This Christmas crafty instructional video is one of three where Calvary's Denise Sawyer gives a demonstration of making Japanese inspired ornaments for the Christmas season. First up, how to make Kimekomi.
Kimekomi:
This art was created by a Japanese monk more than 200 years ago. He picked up a willow tree branch, carved a figurine and then embossed old fabric into the groves he made. Balls made like this became children’s toys and prized decorations. The pattern in the pre-made kits is a simple one, but more complex versions are easy, after you’ve got the basics down.
To create a new ball with this pattern, find the equator line (slight line around the midpoint) and made a mark (I use a ballpoint pen) to show your starting place. Use a cloth tape measure or a thin strip of paper to measure the circumference. Divide that into fourths. (If using a strip of paper, cut it to circumference length and fold the paper in half, then in half again. Mark the fourths on the ball with your pen. Fold the paper (or calculate the measurement for the circumference divided by 8) in half again, mark the 8ths. Divided every other 8th into 16ths.
Using a ball point pen in a circle compass, connect the marks - it should be:
1/8th, 1/16th, 1/16th (= 1 quarter of the ball)
1/8th, 1/16th, 1/16th,
1/8th, 1/16th, 1/16th,
1/8th, 1/16th, 1/16th

This is a lovely use for remnants! I think it will be fun to do a mixed up version with many coordinating fabrics. My tree is jewel colored anyway. I will be trying this -- thanks you!

What is the name of the tool you are using to tuck the fabric into the groove. I thought I heard you say ALL but it can't be that?

She is using an awl tool. You can use any long thin object to tuck - an upholstery needle, anything like that.
