Does this fix the problem at the root cause ? It seems cosmetic only

Per the other comments, the joints should be wet before applying the mortar if you want maximum adhesion. while no crack repair will remedy underlying structural cause, It's likely as not to outlast the current owner. It's a patch to a crack that likely took 20-30 years to develop. Using a higher clime content will help a bit with flexibility as well as a degree of self healing. on patches like this, I have had excellent results adding fiberglass refinement hairs to the dry mix before water. Will it crack again? Likely so, but likely not soon.

Piping bag really makes the work less tedious for the vertical cracks I found.

I have since heard of that way of doing it, and yes that would have been a much easier way I think. Thanks for watching!

Thank you so much I have a wall on the side, several actually , and they are all doing the same thing...excellent work...have you considered using a piping bag ( you can substitute a baggie for it too ) like the ones used for cake decorating ? to pipe the concrete into the block...I think thats the way I will try it but thank you for teaching me that I do not have to take out the whole brick in order to fix it!

Cosmetic repair? What was done to stabilize the crack?

It seems likes it'd be easier to scrape those joints smooth if it was a little firm and dry (a couple hours later) vs still soft and wet like you did it. Also I was wondering why you didn't keep going with the margin trowel. It looked like the seam or two you did with it went faster but that's when you went ff and you went back to the little guy so I guess it was just deceiving. Thanks for the video, it helped me get an example for what I'm about to do.
@amidwestfamily112
@amidwestfamily112 2 года назад
Your probably correct I should have waited a little bit longer for it to firm up a little before I used the jointer to smooth out the joints. And I was just using whatever tool seemed to work the best for getting the mortar back in the joints. Thanks for watching!

Did you do the same on the inside in the basement/crawl space?
@amidwestfamily112
@amidwestfamily112 2 года назад
I used a chisel and hammer when I could to help cut down on the dust inside the house. But also used the grinder with a power "shop vac" large vacuum with the hose next to the grinder wheel to suck up as much of the dust as I could. That helps alot on dust control.

Damn it's allot of work but also loox like the right way. Was that quick creat?
@amidwestfamily112
@amidwestfamily112 2 года назад
It's a portland mortar mix you can get from a hardware store it's next to the sac creat BUT it is different so be sure to use the right stuff! 👍

You should have sprayed area to be tucked with water, very important! The dry block will absorb the water out of the mortar which will definitely make it weaker
@amidwestfamily112

I didn't think of that, thank you for the tip I will be sure to do that next time. Thanks for watching!

Bro I got same issue on my cinder block foundation. It looks just like what you’re fixing right now. But my whole house is made outta cinder block. I chipped out all the dust and cut it with a chisel. Should I wash blocks and then apply mortar mix. And will that fix settlement issues
@amidwestfamily112
@amidwestfamily112 2 года назад
You will want the area you plan on using mortar, to be as clean and dust free as you can get it. As far as fixing your settling issue, I can't say that will fix it. I am just a diy guy fixing my own house, and without seeing what's going on with your house I can't say that will fix it. Good luck!

If your just repointing then joints you don’t need to wash it, it’ll make a mess. If your replacing full on cinder blocks or replacing bricks, wet down the area so you get really strong mortar adhesion- I’m a mason

So this is just a cosmetic repair not a actual foundation repair?
@amidwestfamily112
@amidwestfamily112 Год назад
It's a actual repair. It would be best if you have access to both sides of the wall, so you can cut out and repack both sides.
@Luckingsworth
@Luckingsworth Год назад
Cosmetic in that it doesnt adress WHY it cracked, structural in that the blocks are now adhered and have strength added back again.

1:08 I know you've got a mask on - but breathing in cement dust will lead to silicosis . Highly recommend watering it down before grinding . .

Yes concrete dust is very bad, you definitely don't want to breathe that stuff in. Thank you for watching!

@@amidwestfamily112 Thanks for all your tips . I tell guys grinding away in big clouds of concrete dust about silicosis and they've never heard of it . Bottom line ... nothing goes in the lungs but air . Even bakers in the Victorian Era , by the time they were 50 years old suffered from respiratory problems from all the flour they inhaled . .
