Okay, gotta school a whole bunch of you on luge and ice tube sports in general · Modern ice tubes are incredibly expensive structures designed by a combination of former and active ice tube athletes (from bobsleigh, luge and skeleton) plus top-level engineers. For example, the ice tube built for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games cost more than 100 million dollars. In other words, if you crash it's mostly your fault so, you know, GET GOOD or get out of the tube. · Less than 5% of the competitors in the 2021 Luge Worlds failed to finish all of their runs. The actual fail rate is even lower if you take into account how most lugers completed all of their 4-5 competitive runs. · Yes, you steer the sled. If you pay attention the video you can see the sled moving left-right on the straights. You can also steer the sled with your body weight in skeleton (the face-down face-first version of this) and in bobsleigh you mostly move around by steering with the movable blades (shifting your body weight pays a role but it's not the dominant one). · Ice tube sports are tremendously expensive, it's not a hobby sport, you don't do it for fun outside maybe taking an open one-week course. Most of the ice tube athletes grew up very close to an ice tube or a relative was an athlete before them. All modern ice tubes offer 2 to 4 different starting points so inexperienced athletes can start their career with a shorter slower run. · 2-men sled competitions exist nowadays as a "legacy event". It made sense 80-90 years ago when the courses were a lot flatter and 2 people together could go a lot faster than someone going solo. The FIL is trying to have 2-women sled competitions at the World Championships soon and also have them for the 2026 Olympic Games.
Wow, thanks for ‘schooling’ me. This whole sport looks like something that maybe people used to do for a bit of fun, and is now being taken wholly too seriously.
Same with MX and SX ex riders usually design the tracks each weekend. They tend to take the health and welfare of the athletes as important. The well being of the athlete is more important than tv ratings. Wait... Isnt that every sport?....
What's the point of this "sport" if it's not for hobby and fun first? Like why would anyone compete in this if you ain't taking any money from it (since you say it's overly expensive) and you ain't taking any fun out of it? I know I would want to do it cus it looks fun. I love sledding down slopes.
Him holding the luge with proper form despite sliding entirely on his face makes this absurd in the most impressive fashion, he makes the whole thing look on purpose
@@BaconNCereal if you want human beings to recreate scenes from ice age the award winning animated film, just say so. I’d volunteer but don’t sell it as some sport
That was epic, right?! Imagine the sound reverberating in his head and throughout the helmet while his face was dragged that far 2cm from the ice, protected only by thin piece of hard plastic. I'll bet he was saying "HUH?!" For the next 20 minutes. LOL!
@@MikeJones-qn1gz - Nope, it's a very old idea coming from back when competitive sledding was slower and done in natural tracks - 2 guys were able to go much faster and it also has the teamwork factor, nowadays it's mostly a legacy thing (plus the teamwork thing is still very important).
Is it just me or there's something seriously wrong with that unusual chicane. Both single & double luges went off at basically the same location....just saying! 🤔
It’s a compilation of crashes from an event. So, it’d be a good bed everybody is gonna crash in the video. Some people made it through since there’s times on the board.
The FIL only considers you've finished a course if you're in contact with your sled, that includes if you're with your ass on the ice but still touching it with a foot or hand - It's a very important difference!
you would think that after multiple people fail on the same part of the same track, that they would lessen there critique and show at least some thought about maybe the track being the mistake or at least showing concern that its clearly a very difficult part and needs top level skill to get past.
Мне одному кажется что всему виной конченый трек? Они все практически в одном и том же месте покалечились. Я не знаю кто этот трек делал но делать зигзаг на прямой линии было плохой идеей.
@@DanArnets1492 Sorry, but I don't feel comfortable sharing my full legal name. I luged for a Thuringian club till my mid teens. Königssee was the last chicane I've been on while active. I acted as a trainer for the young lads for 2 years afterwards. So I surely wasn't a name in the sport.
It's one of few sports where excellence can look "boring" but it's exciting either way - Seeing the difference between these crashes and the fastest runs makes you see how much you have to drive the sled to be quick
In this track (and some others too), you need MORE than just cross the finish line to get a valid time: you need to climb the slowdown uphill part entirely - Even if they had crossed the line, the run would've been declared as "incomplete" for that reason
That's where you're wrong, kiddo - This ice tube is actually proof that you don't need very high speeds to make an ice tube challenging. This ice tube is like 20-30kph slower on its faster parts than the one in Whistler (used for Vancouver 2010) or the one in Yanqing (used for Beijing 2022 as I'm typing this)
@@DanArnets1492 oh so that was you standing on the podium?....my mistake....I didn’t realize that you was in the “tube” competing and training so hard for years on end that this particular section crashed so many of your competitors and you made it without any difficulty....my bad.
I understand ice tubes are incredible expensive to build. But you can build something wrong? With growth of the sport, maybe the speed they run now doesn't work with the old track?
This sport lookes like it's tons of fun, but also something that's super dangerous if things go really badly... then again, it's a sport where you hit speeds that rival that of motorsports, danger is to be expected. Anyway, is there a reason why these people retain their sledding-pose even when face down? I assume having your limbs tugged in is better to protect them from injury, but seeing people slide down the tube facedown without raising their arms to protect the head or face looks scary. But it's a baller sport ngl.
Can't say for sure, but I think you are correct. Keeping limbs in means you can't get caught on anything. I was told to do that if I feel in white water river rafting (different dangers, but the idea is the same).
3:07 -ish... it's reassuring to know that they teach you how to crash a luge while staying safe (seriously!), because you could be seriously hurt if you don't know what to do during a wipeout. I remember when I played wheelchair basketball and at the first practice every season, our coaches taught us how to fall out of our wheelchairs safely if we took a fall on the court.
The "lessons on crashing" regarding ice tube sports is more about "when to give up", when to just stop trying to go on - They also teach you what pose you should adopt if you've completely lost the sled AKA put yourself in a way so you don't gain speed
Even when going solo you can't see much ahead during turns due to the very aerodynamic position and the shape of the ice tube - When going alone it's a matter of memorization and finding visual cues (like the structure surrounding the course, parts of the ice that are painted, etc), in doubles "bottom guy" just does what the top guy tells him
@@DanArnets1492 but that just seems pointless there really is no point for doubles the bottom persons just doing the same as the top nothing different just now is teamwork
It's THE most challenging part of the track, it requires for you to be correctly positioned beforehand (too much to the left or the right will make it impossible) and then steer (move your body weight) your way around efficiently - Only like 5% of participants crashed but it's definitely a challenge
A combination of top-level engineers and former pro ice tube athletes (from both luge, bobsleigh and skeleton) - Modern ice tubes are incredibly expensive to build (the one used for Beijing 2022 cost over 100 million dollars for example) so it's no joke
All the people complaining that this sport is too dangerous should go watch a motorcross crash compilation if they really wanna see danger. I figure if you're gonna risk getting hurt doing something you're passionate about is worth it, plenty of people have to work dangerous jobs they hate and the world itself is dangerous so I'd way rather fly down a track taking the riak than work a shitty job that I might die doing anyways.
The world really isn't dangerous at all. For 30 y/o men/women in america you'd have a 0.002275% chance of dying and a 0.000976% chance of dying respectively each year. If you're in a 3rd world country, yeah sure fuck it, for first worlders? you absolutely have a choice. Even the poorest people have a choice to work completely safe jobs. That said, all for people doing stuff like this, you should have the freedom to do dumbass shit so long as it doesn't impact other people. Anyway I'd rather freeclimb than do shit like this, at least with freeclimbing you're in control, your life is based on your mistakes and chances are you'll die before ending up as a paraplegic. I can't imagine not being able to move at all because I wanted to slide down an icy hill real fast.
Let me go point by point: · It comes from back when luge races were on ice-covered forest roads · 2 dudes = more pushing power and a higher total weight (more speed) · He can't see but he can memorize the course (much like anyone except the driver do in bobsleigh) - Also, the guy on top can tell him stuff during the run
im sorry for laughing but the slow mo replays with them sliding on their face is hilarious. why do they have to replay her IN SLOW MO getting her faced ripped off by ice? embarrassing. to watch it live but in slow mo. lol
They call it a chicane but it's not, it's more like that one section in Virgina International Raceway where the track wiggles around and you're supposed to basically keep it mostly straight

@@JB91710 - I've been watching all 3 main ice tube sports (bobsleigh, skeleton and this) for a bit over 20 years - She's not an entertainer but everything she said in these cuts I made myself are entirely true. The wiggling section after the "kreisel" (360º downhill turn) is rather easy but it depends entirely on where you are as you enter it. You gotta use your body during the turn to put yourself in the sweet spot or you're gonna be upside down in a couple of seconds as 5% of the competitors of these Luge Worlds were.
