Keith - you just NAIL IT in this piece. Folks are desperate for FREEDOM in their lives, but they rarely find it. They instead choose the path that society, or their parents lay on them. The Elk Farmers in this video work hard, but they have a sense of freedom that few will ever know. God bless ‘em.

@mg556linked
@mg556linked 5 лет назад
Your comment got me thinking. Is wapiti applied to other deer species? I tended to associate it mainly with elk, but after looking it up, I'm seeing it's direct Algonquin translation is something like "white rump". What would be the other types of wapiti? White tail and mule deer? I'm guessing the moose wouldn't be considered "white rump".

Wow this is so cool. There is an elk farm about 2 miles from my place but they don't cut the antlers in velvet. I'm not sure what they do, maybe they sell for the meat. I like going down there to feed them from the fence it's so fun. During the rut sometimes I use my cow calls on them to see their reaction.
@mg556linked
@mg556linked 5 лет назад
That's a good trick. I like to drive through Estes and try my cow calling on the bulls that tend to be living in town during the winter. I'm betting that farmed bulls, being somewhat less "talked at" by humans, are more receptive to cow calling. The city bulls are so used to humans hollering at them that they barely acknowledge the cow calls, with more than an ear lift or a head turn. It seems they just can't be bothered, but this also tends to be well past the rut.
@internetcrap7
@internetcrap7 4 года назад
That's a good thing. Antlers that are in velvet form still have nerves so the elk will be in pain if cut off like shown in the video, even if they don't physically show it.

I'm assuming for money. Which sounds bad but they shed their antlers naturally anyways so doing it this way helps prevent any injury from scraping to shed their antlers and I believe it helps their antlers grow a little better the next time.
@calvinh.8882
@calvinh.8882 5 лет назад
They told us that in the video.. They cut them before they get to sharp-pointed, to help keep them from harming each other, and they also have to cut them while they're in velvet in order to have them processed and turned into the vitamins or healthcare products that are made from them. They have to make a lot of money in order to feed and tend to them all year.

@Rainkit
@Rainkit 5 лет назад
The antlers are velvet, meaning that the bones that make up the antlers are still growing under a thin covering of fuzzy skin. Right before the rut, the blood gets cut off and the skin dries out and falls off, leaving the antlers.

When I get older i wanna farm elk. As of right now it's November 24 2020 and about 2 weeks ago my grandparents had one of there elk test positive for CWD. Tommorow were loading all them up to go to slaughter. I f***king hate government agency's ran by townies who don't know what its like to farm, raise, and handle these majestic animals. They had 2 bulls that we were letting go hard horn and they both were 8 or 9 point, and good luck getting those guys into a trailer and through the facility and squeeze, so we just shot them and these guys from the CFIA said we were gonna have to wait for a "professional shooter" to shoot them but we have my uncle who has shot about 200 elk bc hey had CWD and these guys were like "your gonna shoot for the heart and lungs" which if your hunting this is true but if you want to drop em immediately and not stress the other bulls out you shoot the neck bone, he fired 2 shots at 2 bulls and dropped them both immediately. Now I don't have time to talk about all the bullsh!t with this but I could go on for hours.

Unlike the average livestock species, Elk is not an essential economic good, rather it is a luxury for those who prefer the taste or health benefits at a higher price. Without a resource need, it becomes hard to find moral reasoning for these farms other than population level conservation goals in some regions. Please provide a counter, I can't seem to find much ethics discussion on the topic other than political stories.

How about, because they want to elk farm. You should mind your own F-cking business, seriously, whatever business you're in, mind that, and stay out of others. Nobody owes you an explanation, on why they're doing what their doing.
