King Mackerel (kingfish) show up off Tampa Bay in the months of March and April. They will show up by the thousands off the hard bottom, ledges, peaks, and dropoffs in the area. In this episode I linked up with Captain Pablo of Reel Coquina fishing charters to target kings. We both love these fish for their hard hitting and fast swimming nature. We were also blessed to have captain Joe Marciano from the show Wicked Tuna onboard with us. His years of fishing experience shined as he boated kingfish after kingfish and gaffed a few as well. It was a pleasure to fish with him and he was a really cool guy.
As soon as we showed up on the first spot, the action fired off. We began chumming with live bait and frozen bait. The kingfish immediately responded to the live chum ( pilchards and threadfins ) by viciously attacking the bait and skyrocketing out of the water!! It wasn't long before the @PENNfishing spinfisher reels were screaming from kingfish after kingfish hitting our bait. We even got strikes skipping frozen sardines on the surface. We hooked kingfish from the moment we put baits in the water to the moment until the moment we took the boat off spotlock.
