I wonder what was happening in the pits before the crash. Were there mechanics abnormally ready to change tires? Speaking about knowing or not knowing, I always felt Hamilton knew about the stolen technical information in Spygate. I also feel that Dennis asked Alonso to tell the press he knew and Hamilton didn't.
@CYMotorsport

AndyFromBeaverton I’m pretty you are correct about each of those statements haha I’m of the opinion the only stories were told were bc they were caught . I would do anything to have more footage. Or get my hands on the raw radio. I got pretty deep until I hit some inaudible stuff. That’s why for all it’s problems I really like F1TV today. They still try to limit some stuff when it’s controversial like hiding the replay for a couple hours but for the most part you can see almost everythingggg

HAHAH yes i have notes on that and it's in the blog. I used to work in finance i remember this being a major deal. the were ending end of the season and it was literally the 15th race. would have used ANYTHING. Also not in this video, Brundle gets REALLY cagey with a group of ING people in Parc fermé before the race trying to grab drivers to interview. you all are smarter than me - but i can't figure out why he was so on edge about it. it did seem really set up but yeah a lot of weird they were down there and like grabbed him to talk awkwardly

@Conservator. 4 года назад
Stijn Weijters You are much to harsh on ING imo. ING had a simple sponsor deal with the team. ING was a very large but relatively unknown bank and by being the name sponsor of the F1 team they simply bought publicity. Nobody could have foreseen the event described in this video. It’s common practice to stop a sponsorship when the sponsored entity does something illegal or against the rules of the sport. Just like cyclist are fired as from their teams if they are caught using doping. ING had every right to terminate the sponsorship. The fact that it was convenient for them at the time doesn’t make it wrong or even dubious imo.

@@goqsane Lying cheat? LOL. How is he a cheat? Team personnel conspired to get one of their drivers (Piquet) to crash in order to assist the other's (Alonso's) chances of winning. There's no need for Alonso to know about this conspiracy before or while it was happening because he didn't need to know in order for the operation to be carried out & succeed. Only some of the Renault personnel had to know. Alonso just had to drive the car as usual and pit when he was told by the engineer on the radio. There's literally no reason to tell Alonso about the operation. When conspiracies happen, it's usually just the people needed to carry out the operation who know what's going on (sometimes even some of those people don't really know the whole story as often information is very compartmentalized).
@ogmaqs

Robert Kubica questioned the whole right after getting out of the car on that very day... Just because he felt robbed of a potential win and immediately suggested something's strange. But as far as I know that was in Polish, to the Polish media, so never really got any attention from the worldwide media. And back then nobody would even imagine that someone could have fixed a race this way. The whole circus just moved along.

I was watching the race live when Reginaldo Leme gave the breaking news a year or so later (I'm brazilian, Leme was the guy who first gave the news during a live transmission). It was huge, bc Piquet Jr. took the title away from Massa and Piquet Sr. was the one who gave the info to Leme (Leme and Piquet Sr. are very close and they were waiting some conclusions before informing the rest of the world what took place during that GP)... I mean it what a mess. I like Piquet Sr., bc he's a stand up guy, but as a brazilian I can't never forgive his son for what he indirectly did to Massa. It was the last chance a brazilian had to win the championship.

@Mineirovsky
@Mineirovsky 4 года назад
@@CYMotorsport I assume every brazilian who is up to speed with F1 thinks the same: Piquet Jr. (aka Nelsinho) indirectly took the title away from Massa. Hamilton did a great job, but if we remove Nelsinho away from the equation, Massa would have won the title. Leme, a journalist, said he had a feeling from Piquet Sr. after an interview, so Leme approached him (they're old friends etc.) asking about the accident. Piquet Sr. said he couldn't confirm everything then, but he would keep Leme up to speed in the following months (only the people involved knew what was going on). Then Piquet Jr. lost his sit and Leme gave us the braking news about the staged accident during a live F1 race. The world came to know what was going on under the curtains and the rest we all know. People can't prove it, so it's speculation: Piquet Sr. knew it since the beginning, he did what he did to help and protect his son in the F1 world, place where - in his mind - is very dangerous to a rookie driver. When he figured out he couldn't do anything else to help Nelsinho, he called Leme to gave the full story.

This is why Alonso wouldn’t question an aggressive strategy. The nature of the course would make it very clear that there would be a high probability of a safety car at once in the race. Therefore, Alonso might see the pit call as gambling on such an occurrence. After Piquet crashed, he probably was suspicious but what was done was done and he just needed to get on with racing.

I think it’s fair to assume that in Alonso’s mind the strategy was a dice roll in the hopes of a safety car in general (it is a street circuit after all). He had nothing to lose given his grid position.
@CYMotorsport
@CYMotorsport 4 года назад
This is fair. I had something similar to the effect on a post it note through out the creation of this . It’s important to not condemn him for what I don’t know. What kept me from being more direct with Nando here was that construct precisely. I think it’s entirely possible he didn’t ask more but cynically bc he knew something was up. That’s speculation and not fair to put into the video. But to your point, no need to question the strategy considering he had nothing to lose. In reality I think it was a little more than that but I don’t think anyone checked with him first. I think he was told the strategy and somehow it was alluded it was all handled. But in my heart of hearts I don’t think Flavio or Pat said outright here’s what we’re doing. But that’s where my struggle with Alonso comes in. While it may not be the most damning argument on its face, if he worked out this was going to happen, he could have been an Incredibly central role is saving a young rookies careers who was warped by fear of losing his job and power of his bosses. Pique wasn’t the victim. But it’s easy to manipulate from power. But your comment is a fair one

I still fear that the scenario of this GP might repeat one day. Back then because of the SC rule which forbidded refueling until the cars were packed behind the SC, the drivers who had already pitted had huge advantage over those who hadn't. Nowadays we have the opposite problem. Because of those delta times after activating the SC or the VSC which force the drivers on track to drive at slug speed, those who hadn't pitted yet can spare almost half minute. On few occasions it decided the outcome of the race - Australia 2018, Baku 2018 (almost), Sochi 2019… Plus because of paranoid race directors there is no need of a crashed car, just a car parked in a "right" place.

Great video! I think Alonso knew what was happening. I think the big 'inspiration' of Piquet's crash begun at that year's GP at Germany. Piquet, who had a quite bad rookie season so far, started way down the field. However he started the race with low fuel (obviously to pass, as it is much easier to pass at Hockenheim), and therefore also pitted quite early. Just after he pitted, someone crashed heavily and safety car was deployed. Well, due to every other teams being caught out of the safety car, Piquet was suddenly leading the race! Even though someone passed him at the latter stage of the race, Piquet managed to get a surprise second place. I think that if Briatore and Simmonds were inspired by this race, why shouldn't Alonso know this plan.

Maybe I wasn’t clear. I’m not asking for your view. In fact, I’m asking you to move along. You failed to quote the times where I say SPECIFICALLY IN THE VIDEO WE HAVE NO EVIDENCE. So you’re coming at me like that for no reason. I love your desperate attempt to position the conversation that if “someone disagrees with me” lol. If you knew anything about this channel before going on and on, youd know how ironic that is to say. I adapt weekly to the criticism I ask for so consistently. I prefer people disagree but I ask it be done in constructive, intelligent fashion. You claim you watched the video but then somehow managed to miss I say openly multiple times we have no evidence of his involvement and therefore can’t touch on his guilt. I get millions of views a month. This along with a couple other videos I have to get legal clarification on bc this would be grounds for libel. So if you’d like me to say it again I will: I prefer not to have an audience of people with vindictive tendencies. You clearly have an agenda. Your entire premise is built on not condemning him and how I’ve failed to say that yet I comment on that. So if you choose to purposefully ignore it bc you like Alonso and you can’t admit your rage commented without fully considering I was going to actually engage that’s cool. No problems. I have dozens of really good constructive conversations a day. And sometimes people are this stubborn and they aren’t so good but you’re just passionate about racing let’s say. Sounds good to me. Just move along I can do nothing more for you especially when you won’t acknowledge the facts if they it against your agenda. Just move along

I'm so glad you did this mini doc. Ive seen several others, but you did such a great job of putting the pieces together, and made me think, for the first time, if Fernando knew before hand. I never knew about the light fuel load or the very precise sequence of events. I think the real question is, how would it be possible for all this to happen, and Fernando be in the dark? But in a way, isn't that part of the allure of F1, the team aspect? I may be speaking out turn, because I really don't know, but I don''t think a NASCAR or Indy driver or team would never purposely crash to benefit the team.
@CYMotorsport
@CYMotorsport 4 года назад
Jeff Bock I found myself standing in front of my white board trying desperately to map out how a light fuel load that wouldn’t last more than 12 or so laps would be smart if you struggled to make up only 4 spots. nico’s decision from P9 makes perfect sense to start on sifts. But then why would Alonso stop first? If the experiment failed, you’d stretch your option tyres I’d think. But he put on hard tyres at that pit.. why not run the softs into the dirt for an overcut if the experiment failed? I can’t prove he knew I can’t make out some of the radio or link anything so I won’t say something unfair. But there are a large amount of questions left now. I tried to be hands off in the presentation this time. I approach Alonso content carefully. I Respect his legacy and his fans and I’d rather someone view with an Open mind than if I were to hint at things. Thank you for the feedback. Also, check out the 2013 Federated Autoparts nascar race. Weirdly similar. I believe it was handled appropriately for the most part regarding precedent

@@CYMotorsport in a vacuum you might be able to say Alonzo didn't know. I raced off road in the 80's and early 90's, in SCORE and HDRA (Baja 500/1000, Mint 400 etc) and you know the saying, "if you're not cheating, you're not trying hard enough". Everyone cheated in off road (Robby Gordon was the worst). I think Fernando is awesome and hopes he comes back, but I also think he had to know, and that doesn't diminish my opinion of him one but. A reporter asked him if he'd give the title back, after everything came to light and he said NO! As long as there's sport there will be cheating: steroids, deflating footballs, blackmailing umpires, paying off refs, home court time keepers, and we won't even get into boxing. F1 has cheating scandals every year, not to mention spygate. I just look at it as part of the game, because you're ever going to get rid of it. BUT ITS ALWAYS FUN AS HELL TO LOOK AT

Sorry to say. But it`s not important whether if Alonso knew or not (he didn't have to, in order to make the plan work, that's a fact - and Piquet could have easily inserted him in the wrong seat, legally speaking). What's really important is to actually KNOW that, this race was indeed manipulated (this is the big Why?). Therefore, is totally evident, imho, that all points from this race should have been dismissed. That would have been fair to the drivers, the spectators, the championship, etc. But no... why? Even Alonso didn't lose his points! It is not a matter of who are you cheering for in the end of this discussion. Another thing that claimed my attention was Mosley's attempt to back Pat Simmons up (not the Italian Briatore!). In the end... the only thing that all these actions helped, was Lewis's title and ING to terminate a huge sponsor agreement (bear in mind... the financial crash of 2008... what do you think was happening?). It's important, also, to remind you guys, that Renault was too, in the middle of the Stepney-gate, one year earlier. So... one can imagine how politics were inside FIA, on that era.
@conandrade
@conandrade 4 года назад
Not only in that era... you see... Mercedes won 2009 (double-deck diffuser, anyone?) and set the rules for 2014. Now, you deal with that. hehe
@conandrade
@conandrade 4 года назад
@Richard McCaig I think it's fair to think the way you do (and several of my friends). But i think the result of the whole race/championship is much³ more important (to me) than to judge whether if Alonso is or isn't guilty of anything. To me, it's pretty clear that the plan & order came from above, due to a pressure (that was what i wanted to see in this video!) unknown to us against Renault's F1 team bosses. It is that backstage that i would like to see discussed. All FIA relationship with the sponsors and those in charge of the main teams.

@@CYMotorsport I don't think so tho. It doesnt make sense. Renault needed to convince alonso to stay promising him that he would be able to fight for the championship in 2009. So in order to secure that they came up with this trick of their own. With this win and the Japanese gp win alonso stayed at Renault instead of signing with redbull or brawn gp for a 1 year contract for the 2009 season.
