Winter is big spanish time. My theory is that the summer fish are migrating through, following the currents and bait schools down the coast then back up when the water starts to cool down again. The winter fish are all XL mature fish that I suspect aggregate on specific inshore reefs to spawn. They hold tight on specific bits of structure and aren't as dispersed as the summer fish which makes them harder to catch unless you know exactly where they are.

I've tried a lot of different braids and the best is the topwater braid from castmag.co/ super slick, casts for miles, very rarely get a wind knot and then they just pull straight out. Great stuff!

OK thanks, I'll give it a go. What breaking strain braid and leader would you recommend when casting for Spanish?

In this vid Im using pe8 braid and 150lb CAST topwater leader. For spanish you can get away with pe5 and 120lb leader but you'll probably get spanked if a GT turns up.

you mention you look for rocky outcrops that run out,, is it shallow enough so you spot them or by the sounder...tight lines from 10000km away

we get spanish here too but they dont release as soon as you stop them from moving they die so dont really like catching them

The GT's and large predators usually hang in the deeper water up current of a piece of structure. It's the pressure edge on the leading face of a piece of structure that you want to fish. I'll start my drift about 100m - 200m up current of the pressure edge. Once I've drifted over the pressure point and it's out of casting range I'll reset the drift line.

There are a few different species which get referred to as "Spanish Mackerel" around the world, the fish in the vid are Scomberomorus Commerson and are excellent eating. I sometimes release them if they're able to be released but it all depends on how they are hooked.

@@fisherman7834 Iim using the sounder and looking at contour lines on charts. Depths range from 20m - 45m, too deep to see.
