When you restore a lathe to this kind of beauty, you realize the love of this comes from the look as much as anything else, like making something useful. I really hope to achieve something like this with the several old lathes I have.
I just restored one, exact same model. Hell, it's the same color too!!! I installed a counter shaft & ALSO a gear reduction unit 25:1! It'll turn slower than molases! Also have a motor that bypasses the gear box for higher speeds for wood! Cool Tool!!
Oh man I would love to see a step by step of what all you did to get such a great restoration on this. I just bought one that's in good shape, but nowhere near this nice, and I want to fix it up real nice.
Just found your YT chan & went thru all vid’s u previously uploaded per this exact model, since I’ve likewise recently acquired one identical to this one. Mine was rusting away in a dilapidated old building… came w/4 jaw chuck. Its spindle tho, has a backing plate for a 3 jaw chuck WELDED ONTO THE DANG SPINDLE !!! 🤯 It’s missing that “engine turned” aluminum plate over headstock casting. Also missing pinch collar that should be on spindle, just behind 3-step pulley… not really a big deal; can make one. Thinkin’ I’ll attempt to “repair” this original spindle on the 1940’s Southbend 16” lathe that I use.. will require destroying that 3-jaw backing plate tho. The bed ways & other ways all seem to have very little actual wear, other then a decent layer of surface rust overall that I’m still in the process of removing from every part. Oh &, gear-change cover is missing… several of those on eBay now for reasonable prices.. will wait on pissin’ away any pennies on this unit until I’ve proven being able to salvage spindle. Question: What size is the Morse Taper inside of spindle end?
Mine didn't need any work other than wiping it down. I think they may be coated with a clear finish. Perhaps removing the old finish with lacquer thinner or acetone or similar and spraying on a new finish would work?
Hi. Nice video and thank you for sharing. I recently bought a lathe similar to yours. I'm planning to add a treadmill motor to it. Would you please tell me what is your speed controller? Thank you.
Hola amigo tengo uno igual y me faltan los engranajes de la caja. usted podria pasarme la medida y cantidad de dientes para yo fabricarlos ? muchas gracias
Nice, do you have any instructions on installing the motor, I guess I can figure it out from your video, lol, i have a bent spindle on mine, got to take it apart so i can take measurements then cut a new one if can with the slite wobble.
@@mcrv7a Hi there. I have that exact same motor in a treadmill in my garage, j want to put on my 109 ... any tips you might could give me to setup and use of that motor?
@@mcrv7a I am thinking in changing the original tool holder, for a micro quick tool change, with 6mm indexable tool bits www.banggood.com/Mini-Quick-Change-Tool-Post-Holder-Kit-Set-For-TableHobby-Lathes-p-983345.html?cur_warehouse=CN and www.jbcuttingtools.com/epages/es461493.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/es461493/Products/%22SCLCR%2006%22/SubProducts/%22SCLCR%200606%2006%22 Hope that should give better results
Where can I get the metal plate that is shiny and decorative on your lathe. The one I just purchased has that piece missing. I need to really clean mine and put some paint on it so it will look nicer. Thanks. Randy Camp
@@mcrv7a That is exactly the way I did it in my case, in my milling machine I glued the original aluminum plate to the base with double side tape, and used a mandrel with attached scoth brite, and made the pattern. Well worth the effort.
Hello, I am also finishing to restore a complete 109 lathe. Did you manage to remove the chatter in the surface?? I see the gears dont make too much noise, mine make a lot! any ideas on how to improve it? You can see photos of my lathe at: foro.metalaficion.com/index.php?topic=29135.0
