A playthrough of a prototype for the unreleased NES game, Crazy Land.
Originally slated for publication by NTVIC in 1991, Crazy Land would've be the North American release of KID's Doki! Doki! Yuuenchi Crazy Land Daisakusen (ドキ!ドキ! 遊園地 クレイジーランド大作戦) for the Famicom.
The game's North American release was canceled, but it did show up in PAL regions in 1993 when American Softworks published a reskinned version under the name The Trolls in Crazyland ( • The Trolls in Crazylan... ). Please check out that playthrough if you'd like to see my overview/review of the game.
Aside from the changes to the title screen, Crazy Land is the same game as its original Japanese release, but I thought it would be interesting to document this prototype. I wanted to play it after seeing it previewed in Nintendo Power, and for a long time I wondered what happened to it.
If any of you guys found yourselves in the same boat, here's your answer!

This unreleased prototype is the North American version of the game known as The Trolls in Crazyland in Europe. Anyone else remember seeing the preview for it in Nintendo Power?

I do! Volume 29 I think, with the screenshot of the roller coaster loop level. 8 year old me thought it looked like the best thing ever

Funnily enough, that Trolls version also had a planned NTSC release, which, like Crazy Land, had the release pulled at the last second. Makes ya think huh

This game was released in Japan and was named Doki! Doki! Yuuenchi. It was also produced by the Chinese on pirated cartridges and it had a name Disneyland 2. This game is one of my favorite games as a child.

Prior to learning about this video of yours, NintendoComplete, I had no idea that North America was really close to getting a release of _Doki! Doki! Yuuenchi: Crazyland Daisakusen_ . Personally, I would have never known about this game had it not been for emulation. That last roller-coaster stage can eff right off to me. I would have loved to have played this in my youth. I also had no idea that Capcom composer Harumi Fujita (credited as Mrs. Terumi) had something to do with this game. Keep up the good work.

I remember I played this NES game I got in the yellow cartridge for one Famiclone game console we got from the street market in the beginning of the 90s. I really liked to play this platformer game, even when I reached the way harder levels. 🙂 The chiptune music is very good, I listen to this game's music on RU-vid if I'm feeling sad. 🙂 I didn't know this NES game was planned to release in the US region besdies Japanese region.

Хорошее прохождение. Играл в детстве в эту игру; покатушки в космосе - отдельный вид хардкора.

This game looks very interesting. Is it just me, or are the graphics on a whole other level than most

First off, I think this game is underrated. The art style is very cute, the soundtrack is *AMAZING* and the (simplistic) gameplay is enjoyable. I'm a fan of the weapon/damage system; The more hits you take, the stronger your weapons will be to compensate. From blue softballs to red soccer balls. Secondly... Where on earth did you find this NTSC-U prototype? *EDIT:* The proto is downloadable on Hidden Palace since December of 2022. It's been around for well over a year and I didn't even know about it until now.🤣

I first heard about this game in a TAS video and I looked up the wiki page for it and it’s such a shame this didn’t come out in the US cause it would’ve been one of those neat obscure lil gems that you may have only heard from your friends or some kid across the neighborhood

KID did solid work. The samples on the music are a bit much for me, though. Too noisy for my liking in an NES soundtrack.

This is what Tiny Toon Adventures 2: Trouble in Wackyland should have been.
@Loader2K1

I think I would have much rather played a rehash of _Tiny Toon Adventures 1_ on the NES with Buster Bunny in an amusement park than what Konami gave us. While it was by no means terrible, I liked the basic gameplay of the original game over the mixture of gameplay genres in _TTA2_ myself.

@@Loader2K1Me too. It looked and sounded great, but I was pretty meh on the gameplay.

Interesting that the North American release has the original soundtrack. I thought the Japanese version relied on Famicom only sound extension hardware or something, so we'd have gotten the Trolls in Crazyland version of the soundtrack if we got this game in the US. A lot of the music is much faster in the PAL version, maybe they were made faster so it would sound right at 50Hz?
@NintendoComplete
@NintendoComplete Месяц назад
I imagine that the PAL version was missing the samples because the shift to 50hz would've messed with the pitch they played at.

@@NintendoComplete Is that a known thing for PAL NES releases? I know Sunsoft and Konami's later NES releases were super heavy on samples, is the pitch all off on those?

I'm glad they kept the orchestra hits for the US proto. They were mostly absent in the Trolls version. What gives, why was Europe shafted? It's an awesome soundtrack but without those extra samples it falls kind of flat.
