Video showing the easy way to get to Craigs Hut, where the 2WD parking area is if you don't have a 4WD as well as the last 3km section that is 4WD/AWD. Hope this helps some of you plan trips in the area and visit this iconic location!
Yeah you'd be fine taking an Xtrail this way to craigs hut. Honestly all you need is a bit of clearance over some of the humps. Last drove this a couple of months ago and it was in even better condition than this video.
I'm yet to explore Craig's Hut in a couple of weeks. I may only trek by foot to there from that road junction where the track starts. I only have a 2-wheel drive vehicle. This time of the season should be ok but I need to vigilante of wet weather. Nice scenery there.
Thanks heaps for posting this video. Always wanted to go-to craigs hut but was concerned my 4wdriving skill wouldn't b up to it. But after seeing this I'm now happy to give it a go. Cheers
Glad it was helpful, it's a pretty easy run going this way. Great to hear the from people like you that the videos are encouraging you to get out there.
Nice video. Got myself a Jeep Trailhawk so am contemplating Craig’s Hut as first outing. I would say I have the ground clearance no problem but that last bit of track has me worried on width . Don’t really want to scrape the panels on the way through any overhanging scrub.
You'll be fine, it's wider than it looks. When you say Trailhawk, that's the off-road version of the Cherokee right? Reasonably capable for what they are, don't think you'll have any issues on this track.
@@OffTheBeatenPathAus Thanks. Yes, I have the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Trailhawk version is the off road version. The Grand Cherokee is wider than the smaller Cherokee. Sorry for confusion.
@@yapa yes. You can google it on the Mt Stirling site. Sometimes it snows out of season and some very eager people drive as far as they can then hike in, in winter...
I've been wanting to get up there for years and I've decided that this summer is it. I'll be doing it a Subie Outback so I'm very apprecative of you filming the entire 3km track. Cheers, b. PS. Subbed. :)
No worries, you should be fine in an outback. Enjoy the trip, so worth it! Glad the footages has helped you out. It's not a long track so thought filming the whole thing would give people some peace of mind about tackling it.
Great video - thanks for posting 👍 We're looking at doing a small party of photographers up here soon and it's good for some of the guys to know you can make it all the way in basically a stock Prado or Landcruiser. Subbed 😉
Thx mate. That was exactly the idea of this video, show people just how accessible one of the most iconic destinations in the high country is! Have a great trip!
Two problems. The track is seasonally closed after the June long weekend, so won't be open to anyone at that time. Second problem, I don't think an XV on stock size tyres has enough rampover for some of the humps on this track. you 'might' make it but you might end up like the Ranger on the thumbnail of one of my watagans videos....
Just wanted to say thanks - this was a terrific video. Great length, great commentary - all the important bits so that I was able to drive there in the dark and get there for sunrise! Thanks!!
Loved the factual style of video; really informative. Have been wanting to go to Craig's Hut for ages, but was never too sure about access. Thanks heaps for this. New subscriber.
@@OffTheBeatenPathAus let me know if you planning any east track in near future as I really want to take my Pajero sport for a spin. But my preference will be easy tracks as I don’t have any additional gear in it yet.
@@sailwaywitme Easy tracks can be hard to predict but will keep it in mind. As you probably know I'm based on the VIC/NSW border in Albury Wodonga, where are you based? Feel free to shoot me a message via the OTBP facebook page if that's easier.
We recently drove up to the parking area, for the hiking track, in a VF Commodore wagon without issue. We certainly wouldn't have had a hope in hell of making it up the Clear Hills Track. The hike in was nice and not hard at all.
Glad you enjoyed it. When you say Campervan? What are we talking about? You'd need 4wd and decent clearance (ramp over) get over some of the humps - this is where campervans typically don't do well as they're long wheelbase, reducing the rampover.
I’ve done the 4WD section up to Craig’s Hut in a stock Kluger and did it easily. Just take the erosion humps on an angle and slowly to avoid scraping the exhaust.
@@patrickn3595 Nice yeah they're more capable than people give credit, especially the AWD ones. Did recover a 2WD Kluger a few years back on king billy track that was fun they were stuck in one of the river crossings
This has to one of the Best Craig's Hut Video Clips I have seen. Heading that way in the Adventra on the weekend of 31 March > 2 April, then heading home via Jamieson, Woods Point, Cumberland Junction, Reefton and down through Warburton.
@@OffTheBeatenPathAus It was a great run down through Woods Point, although, it was on a Sunday, and it was like a Ghost Town, We spent an hour just relaxing and looking around, and only seen one person. Then headed off to Matlock, the roads were not to bad from Matlock, and must be maintained well, then on to Warburton and home.
This was a really good vid good for people not very confident on trying to go to Craig’s hut on their own. You should do some one on one easy tours great job. I want to do this one day.
The location is stunning and its appeal is as a film location. But I have to agree a little. It's perhaps the only high country hut that's actually fake.
