Cranes are a family, the Gruidae, of large, long-legged, and long-necked birds in the group Gruiformes. The 15 species of cranes are placed in three genera, Antigone, Balearica, and Grus. Unlike the similar-looking but unrelated herons, cranes fly with necks outstretched, not pulled back.
Cranes are winter visitor birds in Pakistan. Three species of cranes visit Pakistan during winter season. These include; Common crane, Eurasian crane and Sauras crane. In Bannu and Kohat districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan hunters use to trap cranes live. Peoples in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are fond of keeping cranes as pets.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Wildlife Department has imposed a ban on crane hunting with guns. The department allows only live trapping of cranes in only a small numbers. This is just to stop killing of cranes by hunters.
