It is mid summer 2022, and time for another weekend camping trip out in the mountains of Washington State. This weekend, we spent the night out in the Wenatchee Mountains, north of Ellensburg, Washington, and in the morning, went exploring in the Wenatchee National Forest, south of Blewett Pass on Hwy 97.
On the first day, we stop at Wild Rose Day Use area and stood over at the Tieton River. We passed through the orchards of the Naches Valley and hopped over to Yakima, where we entered the south end of the Yakima Canyon on Hwy 821. The Yakima Canyon drive is about 20 miles of paved highway, and features impressive Basalt Cliffs extending 1000s of feet above the canyon floor. However, it was hot and arid in the canyon, so we made our way north back into the Wenatchee National Forest to find a dispersed campsite for the night.
In the morning, we contended with a bit of rain and thunder, but still had a great time exploring the pine and larch trees covered forests in the high elevations of the Eastern Cascade Mountain Range. We stopped at the Discovery Trail trailhead in the Swauk forest for a short visit and soon decided that the Swauk forest was worthy of an entire separate trip. After taking a few photos at the trailhead, we got back on the highway, heading back west over the Cascades to return home.
