@teddydalton8507

I think that the best way to name either/or allelic hets is to call them a het for whatever the allelic combo is. So a het clown or cryptic would be het crypton, a het for either albino or toffee could be a het toffino and even taking it into the incomplete dominant world, a yellowbelly or asphalt could be called a het freeway. In the case of a morphmarket ad or ad on some other platform, further detail as to what the pairing was or the long form (i.e. 'het for either clown or cryptic') could be used, and the 'het crypton' tag would be a useful shorthand.
@SurvivorVio
@SurvivorVio 3 года назад
Hi I am a biologist with part of my degree in genetics and genome analytics Scientificly correct you would call them as followed: KK : homozygote cryptic KC : heterozygote cryptic but visual since you can not tell them apart You would need to say "visual cryptic 33% homozygote" or "visual cryptic 66% heterozygote". The normal looking Babies from the het clown to the crypton pairing Are "100% heterozygote clown or cryptic" and I think this would be the best way to name them. Leaving the possible out since there is no possibility because they are 100% het, we just don't know the allel for sure.

This is great, love it, confused by you using co-dom instead of incomplete dominant. I find that when using punnett tables dominant and recessive describes the genotype. While incomplete and co-dom describes the phenotype for allelic traits. When describing non-allelic traits they are nearly all incomplete-dominant. While some can be described in more detail to be said to behave co-dominantly such as the pied.
@Dan_Slee
@Dan_Slee 2 года назад
Just to clear this up, outside of the Ball Python/Reptile community, Codominance is the same thing as dominant. Incompletely dominant means the allele does not fully supress the expression of the other allele in a heterozygous form, or to more simply state it, you can see a difference between a homozygous normal, a heterozygote of the trait and normal, and the homozygous of the trait. Codominant, or Dominant would mean that whether there is 1 (het) or 2 (homo) copies of the trait, it is visually the same and indistinguishable. There has been a ton of confusion over this since the late 90s/early 2000s about this, but understanding the difference and why they are different helps dramatically in understanding breeding projects. To take it even further you can say that whether or not something is considered Recessive, Incompletely Dominant, or Completely Dominant is dependent on the landscape that is the phenotype. For example, when Pieds were still new to the hobby they were considered strictly recessive, in that the "normal" phenotype coming from Africa at the time showed no difference from a het for pied. Now after decades of people having them and becoming familiar with their progeny, there are visual differences that can be used to reliably predict whether an offspring is "het for pied" or not. Part of this is us getting better at seeing it, and part of it is the bottleneck of genetics within the USA since wild caught/captive hatched imports are mostly a thing of the past. The phenotype of "normal" and the commonality of other genes that change the phenotype (multi gene animals are all the rage) means we could start calling Pied incompletely dominant to a degree.

First Id like to say I respect Justin hugely but the Cryptic was initally called the Carnival Clowns and were produced by KJay of Windsor On, Canada. There was a huge debate if they were really nice clowns or there was something genetic going on. In the end KJay dropped the tag Carnival Clowns. Other may have went on to have these animals in their collection but KJay produced the first cryptic. Id also like to say it could be that KJay acquired the founding animals from the Bells as the first Pastels in Canada came from Greg Graziani but this is yet to be determined.

@jodielejeune7278 2 года назад
I know this is an old video so I'm not sure if this question has been addressed/answered yet or not. But at 7:24 in the video, why couldn't the 2 normals be listed as 50% HET Cryptic AND 66% HET Clown? Since in that particular example paring, except let's assume those genetic percentages are positively known in the parents of only one parent is 100% HET Cryptic, but both parents are 100% HET Clown, so isn't that the usual way of listing those recessive percentages for babies??? 50% HET for a recessive gene if only one parent is 100% HET for that gene? & 66% HET for a recessive gene if both parents are each 100% HET for that gene? Or am I just not understanding something correctly because yes this is very confusing of allelic recessives lol.

Ugh the use of the term "double het" to describe an animal that is HETEROZYGOUS (Het.) is confusing and problematic. They are not double het, they are heterozygous at the same locus for two non normal traits. Double het implies you are talking about multiple locii, such as a double het lavender albino/clown. Also it is not correct and is confusing to keep saying the "allele" when you should be saying locus/locii. The location where the alleles reside is the locus. There are 3 alleles being discussed for that locus, Clown, Kryptic, and Normal. Also when you describe the unknown "het" offspring in scenario 2, they would be 50/50% Het. Clown OR Kryptic. 0% Het. Normal would be another way of putting it. For scenario #3, the non homozygous clowns would all three be 33% Het for Kryptic as that is the smallest chance, which follows the normal convention for nomenclature. You would be correct saying they are 66% het for Krypton as well, but that would be like saying 0% het for normal. A weird way of stating it, counter to the normal naming convention.
