I've been picking cranberries from the woods for more than 40 years. It is my favourite berry. I use only a tablespoon of honey for 2 cups berries and about 1/4 cup water. I like them tart, and I eat them raw and in muffins. I use the 'jam' on toast and as sandwiches. In fact, every school and working day of my life, I've eaten a cranberry sandwich. I never tire of them.

Cranberries are harvested in the fall so you might not want to swim for very long since the water will be cold that time of year where cranberries are grown. Plus the berries are quite firm and the skin strong so they don't release anything into the water. She says in the video they are like a small apple, and that is really exactly what they feel like. So when they flood the bog for harvesting it is to make it so the berries float around like a giant tub of bobbing for apples.

Not only America has them but also we in the Netherlands do. Somehow the plant got a huge wild culture on the island of Terschelling and a smaller one on the island of Vlieland which is professionally harvested each year. If you are a cranberry lover you ought to visit the island of Terschelling because it is unique.

Cranberries are often overlooked because they don't have that sweet syrup taste Americans demand with everything. But they can be drowned in sugar! All the dried cranberries at the store usually are. And they're packed with anti-oxidants. Granted nobody really knows what good that does but its the top sales pitch for every fruit and vegetable ever talked about.....

Back in Massachusetts, my childhood home was literally on the other side of the road where a cranberry bog was. I’d skate on it every winter.

That’s so funny we were sitting around the table at thanksgiving asking fresh or tube cranberry sauce. My son was afraid he’d hurt my feelings if he said canned. He said “no, I like yours mom, it’s just that I like the canned cylinder of sauce!” I told him well, if I had known that I would’ve put it in the blender, and molded it for you. So next year I think I am going to give him his own round home made cranberry sauce!

It's... traditional in many families to not hide the fact you got your cranberries out of a can. The can shape is intentionally preserved and is served standing upright. This makes it easier to get the right amount of sauce (via a thin slice with a knife), and amuses folks.
