In late March, we got lucky with a great weather window and set out for Crater Lake to circumnavigate it. We loaded up our 50+ packs, got our permits and onesies and headed out into the back country. On the way around the lake we took a few detours, first to bag Mount Scott, and then to head to the water for an icy dip. We tested our physical and mental limits over nearly 40 miles in ski boots. Many sunburns and blisters later, we made it back to the car. This trip was challenging, but it was also very rewarding to be surrounded by so much intense beauty. The Crater Lake Safari was a once in a life time experience! Enjoy the show!

I did this (without the peak bagging) in 2010, during a late spring snow storm. It was cold, but the storm was on the west side so the snow on the east side of the lake was mostly melted, and the road from the north entrance to the rim village was plowed. I did it in touring xc skis that I had thrifted for $1.50 and boots that I had also thrifted that were 1/2 size too big. We did the whole circumnavigation in 3 days.

We picked up a ride back to park headquarters at like 10:30 PM on the third day. I definitely want to go and do it again. Thanks for sharing!

How do you even train for one of these long trips? I consider myself a rather fit person but there's no way I can do that carrying a heavy pack and walking day after day on minimal sleep.

Honestly, We were probably in less then ideal shape physically. Mainly our training just consists of trying to get out and pushing ourselves on a regular basis. However, for this trip specifically, we did prepare by doing several winter camping trips with long amounts of skinning (like Paulina Peak) to get our gear systems dialed in as much as possible. But after day 3, and once you have blisters and everything just hurts. It becomes more of a mental challenge rather then just a physical one.
