The mules transported myself and three of my friends into the 48,000-acre Cranberry Wilderness for a backcountry fly fishing trip for trout. We loaded our camping gear on the mule wagon and headed up a narrow, gravel lane flanking the scenic Cranberry River to disappear from civilization for three days.
We were chased by a thunderstorm, hiked deeper into the wilderness to find more trout, and found some additional surprises on the way. Two of my comrades were new to the ways of the fly rod, but soon became addicted to the sport and the beautiful environment that mountain trout call home.

Don’t see many fish taken 😀 But looks like relaxing trip 👍

We caught a couple, but quickly learned the fish were no strangers to anglers. Thanks for watching!

I can remember a time when you would see more bear than people along the creek in the late spring, early summer.

Love fishing this section. But I prefer backpacking in and or biking in. Hauling big groups back on a horse trailer have a really negative impact on the entire wilderness fishing experience to many people and a lot of fishing pressure. But that is why I go at the end of season when crowd clears out.

Ben Allen Hi Ben and thanks for watching. I agree - backpacking in is my preferred method of fishing these wild places. The trip to fish Cranberry before the mule trip, that’s what a couple pals and I did. You may enjoy another video of mine - Backpacking for Brook Trout of Seneca Creek Backcountry

Nice video thanks for sharing. Nothing better than back country fly fishing. I usually backpack, never thought about mules lol. As for fly fishing being expensive (which it can be) I usually tell people that the tires on their bass boats trailer cost more than my fly fishing outfit lol

I agree, back country fly fishing is awesome - the fishing and the environment. The mule transport was a hoot! Thanks for watching!

Hi Sharon, thanks for watching and subscribing! I agree, the Cranberry is a special place. I'm planning a few more WV wild places videos. I'm headed back to the Smokies next month so stay tuned for that. Thanks again and safe travels to you!

I miss the old days before the Cranberry got popular. You could camp and fish above the gate all weekend and you would see more wildlife than people and catch a lot of fish. Just too many people in there for me these days.

As it is across our country. Tough to find quiet waters today - but, they are out there. Thanks for watching!

Didn't see the need for all the gear and mules but there's a great loop hike there from 150 to the Cranberry and up to the Williams river and back to 150. Great area.

Indeed, a great area. The mule wagon mode of transport into the CW is simply an additional way to explore the river. I’ll be on the trail you describe, early next spring with backpack and cameras. Looking forward to it. Thanks for watching!

Done the loop hike from Johnny Molloy’s guide book. Some good wilderness back in there.

Hi Micah and thanks for watching. Welcome to fly fishing! It’s an addictive sport with many great benefits. Such as exploring beautiful places like the Cranberry Wilderness. But until then, get some practice with that new fly gear on a local pond. Or in the backyard, casting to targets such as a bucket. Again, thanks for watching and i hope you subscribed to the channel. Many more adventures to come!

We used the Dogway shelter as a base camp. From there, we had quick options of fishing tributaries for brookies. Thanks for watching and subscribing!

Thanks we fly fish all over the mountain state for several years. But this is the first time I heard of this type of opportunity to get in there we have hiked in and did real well.

Yes, I too enjoy exploring WV with fly rod and backpack. Myself and a couple pals backpacked up the Cranberry as well as the mule trip. Both have advantages.
