I know on static line parachutes they have a back up parachute which opens if you are dropping to quickly, normally at 1000 feet. I would assume free fall parachutes have the same sort of thing but probably higher than 1k.

@@DanielMoresyes, in a lot of countries they are mandatory. They have their pros and cons, but most benefit of them being mandatory. Gordon, 1000 feet is a bit high for my taste. You don't want them to open the reserve while your main is still deploying. That will make the main and reserve entangle. So generally the AAD (auto open thing) is set low enough that it's really your last chance and if main and reserve do entangle they won't entangle enough to loose all drag.

Documentation bias. We only see the things that people _did_ record, because there's no record of the times that _weren't_ caught on camera. It's the same reason it seems like only people with cameras noclip into the Backrooms, because people that didn't fall in with a camera have no proof they ended up there.
