Good stuff. Nice explanation. Great video man. Heads up. If you drill a couple extra holes on the venders leverage arm. You can get much cleaner and more accurate bends. What you want is the bending arms pin that pushes on the rod to be as close as possible to the pivot

Hey there Harley, as a tig welder I wanted to chime in. You should wire wheel mill scale off your 3/16 rod. Gtaw processes require super clean metal an the mill scale is contaminating your Welds from the get go. Same goes for the paint on you frame to rod weld there. Try cleaning your metal at least a half inch from your joint each way. The metal flow will be much nicer an the brazed welds will have no competition on your tig welds. It was a nice video an I would like to know more about the Autocad programing like cost an what to get. Thanks an keep up the good work.

Great video. I would like to recommend using less heat on both the oxy/acetylene and tig welds. The silver solder will flow better at lower heat and won't require clean up. Overheating the metals causes oxidation and makes for a poor weld.

Hi Harley, great tutorial! I'm a bit of a novice in the steel fabrication department so I've got a question regarding the steel wire that you're using as I am looking at building myself a rollcage as well. The question is, are you using stainless steel or "normal" steel, or is there a specific grade that you'd recommend? Please let me know If you have a chance.Love your chanel, keep up the good work and cheers from down under.

Maybe in honesty Harley; Mention to the young guys arriving here that your adding a roll cage of your design on top of a commercially available retail R/C chassis[Note the black parallel frame rails]There is a big difference there between 'modification' add-on and a full chassis build If you young guys are frustrated with brazing/ soldering problems: Mow some lawns or shovel mums driveway for funds to purchase a small wire feed welder that uses normal household current. A Chinese 'buzz box' will join this small rod or tubing together and cost is about $100 or 55 quid at the discount China tool outlet.

I'm looking at getting into building scaler chassis for myself. I'm gonna go with silver soldering. My question is, how well would silver solder paste work? from what I've seen I think it would work perfectly for this application. I am specifically looking at the muggyweld.com ssq-6. It has a strength of 70,000 psi and can be done with a mapp gas torch. What are your thoughts? Paste or do the classic silver solder way?
@HarleyDesignsInc
@HarleyDesignsInc 9 лет назад
luke stowell I have never used the paste but I have seen it recently because my GF would like to try some jewelry soldering. 70,000 PSI should be plenty strong. You can use the traditional silver solder I use with a MAPP torch as well FYI.

I have a question, I braze with a simple oxygen torch, acid flux, and silver solder. I was wondering if you had ever had any problems with the solder dripping or just not creating a joint. It just kind of melts on there and either drips off or just creates a blob of solder that connects nothing. I was also wondering, can you print the templates on regular sheets of paper or do you have to have a bigger printer?

Everything is out there you just have to know where to look???? Honestly your average person won't understand it trust me. People take college courses to learn this, it's just way to complex to navigate on your own!!! Crawltheworld You sure can. Use any wire feed welder. A good tip is to mask off the area your not welding to avoid flux spatter on the rest of it.0.26 or 0.30 mild carbon wire in a 90-125 amp wire feed welder would be great for this little stuff. And on shielding?.......Read this;I wrap a bit of small dish sponge around near my work area that's slightly damp. Holding it with a wooden clothespin. It leaves no adhesive residue for additional welds on the steel.

I was thinking. For a beginner that's wanting to get started on a budget, JB-Weld should work, no? I've used JB-Weld for guick repairs on my cars; in-fact i repaired an exhaust hanger on my truck back in 2009(?) and it's still holding strong. I've used JB weld for repairs on my RC crawler and i've bashed the crap out of it and it's still holding strong. The only problem i can think of is getting the pieces to stay in place while the jb-weld cures, and it would take longer to complete a build. But i just don't see a problem with the strength being an issue.
