When cut smear wood glue on the cut off sides this will prevent cracks ,it’s a bow making technique.

Jp cutter try sealing ends with wax I use recycled candlewax melted in old sauce pan but your right im surprised the big ass knot didn't split more I always removed thorns before storage and seasoning I had a few stuck in me not a good ride normally a bad crack means you can turn it into a cudgel I remove thorns rubbing stick against tree but also avoid sticks with lichens on its indicator its old could have woodworm in may infection your stash 🍀🐾🦊👍

Thank you mate 👍 got plenty of spent candles will definitely save the wax now! Are these shanks worth sealing now or they bit too far gone now you think? There is sum impressive cracks 😂 definitely gonna wax and seal all open cut parts this harvesting season

@@CutterStickMan yeah worth saving you can make cudgels from em for game or fishing dispatching can drill hole in top end fill with lead use dust mixed up with glue to hide hole and a plug in but removing the thorns best to rub sticks against tree as they are brittle break of easy is why they are sods to dig out your skin like sea urchin spines but you need knuckles on sticks rubbing against tree removing thorns only safer for you and won't destroy knuckles 👍🦊🐾🍀

@@CutterStickMan when I make my shillaglahs I think I'm like in 1800 what would irish have to use as I prefure old school ways its also cost effective as I'm always broke too upcycling is way forward especially as only rain comes down cost of everything goes up lol 👍🦊🐾

@@Rhinevalleysticks I only use old irish 1800 techniques to hand carve my shillaglahs no modern stuff used I prefure hard graft no corners cut so I use what would be available in 1800 it's experimental archaeology I know but I always loved history or living history but good tip 🍀👍🦊🐾
