Brakefree is a mod for your motorcycle helmet that helps people on the road behind you realize that you are slowing down. This mod could be great for those of us, like me, that use mostly engine braking while riding since it doesn't trigger your motorcycle's brake lights to come on. With this mod also being installed higher up it adds a more line of sight brake like that would be easier to see from a car. In this video let's get it unboxed and tested to see how well it works!

Totally understandable and this is something I do when riding with a group of other bikes. That technique isn't going to help you if you are coming to an emergency stop and it's also not going to solve the problem of moving your brake light into the eye line of drivers behind you. Just more situations to think about this product working for.

chaseontwowheels but chase...who emergency brakes using engine breaking? I don’t see that point at all lol use the breaks.
@mightybeanstick9872

One thing to consider about this - most bikes have a single rear light which, in most countries, is always on. When you brake (with the brakes :) ), what you are doing is changing the brightness of a light that was already on. Depending on circumstances, this change of brightness might be missed by another driver. This is one reason why cars and other vehicles now have auxiliary brake lights, usually in the rear window etc. which ONLY illuminate when braking AND they are higher up so can be seen further back. That said, this item does seem rather pricey for what it is, and seems rather bulkier than it needs to be...? I do like the mount system. If you often carry a pillion, they could have another bracket on their helmet, and just switch the light over...

I just got the Brake Free. Mounted on a Shoei Neotec. Why not be seen better for safety. A police officer pulled up next to me and pointed to his head and gave me the thumbs up and OK sign. At night I think it about doubles my rear visibility to cars behind me......if it just might save me once....why not. Made well and works perfect. I like it!

On the good side, this provide great visibility to anyone behind your back, though the device seems really big. I do believe that helmet makers should add this feature as standard. Nolan has something pretty much the likes of this with their N-com communication headset and it integrates with the helmet using a tinier light, with the added benefit of all the communications onboard.

I just ordered one. I've had people pull up to me and say they couldn't even see me due to my tailight being in their blindspot or being covered by another vehicle. After hearing that I got super paranoid about being struck by cars that were looking to lane change, especially at night. And yes engine braking is a huge deal on a motorcycle. I usually tap my rear brake to give people a heads up but hey sometimes you forget. Also when I'm not riding and In a car and see other motorcyclists I usually focus on their helmet or body, which proves how well this will catch people's attention.

Thanks for the effort to put this video together. After observing the steps your put the device through during a very bright day, I am convinced that its worth purchasing one of these. It's design beats having to modify a motorcycle to have a similar system installed. I also like the idea of migrating the device to different helmets if needed and design permitting. Glad you included in the video the challenge with the first helmet's air spoiler which much be considered when buying another helmet. Awesome!!!

For under $200, and the fact that I only need a small plastic mount to move it to another helmet...That's actually pretty tempting. Good video. Chase on Two Wheels thanks for a nice RU-vid video of the Brake Free product that I beta tested for the company back in December/January 2019/2020. I wrote up a review earlier on my blog, and I continue to stand by everything I said there. REVIEW: BRAKE FREE MOTORCYCLE TAIL AND BRAKE LIGHT The product has worked flawlessly for about 10,000 miles on my helmets (I have two of the products one on each of my helmets). I paid for the units through the Indegogo campaign, and I did not receive compensation as a beta tester. I did provide the company with daily ride reviews, including weather, temperature, riding conditions, length of ride, and other information. I chose to be a beta tester because I ride a lot of miles in all conditions other than subfreezing weather with snow and ice here in Portland, Oregon, the land of violent riots! Modes: 1. Stealth - the lights are minimized, but the brake light lights on deceleration or braking. 2. Flashing - the lights flash in low power mode until you brake or decelerate, then it lights in the very bright braking mode. 3. Normal - the lights are constantly on until you brake or decelerate, and then the brake lights light in very bright braking mode. Again, after about 10,000 miles, the units continue to work flawlessly. Brightness The braking mode is very bright even in daylight, but at night they are impossible to miss. Auto Drivers Responses I get comments on the unit most times I ride, and I ride daily for about 2+ hours, perhaps an hour and a half in the winter for a total of about 20,000 miles per year. I have noticed that auto drivers' behavior is different now that I use the Brake Free on every ride. Drivers stay a bit further back and tend to notice I am slowing even when I am not braking. If you've read the blog you know I've been hit by autos in the past, the last time about two months (October) before I got the Brake Free beta test unit on the freeway in Ukiah, CA. I consider the Brake Free the best single free-standing safety mod available since it is completely portable and can be shifted from helmet to helmet, and it can be used on any ride whether you are riding your bike, test riding a bike, or riding a friends bike. The unit goes with you, and if you have additional helmet mounts, you can apply them to nearly any helmet you might need to wear. None of this can be said for units that install on the bike to make the brake lights flash. Another nice feature is the Brake Free places the brake light at the helmet level and makes it far more visible than it is at the tail of the bike. All without wires or attachments to the bike itself. Accelerometer The Brake Free units work via an onboard accelerometer that senses when you are accelerating or slowing, the brake lights are triggered when the unit senses you are slowing whether you are applying the brakes or not. This makes the unit drop-dead simple, and it always lights the brakes when you slow. Even if your brake light is burned out, the unit will continue to function as it should. Length of Charge I've ridden up to 9+ hours at a time, and the units continued to work in flashing mode. Flashing mode is the only mode I use. The estimate of 10-12 hours of battery-run time is accurate in my experience. I set up my helmet stand with two USB charging ports/cables, and I keep both helmets charged. I've never had a problem with charging or battery-run times. Since I ride about 20,000 miles per year, I used to feel like I was wearing a target. The problem is too many drivers do not pay sufficient attention to their surroundings while driving. As I said earlier, driver response to my use of the Brake Free units has been very positive with drivers giving me more rear cushion and noticing that I am slowing or braking. Since using the Brake Free units, I have not been rear-ended or had to dodge a near-miss rear-end collision, that used to be a much more consistent problem. I also get many comments from drivers that the unit makes it much easier to see me from the rear. The feedback has been uniformly positive. Personal Recommendation Buy one. The unit is well built, durable, weatherproof enough for a rider in Portland, Oregon, who rides 20,000 miles per year, and it significantly and positively changed the behavior of car drivers following me. The units are available for sale from Brake Free here: Smart Brake Light, Brake Free I advise buying the unit and the spare mounts, that way if you need to swap helmets or want your pillion to wear the Brake Free unit (the front rider should not wear the unit!) you can mount the Brake free quickly and easily. I like it! I think it looks best on a solid color helmet like the black one worn in this video. I think ill trial it on my "74" Shoei.

There is a shoei rf1400 mount that is about three times as thick as the standard mount, I had to have it for my helmets, I’m thinking if you got that one it would fit on the ruroc helmet.

Great idea for safety purposes and etcetc also it’s not ugly or bulky , I mean it’s a bit of a bulk on the helmet but you have to have something in order to work but it is pretty stylish. So it’s a great idea for safety

I'm all about safety, and I can't get enough lights, bright clothes, and helmets. Reason: I see people who see me, and they hit that brake a second time to wait until I've gone past them. This stuff works. And, except for 20 something year olds, most of us would like to ride another day. Each to their own. Enjoy the ride.

When I engine brake I usually apply the front brake just enough to trigger the brake light

Chase great review & I love your DYI hook-up you made for your bike while doing this review 😜👍 I also think you could adapt that brake free light to your Ruroc by cutting & heating up a pc of PVC piping to match the contours of your Ruroc 2.0 helmet by using a contouring tool that matches the shape of almost everything 1st do your helmet then cut the shape out of wood then when heating the PVC and molding it on the wood it should conform to the shape of the helmet, then with a file or rasp you could file the edges down to match the inside contours of brake free light, once that is done, 3M doublesided tape the PVC pc to the helmet, then on top of that you attach the brake free light, you also may need to sand or channel out a flat area on the PVC to attach that little clip thats included with the light, anyway Chase, that's how I would approach it. Anyway like what your doing here good stuff. 😀✌ Agree: it would look better on a Ruroc

Two things I’ve learned from aviation is that you can’t put a price on safety and redundancy is key. 169.99 isn’t even that much considering how much you should spend on gear and if the strobe light is legal in your state then there’s really no reason to not get it. Honestly if you don’t have enough money for nice gear then you don’t have enough money for a bike in general.

Riding and flying have a lot in common, situational awareness and such,,

@@maximilliancunningham6091 As a new rider and military history fan, modern motorcycles remind me most closely of WW1 aircraft. The horsepower, top/cruising speeds, minimal controls, minimal gauges, the need to remain above a stall speed, and seating for one or two people are all similar. The back-to-basics stick-and-throttle style of flying should be similar, but I'm not an aviator.

I have to say that I like the idea. Any way you can gain extra visibility isn't a bad thing. I'd be inclined to buy one and try it.
