Crawler Gears Off Road - Do They Help? Twin Transfer Case Hilux - 205:1 Final Drive Ratio

Does a low crawl ratio help off road? Well in true LROR style we give you the answer without expert commentary mixed with a whole lot of baloney! We just put it to the test and you can see for yourself.
I had the pleasure of getting behind the wheel on some obstacles and it was fantastic to drive. Eventhough the KM2 tyres where near the end of their life and on the bald side the Hilux just found traction thanks to the slow rotation of the tyres and the down low torque thanks to the gearing.
The Toyota Hilux RN105 has a standard ratio Trail Gear transfer case in the front and a 4.7:1 transfer case behind it with 4.88 diff gears. It also has a Drivetech front disconnect with the front diff pushed forward 35mm. Trail Gear high steer setup with 2 inch lift rolling on 37 inch BFG KM2 tyres. It's twin locked with ARB air lockers.

I have never seen a Hilux that can crawl like that. Those tyres were worn and often wet and it still did fantastic. You would think the load bed overhang would get in the way, but it doesn't. Dropping off rocks downhill might be different though. Very impressive.
@lror
@lror 4 года назад
It wasn't bothered and found traction regardless. Yeah drop offs might take a hit but being almost slow motion shouldn't be an issue. Thanks for dropping us a comment 👍

Crawler gears are great. You can drive much more smoothly and with much more power. Unfortunately only had them at my Disco 2 for 1 year. Due to the poor and inadequate assembly of my garage, my high / low transfer box with the crawler gears broke down much too soon. Thanks for the beautiful video.

Thats max for of the shelf gears. You could add an underdrive unit via the pto and have another set of Low Low range gears. Very rare and hard to find though.

I can scarely believe it. I keep thinking maybe that's just an easy course that looks rough. Makes we wonder why every rig I see struggling in the rocks doesn't have gearing like this.
@lror

Actually decent trails that many of us have struggled on. Have a look for some of our videos at Suzuki Hill Menai, and Waterfall Track Menai for a comparison of other rigs doing these tracks.

a note about your description, typically the 4.7 is in the rear case and the stock 2.7 in the crawl box, due to torque multiplication reasons,not that it cant be done. i also have a twin stick(2wd-4wd) and rear disconnect.

I have seen 4x4 vehicles with insane 580:1 crawl ratios. But I suspect that such crawl ratio is excessive and has very limited uses. What's the most practical crawl ratio?

Looks cool...but how does going this slow make a rig more capable vs a 100:1 crawl ratio? If anything it looks to remove all momentum and wheel speed that is many times needed. Thoughts?
@lror
@lror 4 года назад
100:1 is very low as well and would need reduction gears to achieve that considering most factory low range ratios are around 40:1. Even the Rubicons (jk) are 65:1 and are considered low. The advantage of twin sticks is he can run on a single tc when more speed is needed and has 4 ratios to choose from as opposed to reduction gears with only 2.
@Strizzle81
@Strizzle81 4 года назад
@@lror OK...my stock wrangler JLU 6 speed has a 84:1 crawl ratio and I'm going to regear the diffs to 5.13 making the crawl ratio 105:1. Why would you need any deeper? How does a 205:1 crawl ratio actually make a rig more capable?
@lror
@lror 4 года назад
Yeah the JL has a much lower 1st gear. You probably dont NEED lower than 80 let alone 100 but man that 205:1 is just cool 😎👍
