@parismason9776 on god. Su has the better band and compositions so I guess directors as well. Jackson is awesome second best in swac imo. Su has been historically a different beast and still in. Matter fact Jackson one Southern Southern THE Human Jukebox. Jackson leans heavily on bass and trombones SU is well balanced flutes could use work or new flutes it sounds like a flute im not musician but I listen I learn I hear. SU horns be going off. Trombones, drums, flutes could use work whatever that high pitch but low sound is.

Wow I must say I've watched this alot and watched your reactions to alot of videos but man JSU was very clean and balanced all nite and them nasty hangovers from SU and they had to get some old crowd favorites them songs wouldn't have hit if they were in a neutral surrounding and they purposely played behind Jackson in my opinion!

Glad to hear you make the distinction between French Horn and the "horn in F" / Mellophone. While pitched the same and having similar sounds, they are very different animals. Back when I was in high school most of the schools marched either Bb or F marching French Horns...and called them Mellophone. This always bothered me. I don't believe any other horn in the marching band world has a more confusing line of instruments in various keys.

@@Jordanm23613 You are completely mistaken, TC started off each round followed by JSU, SU matched the energy that was set by the bands before them, every time they played a love song, TC were the ones who brought the tempo down, and I believe JSU won in general… only because they were the only ones going toe-to-toe with SU while being more clean, but as for volume, they were undoubtedly the loudest and the most crank, don’t get it twisted bro

sir the txsu dancers are together the count that you was looking at is an illusion count or reflection so they are facing different ways on the second time they do it. Basically they face each other like a mirror sir.

In my opinion: Maniac by JSU deserves a 5 JSU’s highest in the Room deserves a 5 or SU’s deserves a 3 Let it rain should still get a 5 for the arrangement despite the tuba line mess up I’ll kill you by SU deserves a 5 Also at the 1:34:31 mark when JSU plays Make no sense you gave them a 4 but only counted it as three Prior to watching this video I too was of the opinion that Jsu won this battle but after he broke it down into rounds I could see that Jackson wasn’t in complete control, they both did an awesome job to me but I’d give it to JSU because they were definitely more consistent, if Southern was just as consistent then they would have won because they had better song selection. Whichever band you think won this battle it would be a lie to say that they did so by a great margin…

Once again, Crankfest turned into a BoomBoxfest with a couple of extra bands. You were WAY too generous with the 5s for SU. Also, it looks like a third of Talladega's student body is in the band. I was impressed by their progress. As for the Ocean of Soul, they just showed up to get outta Houston for a day or so. Overall, The Sonic Boom took this one.😎👍

Happy New Year @Steven. Thanks for the review of this classic fest. You asked about basses playing pedal tones. For me, it's annoying and distracting to hear random sousaphones playing pedal tones, "One band, One Sound". Now as you mentioned, if the entire section did it... that would be impressive to see/hear. I'm also not a fan of basses playing out of register (playing high notes), but that's just the MEAC/M100 in me. M100 Fall '93 White Whale (Sousaphone)

I would tend to agree with you. I'm SWAC but from an earlier time than these bands. I hate hearing baritones reaching into the f-horn/mello range and the mellophones doing the same constantly. Mellophones used to push to a Eb above the staff at most and it wasn't often. All that upper register playing tends to thin the sound of the section over time. Tubas, mellophones, and baritones shooting up and up started consistently around '06 and I've disliked it.

Jackson one in swac su a league of their own honestly. The one section off was i dont know it sounds like flutes high pitch but they are playing low. They sound like mariah carey hitting the high note but quietly and off key a bit. Are those flutes i dont think its clarinets.

I'm not from the SWAC and I like JSU and SU equally. Having said that, JSU won this battle. SU was a REAL close second but they lost to the Boom on this day. I'm always at awe that JSU can show up and show out at Crankfest but give a lackluster performance at BoomBox though, it should be the reverse.

Pay attention when SU and JSU play the same song back to back. Listen to the nuances in how they play it vs jackson. Im not sure why he liked jsu better. He says that then SU busts in with the trombones dun dun dun dun dun dun dun quick run. They they end with what sounds like in my head a rising you could never you could never ever you could never you could never eva f with us in my head lol. Im suprised band dude gave jsu a higher rating on that. Su adds complexities and they play better as one outside whatever that is them flutes clarinets something lol. There was one song they played and the flutes/clarinets started slightly off again but did finally blend well and even stand out. Use that as a piece to work on them whatevers SU. They just werent quite in sync with the band at key moments and off key too me quite often nah they was off key i have ears lol. I was thinking maybe it shoud sound like that and im wrong no i know what im hearing and it's not on key. Im critiquing SU because they can do even greater things if they remain humble and work on anything that needs it ie flutes and or clarinets. Horns dont play that high has to be a non horn wood wind instrument.

Yall don't understand musicianship yall hear loud and think suberb. Listen to the nuances technicality talent and good compositions. Su has that vs everyone on that field. Yall hear loudness and nothing else pay attention. Our people will make general statements with little to no validity and we carry that ignorance or not. Southern was better.
