Huge thanks for the video! Rare are the one who show how to open this the right way. After removing all the components, changing the screen was a piece of cake. Heat gun and patience is the key!
A few people have asked about replacing the LCD. You need to follow the instructions in this video, then remove the 2 ribbon connectors joining the digitizer to the digitizer controller board, and the twin ribbon connector joining the LCD to the main board and digitizer controller. Heat up the glass border of the LCD to around 150 degrees to remove it. Take it slowly using plastic or metal spudgers The Glass and LCD are a single component and have to replaced together. Sounds difficult but its quite easy!
WARNING: This video is not a good example for taking down your Surface RT. Thanks CNET for totally rushing through all the major steps here. TIPS: Do not pull up all the way from the bottom of the back plate, you will will break the top corners off. (There are tabs in the top left and top right that the back plate presses into.) Instead gently pull up a bit from the bottom and then the top until the whole plate comes loose. (There was some adhesive it was partially stuck to as well.) Then lift the back plate up from the bottom to unhook the battery ribbon cable. Be especially careful here, it is ridiculously fragile. The white, bottom edge is the part that flips up. Also, be careful with that top trim, it's tough to get off and needs pulled straight out and don't forget the screw that is hidden underneath the Microsoft security tape. Great take down video...NOT.
Faisal Abbas Top piece of trim comes off really easily. Just get a knife blade between the back cover and the trim and lever it away from the tablet. Unclips and clips back on real easy.
Utter bullshit video, bypassed important details ended up breaking 2 corners and ribbon cable because "lift cover up" without saying there were 2 clips that needede to be undone first
@jnealah; you would want to take the screen off and heat gun it. Remember to take off the screen because if you don't you might mess up some of the chips
Hi, my tablet OS will not boot, is left with a black screen and Surface logo . I downloaded from the Microsoft website boot image. I Inserted recovery drive into the USB port of Surface. Press and hold the volume down button while pressing and holding the On / Off button on my Surface tablet . Surface When the logo appears, release the Volume button. And it does nothing ... stays in black with Surface logo
now this is more of what I've been looking for. Found my wife's old tablet she got in like 2013. Not really wanting to just wipe it and sell/recycle it, was really hoping if there was anyway to re-purpose anything. Got a couple of raspberry pi's that I wanted to do some projects for.... Anyway to get the touch screen working with a pi 3b or even a 4?
Still got mine & still works perfectly - even the battery will play will play over 5 hours of video - amazing for its age. I use it mostly to watch Netflix & you tube.
so, you know, how they say the RT wont let you install linux or some such...what if you load it on an ssd and then install that ssd on your RT? think it would boot up? any one have a thought on this?

Hello CNET, is it possible to contact Bill Detwiler somehow? I have a Surface Pro 3 and i would like to ask him about it, because Microsoft can't help me fix it and i have some pictures and movies from my travelling i SO much want to have. But i can't get it startet anymore, i have tried everything they told me. And i rather get my pictures that getting money back for it. :(
Battery might last a year if ur lucky then 50 bucks for one of those and you can't download anything cause it needs the extra juice too do it and be plugged in just trash
This guy needs more experience with repairing/tearing apart devices before doing it for thousands to see and copy. What "appears to be another speaker" is a vibration motor. That's not a big deal, but some of the other videos have been quite misleading
This is the worst bit of technology I have ever wasted my money on - Slow, laggy, buggy, unresponsive, limited and utterly useless - It has been nothing but a coaster for the last 2 years! Even loading something as simple as RU-vid is a mammoth task for it and always freezes! ... Who even uses Internet Explorer anymore? Not even able to download chrome and use it as a default browser >:( Speakers are also useless!
