I failed my polygraph test because the examiner said I was fidgeting with my legs while answering questions, but I don't recall doing so. I do remember feeling drowsy during the test, which the examiner even pointed out. Now that I've failed, I'm unsure what to do next. Getting this job was important to me because it would bring me closer to my daughter, who lives in another state with my ex-wife, and this setback feels like a punishment.

I am a police pre-employment polygraph examiner and it is refreshing to see someone making a video with some accurate information. The other advice I would give is to let your body do whatever it will do naturally during the exam. Do not try to control your physiology. This will be obvious to an experienced examiner. Controlled breathing, patterned movements, etc can cause issues on an exam. Overall, a law enforcement examiner is just making sure there is nothing someone is intentionally wittholding. We are not concerned with minor mistakes people have made in their past as long as the person is being up-front and honest. Remember....honesty and integrity are the key pillars to law enforcement.

@@Lfraizquestion, is the polygraph general questions or are they customized for you?
@Lfraiz
@Lfraiz 4 месяца назад
@@IsaiahCR7 you will have an interview before testing begins. This will go over your application and or questionnaire you filled out for the position. That will be specific to your personal history. Then for the exam portion, you will have standard yes or no questions based on everything you already discussed in the interview. So the exam itself is standardized, but you will need to make sure you discuss anything relevant to those topics before hand so that you are confident in your answers for the exam. Stages of the exam include a "pre-test" interview, a practice exam, the actual exam, and a post test interview to clarify anything that may come up. You may even be asked to go into further testing for follow up. This is also standardized questions. Hope this helps!

So I’m looking for assistance. I’m a combat veteran honorably discharged with no criminal record. I applied for a police department about 6 weeks ago and despite passing the written exam, oral interview, and pt test I was dropped from the hiring process for failing the polygraph. When I asked for an appeal I was told all results are final and I would have to wait 3 years to reapply. First I hope all departments are not like this 😡 and second despite the rise in retirements/resignations and drop in recruitment with fewer people not wanting to be cops WHY do departments make it so hard for people to become cops? I get certain aspects but not returning calls or emails for weeks and ignoring applications for months? I’m beginning to think police departments don’t want to hire people. I have applied to other departments in other states with some taking as long as a year for the process. Any ideas?

The exact way mine was, was “have you disclosed all information for crimes against a person”. It was this long list of crimes, assault, child endangerment, and etc.. There was also crimes against property and job related section. I failed mine, I wasn’t allowed to control my breathing at all and I failed the one for crimes against a person. I’ve never hurt anyone, I wouldn’t lay hands on a person and I don’t have children. I just graduated college with my degree in CJ, and it feels like a bunch of money wasted rn. I didn’t lie, and it sucked I couldn’t move at all so my legs and hand was starting to cramp up. I do have my opinions about it, as I’ve done a lot of research over the polygraph. I feel like I hit a wall though rn.

Nothing could stop you now if you were that well off and loved money and power overall you would have inherently been able to victimize someone else and put them in danger and lie to them as if you were so much in need yourself to provide for people that is what I have with my family and thousands of dollars spent too for my chances to get a great job and get away from my parents awfully powerful grief over money and power- As a voter I just keep my sights set on running for commissioner positions in local politics to try to make a difference assuming my parents don’t mind nor do they give a damn about how much money has been lost to their stupidity and juvenile politics. Now I am just focusing on Johnny Depp movies like Secret Window and it’s because I believe Johnny Depp has what it takes to make me a whole, content and happy person since he can help me remember what I am made up of and just what is so cool about me like eating cereal and thinking I am so weird stuff like I have to buy posters for my bedroom of him and pray I get hired as a cop soon!

Give it a shot at a different department. You are not the only one that has failed a polygraph, and you won't be the last. Look into federal agencies (Secret Service, border patrol, etc.) and just keep pushing. You may not start at the department you want, but you can always transfer later. Just keep looking, you got this.

They made me go to my PCP and I had to get a bunch of tests. My cardiac specialist just said I’m too sensitive to adrenaline. Every time I’m really happy, nervous, or just get excited because of something stupid like a package in the mail, my heart shoots up to at least 115bpm. I have a clean history, no drugs, crimes, etc. but I’m worried that them seeing my high heart rate will make it look like I’m lying even though it’s just nerves. If my heart rate is consistently high the entire time would that be better then it spiking at random times?

I pass polygraphs with flying colors all the time because I'm completely honest during the background process. Also polygraphs are mainly about the breathing. If you are breathing too hard or short of breath then deception will come up in the exam. The main thing is to breath in and out like a wave in a ocean. Lastly you have to be completely calm. Let you No be NO and let your Yes be YES.

Maybe I am ignorant of industry standard procedures but would it not be common for the examiner to get a baseline of that person then making their evaluation from that with the data they receive? Nonetheless, controlling your breath is a good way to stay focused and calm which will help heart rate and other response from the body that may have an effect on measurements taken. But you have the core solution to that which is to be honest and confident in your answer. Your brain isn’t going to be evaluating your answers behind your back as if it knows you stole that pencil in the 2nd grade but you forgot it’s when people start to 2nd guess themselves which only increases anxiety and the fight or flight response. If at that time your memory suggests x didn’t happen then it didn’t happen and just be confident with that answer and move on.

can you maybe do a video on the behavioral test portion of the ncjosi 2? I hate how widely each statement can be interpreted and how much it can affect your answer. I started having scattered answers because of the different interpretations I was having. and the fact its a computer test gives you no ability to explain yourself either on your answers or ask questions. and even the extra questions they use to test your consistency/honesty could almost actually even leave you with an answer thats contradictory to your answer to a prior statement depending on the interpretation. Is there a way to orient myself for this portion of the test better?

@vielumiereg9794
@vielumiereg9794 Год назад
Usually a lot of departments will have a questionnaire about your drug usage that will determine if you're even qualified to apply in the first place. For example, one department I applied to had one of these questionnaires, one of the questions was, "Have you used tobacco or any nicotine based product in the last 12 months?"... If you answer yes to that question, they just won't even let you access the application. Some departments where I used to live up in GA for example, will tell you that if you've ever done hard drugs, you have to be at least 10 years clean. Other departments may tell you that you straight up don't qualify, some departments are ok with marijuana as long as you haven't used in the last 6 months, some departments will tell you that you have to be clean for 3 years before you can apply, some departments even go as far as asking if you're a habitual user, which they might define as using marijuana more than 10 times total, or something along those lines. So it really just depends on the department because they all tend to differ a little. But as far telling them... Yes, you should. The entire process is not so much about how clean your background is, and more so about whether you're going to lie to them or not. They're looking for honesty and integrity, not perfection. If you lie to them about anything, let alone drugs, they're pretty much going to toss you out of the process.

Not much else other than bad advice here. "Just be honest." Doesn't work. Honest people fail just as much, if not, more often than liars pass. They get manipulated into reacting to the truth and later confessing to something they didn't do. "Don't play games with it." Why not? That's what you do with toys. The machine doesn't do anything but measure how nervous you are, and reactions mean little more than a focal point in an interrogation after the fact. So react where you need to react, and relax where you need to relax. Even if you pass with flying colors, they'll find something to grill you on, so make sure you don't confess to anything.

However with having heart surgery, I do repress my breathing when I am pressured so I can grasp the situation, and sometimes I need those deeper, thoughtful inhalations to grasp a breath. Do you think this will deeply effect me? I know wherever I go they will know this about me-but will they make room for it in the polygraph or will I be disqualified because it may possibly be inconclusive? I am curious to know.

I’ve been disqualified from 6 different departments because of my past from ages 16-22 I got into fights I stole I rode in stolen cars I got expelled from school I’m 32 yrs old now and my past will not allow me to be considered a real candidate even tho it’s been 10 yrs since my immature lifestyle they say they’re not looking for perfect people but they’re definitely not looking at ppl like me

The problem is tho when you don’t lie but you’re just nervous! To many people have said I didn’t lie I was nervous tho and failed too many times for it to be dismissed as a flook because truth is if the examiner has a personal issue with let’s say smoking pot they can fail you with no repercussions on them it’s like they are the last word for the department! Which to me is grazy

Polygraph machines are actually easy to manipulate if you know how to do so. Thank goodness the results from them aren’t admissible in court. Also, never assume you failed a polygraph test just because the police tell you that you have, they will lie in order to trick you into admitting to something you did or perhaps didn’t do.

AFIS hit on a set of prints on a LE Officer several years after he was hired. He passed two different polygraphs during the hiring process. This officers prints from entering autos several years prior were lifted on numerous vehicles. I guess this transgression was not listed by this person on their on background questionnaire. I retired two years ago after 26 years. I never used the polygraph for cases I investigated. I personally underwent two polygraph examinations. I passed the first one but the second I did not. Several of us from the hiring pool were contacted by the PD to retest a week later due to the polygraph examiner failing every applicant that particular morning. I have no confidence in the polygraph...

I have complex ptsd, and although I’ve had nearly 100% relief of symptoms with acupuncture, I STILL panic over stupid things at times, especially anytime I know the answers will make or break my future. A direct result of trauma. I’ve spent the last decade recovering. I’d love to, and believe as a 911 dispatcher, I could make a difference for other people who’ve experienced the same level of trauma. Would my reactions eliminate me? I’m brutally honest about my past, my mistakes, etc. just all of it. Even while being honest, I panic. Should I not bother?

When it came to one of the question, after asking the same question twice, I made a stupid move and instead of clearing my throat I held my breath, it made my heart rate go up and I failed the test. The question was not related to drugs or if I have stolen anything. Do you think the failed poly will stop me from joining law enforcement?

I am currently in school for criminal justice and when i graduate i want to start applying to departments. Here's my story, in my younger years i was wild and got arrested a few time for some serious things. But that was a long time ago and a few of the charges were on a pretrial diversion as long as i stayed out of trouble. I did. So now im in the process of having my record expinyand vacated. I plan on being truthful with my past and where it took me. I also plan on showing how serious i am by getting a 4 year degree in criminal justice and taking the steps necessary to get my record cleared. Do you think I'm wasting my time by applying or going to school for law enforcement. Have you ever heard of a situation like mine? I plan on getting recommendations from important people like my judge and church leaders as well. Im very serious about getting a career in law enforcement and ive been told by a couple of people that having a past could potentially be a good thing as I have experience with certain things that others dont and know what to look for when it comes to certain things. Anyway I would appreciate any tips and feedback you may have. Thanks a bunch, love your content.

Yes it will have an effect just like any other job that you apply for but people are subject to change. Take responsibility but you don’t have to over divulge information in an attempt to make yourself look credible; let your degree and references suggest to why you are someone who has changed in a positive way by learning from your mistakes. Those experiences are not any more valuable compared to someone who didn’t face such circumstances and only suggest that at one point of time you may have had a deviated way of thinking and from a forensic perspective that will be something that is looked into right away. If you have two similar candidates who would you rather hire; someone with no criminal history and within a year will have just as much valuable experience you have or someone with a criminal background and who do you think is more likely to make a wrong decision in such a difficult working environment. If mental health is an issue take the necessary steps needed so that when you have to undergo these evaluations/polygraphs you have the mental fortitude, confidence, and normal manifestation of behaviors to have success. You will be good in the end if you do what is needed to be done and it won’t be easy which is one reason why many people never change and get stuck in their ways of living and that’s without taking into account all the other socioeconomic factors. “I take responsibility of my actions by recognizing how I had an negative effect to myself and community “

Just remember that being honest is not how you pass. Honest people fail and liars pass all the time. Just react to what you should react to, and relax where you need to relax. The machine measures nervousness. Even if you pass with flying colors, they'll find something to interrogate you on. Here's where people usually fail. Once the machine is off, you are technically not under any pressure, so they can use your confessions here. Even if the machine shows no reaction when they said it did, and even if you told the truth. Don't confess to anything.

Polygraphs are pure pseudescience, and they exclude from public service many individuals who would serve with consistent honesty and dedication. There is also NOTHING that shows polygraphs result in better hires. The UK does not use polygraphs for their military, LE or security services, and they are not any worse off for it. A standard interview and background check, which us how they do it, are enough.

@UnderPresser 10 месяцев назад
Polygraph are not done for that reason and have never served as a training tool, and should not be used as one. And do polygraph employees advance faster, get fewer complaints, or stay on the job longer than those who don't? Has that ever been looked once? There are many standardized tests to determine a person's degree of honesty and truthfulness. A polygraph is not one of them.

Polygraphs are pseudoscientific baloney. They in no way determine truthfulness. What they can sometimes do is identify fear. The polygraph’s real power is as an investigatory tool. From a psychological perspective it does wonders to make interviewees talk. That’s the real advantage of the polygraph. The entire rigamarole is designed to convince you that they can discriminate truth from lies. Ironically, that’s a lie. However, I do like the polygraph and the process. As a law enforcement officer I want as many tools at our disposal to weed out people that don’t have the character to be in law enforcement.

The actual answer is yes. Petty theft or some other misdemeanor charge isn’t worth following up on…but if you admitted in a poly that, for example, you raped someone…that will certainly cause an investigation to start and if evidence can be found to elevate to PC…game on. They generally give that warning before the poly interview starts.
