We all know Crayola for their crayons and art supplies, but you may be shocked to hear that's not how they started. They existed for years before ever producing a single crayon. This video talks about how they started and transitioned into the company we know today.
Also, how do you say crayon?

Drew Dapps It wasn’t as as big as pulling out a pack of their scented crayons when they first came out in 1994. Everybody had to have one. I was in the first grade at the time, and really wanted a pack, and finally got one in my Easter basket in 1995... only for one of the other kids to steal them out of my desk shortly after we got back from break. I knew who did it, but I didn’t have any proof.

I remember a few years ago, I saw Crayola branded juice drinks for kids on the clearance shelves at supermarkets. I immediately imagined the taste of crayons in the juice, which I imagine is the reaction most people had, causing them to be hugely unpopular and almost immediately end up on clearance. It's ironic that their amazing success in art supplies actually self sabotages their attempts to enter other markets.
@ttttttttp2
@ttttttttp2 5 лет назад
That tends to happen with a lot of brands. I think Campbell called their spaghetti sauce a Campbell product until they noticed people taking the same issue. They thought it was "soupy" even though in blind taste tests it wasn't. I think the brand they call it is "prego" or something now?

1:04 I am from Germany and i guess we would have something same for pencils which would be "Faber-Castell" and i had kind of same experience as Kid, that i loved my colored pens box. But i have to say that they are kind of premium, i mean they usually sell there pencils in fancy metal boxes, which adds a lot of value. The quality is high, you will never see them break when you sharpen them and they produce a lot of art related products which seems to be good, i am not an artist, but at least everything i tried was really valuable. And i just realized that they are the biggest producer for pencils in the world.... i guess you never heard of them because they are big in Europe, Brazil and Asia, but not in North America.
@SnowWolvesStorm
@SnowWolvesStorm 5 лет назад
We have those here in the USA too. They are usually bought in art stores. They're the best, but they do cost more than regular colored pencils and chalks. 🙃
@Big_Tex

Faber-Castell is a well-known brand in the US. But colored pencils are more of a niche, kids use crayons (which are super cheap) far more than anything else for coloring stuff.
@freundlichermensch7540
@freundlichermensch7540 5 лет назад
Could be that they are also known in the US, I just had a look at there sales graph, and they make like 95% of there revenue in Europe, Asia and Brazil. They provide (at least here in Germany) also those kind of crayon, which are "normal" priced, like 2 euros for 12 crayons. I assumed that Crayola is also more a type of Brand which is better than the dirty cheap stuff you might get at a one dollar shop, and here in Germany Faber Castell is the brand every Kid recognize.

The set was basically the then-usual 64 set plus the 8-piece "florescent" set (where every color was "ultra") in regular size crayons (as opposed to the larger crayons you usually bought them as).
