I really love your videos where you introduce different products and techniques to your builds. I think it adds a layer of comfort for the hobbyist to know we can do these. Adding lighting and resin are game changers. John great job and an amazing build. Keep up the great work and fabulous vids! Thank you.

I really really like the quality of this particular piece. Everything you did with the resin from the cutting and adding cotton balls REALLY sells the ice look to it. The LEDs are also a nice touch as always. For a new entry in spells, perhaps black tentacles? I think that would look pretty cool.

Hey Levi! I did a tentacle spell piece for my group. My daughter 3D printed some tentacles and I made a dungeon tile with a scooped out area for water and glued the tentacles into it. Then I added Realistic Resin Water. It turned out pretty cool looking! You can check it out on Tabletop Crafters Guild on fb.

I'm not sure, but the weld on may not have worked because of the mold release. Just a guess
@Samhain_III

Think so too. Mold release is meant to prevent the bonding, I think it just worked a bit too good ^^°
@TabletopWitchCRAFT
@TabletopWitchCRAFT 2 года назад
Yep, after reading these comments I think you're right too. Thanks Brad.
@seangere9698
@seangere9698 2 года назад
I can think of two things that could be the problem. One: The mold release interfered with the Weld-on. This is why you use a mold release after you glue it together. Two: if the Weld-on works like most Acrylic glues you don't put some on each piece and try to stick them together but place the two pieces together and add a little of the glue to where the two pieces are touching and let capillary action suck the glue into the gap and give it the advised time to set. Personally I would go with the first option more then the second one as you can put the glue on both pieces but it generally takes longer to set this way.
@Walsfeo
@Walsfeo 2 года назад
Came here to say just this. Don't expect anything to stick when you've added a release agent.

@Shin_Lona

Yeah, the residue was likely interfering with the reaction. I'm not 100% sure on acrylic glue, but I'm thinking it's the solvent type where it actually melts and fuses the material together. He would have needed to clean the areas to be glued with something like acetone first.
@seangere9698
@seangere9698 2 года назад
@@Shin_Lona yeah it is the type that melts and fuses the acrylic also acetone you have to be careful using on acrylics as it can etch acrylics as it is a major component in most acrylic glues.

Nice trick with the cotton/UV resin! I look forward to seeing you work with the new stuff. Incidentally, I've been using an old, inefficient fan that vibrates like crazy to simulate a vibration table for curing resin. Works like a charm. I'd still use a pressure pot if you need near-zero bubbles, or at least a few passes with a lighter, but it works amazingly well.
@TabletopWitchCRAFT

Thank you Matthew, and very creative with that fan. The resin I used here I didn't do a single thing to remove the bubbles... and not 1 bubble in the entire block. Really great stuff.

Another great vid. I will be ordering some of that clear resin. A few tips: Just use hot glue glue your mold box. Also, just regular foamcore for for the mold box walls. Much faster and cheaper too. Try a spray paraffin mold release. You will get much better results. I've been building molds and casting for over 25 years. I learned my craft back in the golden age of resin kits in the early 90's. Keep up the GREAT work!

when you're using Weld-On or any other thin acrylic cement, it's better if you leverage capillary action to draw it into the joint. Set the pieces together that you want to cement, then with a brush or glue syringe, run a bead of cement along the entire joint. The cement is so thin that it'll be drawn into the joint. Then give it a minute to flash-off and set.
@TabletopWitchCRAFT

This was the second lesson I learned from my failure with the Weld-On. I think the main reason was the mold release. I always say... As long as you learn something from every craft it was a success !

My understanding of how Weld On works is by chemically melting the styrene or plexi so at the end of the process the two pieces have been 'welded' together. It is not a glue. It is an extremely fast process. Put the two pieces together and then add the Weld On to the seam. Use a needle tipped bottle applicator. It doesn't take much to work.

A traditional fireball which I know you’ve done before in your diorama but I think you make it where the ball was flying through the air before it explodes. A snare of vines like a Druid would use. A wave of water, simple magic missiles… ohh raise dead with a small hand full of skeletons climbing out of a purple glowing pit. That would look cool… there are so many. I am loving this playlist. Another gorgeous piece! Just a thought about reducing materials use - have some angular intrusions on the base of the mold so you don't need to remove so much material when shaping it later? To reduce curing time - lay the mold on its side so the depth is only one inch-ish. Would hot glue work to hold the walls and base of the mold?

Great ideas Mykl. Yes hot glue will work. It's what I ended up using to seal the leaks. Some resin gets very hot when curing, I'm always a bit nervous about the hot glue getting to the point where it will fail, but hasn't happened yet.

This piece is absolutely beautiful John! Now I want to make an ice cave and ice walls! Have you ever thought of making cave crystals? How would you go about making cave crystals? I carved some out of styrofoam and painted a light blue mixed with Mod Podge and then gave them a coat of Mod Podge Gloss. They weren't glossy enough to suit me so I sprayed some Acrylic Sealer Gloss Finish on them and that turned out OK. But they still don't look glossy enough for crystals. I have a product called Clear Polyester Casting Resin and I'm thinking of mixing some up and either brushing it on or dipping the "crystals" and seeing if that will give me the desired look. But! I don't know if the heat from the chemical reaction will melt the styrofoam! Have you ever worked with this stuff before?
