, they spend at least 80% of their time on land
I used the ZooMed frog moss, that you can get at most pet stores for this build. I have also been using local moss from my property for more recent builds, just make sure it has no bugs in it
It's 🥶 winter now. Ur recommendation on a 3 gal for bedroom. 10)25/21. Would appreciate help buying stuff. North California 🦀🦀🦀 Have Fiddler's & looking for vampire 🦀if possible. Ty👍 great video TOO ☺️.
3 gallon is a bit small for a colony of Crabs but you could keep a couple in it for sure. The video shows everything you need to set it up, Thanks for watching
Been running several years now and its been great. The crab waste is virtually non existent and used by the plants on land. Anything in the water is taken care of by the filter, those crabs do not seen to create very much waste at all. Thanks for watching
@@PetsNPonds thanks for the reply, it's a great video! Super interested in getting some of these guys, I had red claw rabs once and they mad eloads of waste 🤔 in terms of maintenance how does it compare to a normal fish tank? Hard to find this info online so far! Thanks again!
@@cjr96 Red Claws are very messy, I have had those as well in a similar set up and they basically destroyed it within a few months. Vampires are much easier to keep and do a lot less damage, in terms of maintenance I feel its easier than a fish aquarium, partial water change once a month or so, regular filter maintenance and wipe off a little algae and thats about it
