@@Ub3rpwnage44It seems like it, but the difference (I’m just playing devils advocate) is when if he had a job in real life when he goes to his job, almost all of things are out of your control and I mean you have a boss telling you what to do, etc. But, if you choose to create a life that is a lie, you’re are in the driver’s seat the whole time, yes you are creating this job because you have to jump through hoops for your parents, but you’re in control and for people that have these kind of personality disorders, control is very important.

This is exactly how I would have responded. Even if I was tired from a long day at work or the grocery store was out of the way. The thought that my son would be at home plotting my death is just unfathomable. Poor woman 😢

I do joke with them though and say - Hey, if you flunk out of college and feel some way about it, please write me a letter or something. The older I get, the more and more these types of stories bother me. I couldn’t fathom taking advantage of my parent’s trust like that. Just seeing the mothers text “k I can :)” breaks my heart. I imagine all the times my own mother has texted me and gone out of her way to pick something up after work… even thinking about using that against her in such an evil way hurts my soul.

I remember hearing this story a while back. I was halfway in when things started to sound familiar, and then I knew exactly how it ended. I think you did a really great job portraying this story. It was a fresh take, and definitely had me going.

I watch True Crime, and it's amazing how often the most minute details will trip up criminals. This kid was not wired right. It's amazing how two brothers, equally cared for and loved, evolved so differently. When I hear things like this, I always wonder if it is possible to be born bad?

Miniscule .. 😊,yeah this a horrible story of two great parents who devoted love, time, money and so proud of their kids, home, life!! They DEFINETLEY did not deserve to be killed because one of their children were so desperate and afraid of the massive spider web of lies that he believed murdering his life giving parents was the correct course to take. My God the mindset you would have to have to set up this web of lies, the time put into the lies... he could have turned around his life easier than what it took to come up with his devilish scheme. I believe his parents spirit is still with the other son and will meet again someday. As for the killer psychopath son.. there is no redemption, he has no remorse, he has no respect and I believe that an event so wicked as this deserves the death penalty. At the least they need to study him while alive and after passing study his brain to maybe figure out what exactly went wrong with this boy. Imagine having this small baby, raising him with love & pride. Helping him up as he trips when learning to walk, helping him through highschool, dating and giving him advice then off to college and monetary loans to help him... then loud bang then darkness, my lord they deserved so much better. RIP❤ Sorry for book😂😂

My sons were 25 months apart. Both born in wedlock, both were sent to a Christian school through 6th grade. Somewhere they diverged...one became a cop, one became a coke dealer. Among other things. He was arrested a few times for misdemeanors but never for the drugs. He finally straightened out. At this point, both kids have great jobs, great marriages, houses, and wonderful kids. So that's my experience. I am grateful.

One thing sticks out... Why would Bart make real appointments with actual counselors? Why wouldn't he just tell Chandler that he had, and then depending on Chandler's response say, "I know everything..." Why would he drag Chandler to a meeting just to expose him when it wasn't really necessary? If Chandler denied it, he could always go back and get proof. Weird.

The way he said, "Pick up soda on your way home" says a lot about their relationship. He used and abused her and she coddled him. It was soo devastating to see this case from "the unaware girlfriends" perspective,she seemed really supportive,like she was still in denial after he got locked up,but awhile after she completely cut him off from her life. I heard from another channel that she apparently got herself a dog,but she has gone into complete "hiding" from social medias,wich i totally understand. She is soo sweet,i hope she manages to recover,move on and become the happy,bubbly and energetic,positive young woman she was before all this. She will probably not trust another guy again just like that,poor thing. But with time hopefully. This guy seemed soo harmless at first,but oh man......the personality once his guard was down,and all the evidence pointed towards him. Gave me the chills.

They wouldn't. This is far too much work for a "dead beat". All the elaborate accounts, characters, phones, and then killing them and disposing of their bodies would've been a lot of work, just imagine the effort of hacking an adult into pieces, then another, then sitting by a fire for days slowly trying to burn them up... He's obviously emotionally dead, but it's still a tremendous amount of work. So he definitely didn't do it to be a slacker. He must have some very serious mental deficiency like psychosis or schizophrenia. It's nothing like a normal person who decided to do this for some perceived gain. He's not that human.

@@divyangverma9880 a young woman whom a couple had helped raise as a child when her parents threw her out came back when she was a young adult with some friends, robbed the old people and then, for no reason at all, slowly buried them alive. They found dirt in the people's lungs from the woman throwing dirt on their faces and laughing and they were covered and still screaming before they died. Why put people through such agony and terror for no reason, especially when they had been kind to you? Maybe rob them, maybe even kill them, but why be so brutal? Clearly she was insane, but still. She and her accomplices were caught and convicted.

My ex used to lie to me about absolutely everything from pets he had as a kid, (which his mother called out as lies), to most notably would lie about being at work and then something would always "go wrong" with him receiving his paychecks including a staged robbery he did to himself by breaking car windows and stuff. That was a wild ride that I'm glad is far in the past.

He looked me in the eyes as he choked me and i saw his eyes turn black as I passed out hearing my baby cry thinking it was the last thing I'd ever see and hear. Only to wake up hours later and frantically have to search for him and my child. It's a part of my past I'm glad is over

Not like he could’ve ever imagined his own son was going to murder him over it. And I think the plan to go to the meeting was a good idea. And would’ve taught the son a lesson, had he been any other normal person instead of a crazy killer.

@Ju Gru You know what, that IS a good point, that it may have helped the situation. Maybe, maybe not, though. His son is a psycho-killer. I don't blame anyone but him, but usually stopping the pressure and tension and expectation is a good idea with psychos. Chandler would have lied some more, of course, might have followed through anyway, sure, but at least odds would have been smaller. I don't know what the dad was contemplating; Maybe just knew he would get lied to and oh-so tired of his son's b.s.... But I definitely don't blame him. The parents seemed like rarely wonderful people to keep a house in order, which is not something many of us bother to do with what we own, ourselves.

The thing I love about Mr Ballens stories is that you never see what's coming. As he narrates the story - you find yourself trying to guess what happened and trying to work out what happened & who or what was involved. see the problem is we dont know what kind of parents they were behind closed doors. My parents were very abusive both emotionally and phyiscally but if you ask other people in my family or people outside the family they will tell you that there were loving caring supportive etc when thats not the case at all. This is what happens I guess when you live with a total psychopath that isn't inclined to kill but he WILL murder his family the moment they become more of an inconvenience than is worth the trouble. Not only is Chandler's life a lie, that entire family dynamic was a lie because his parents thought they had a son that actually loved them and cared about them.

Ah, Chandler Halderson. I’m familiar with this case but the way you told it was so compelling. Also, IMO the most tragic part of this case was his mom’s final “K I can :)” text. His parents loved him so much and did so much for him, and he would rather kill them than admit the truth to them.

Compassion is the key ingredient for raising children. You have to teach them compassion by the time they're 8 years old. Having a consistent routine and at least one person in their corner is also essential and minimizing trauma as much as is possible. The one thing you can't really control is if they are born with psychopathy and there are ways to tell early on and there are psychologists and psychiatrists that can help the child not turn into a criminal - but psychopathy is pretty rare. Odds are you will not have a child with psychopathy which is basically a type of brain damage/disorder they are born with.

I’d say that his parents created this monster- it’s unfortunate but true that all of their actions & inactions throughout his life whether early life trauma or what but their raising of him led to their son using them until he couldn’t use them anymore. The nail in the coffin was the shame of them finding out he’s a deadbeat all this time, which most likely sent their son into a manic survival mode & instead of owning up to his lies- he decided to throw his parents (which were merely a means to an end) to the side (by killing them) & instead of facing the now, ultra shame- he decided to do what he does best- & that’s to continue the lying & keep his facade going as long as possible. I’m not an expert- this is only my analysis from the story.

@Angelofdusk13 It's not just kids killing their parents It's anyone who has constructed a complete web of lies about their life and doesn't want it to be revealed. Lots of times it's a husband who ends up killing the wife and the whole family because he's created a web of lies. These pathological liars are also cowards and often turn violent when it's revealed because they don't want to admit it. The parents definitely should not have spoiled Chandler but this is all on him.

You know. . .something like this has got me wondering about someone that I went to HS with. His mother was super sweet and open-minded. The last time that I saw her was when I was working and she came into the store to buy some new shoes(Payless). A few years later her bones were found(dumped) outside of Fiesta Texas Six Flags. The weirdest thing about him was that her death is highly questionable. He landed up living at home and helping his mom out because his dad left him and his brother to care for her; regardless something isn't right about the whole story. He also had is aggressive girlfriend move into the house, though his description of her was that she demanded she was to move in. I dunno the rest. . .but from what I remember. . .Body Language has "tell-tell signs".

Yes! A few weeks ago I watched the video where he was talking about a strange kid at a prom and eating cheeseburgers, and some weird happenings at his apartment a couple of years later… my brain recognised the story and thought oh this sounds like a Dahmer copycat. No, he was actually talking about Dahmer but the way he told it had me convinced until the last minute it was a copycat lol. MrBallen is very good at weaving the details into a cohesive engaging story form.

As a GenX we had very little supervision but to much discipline to be open and honest w our parents. When i was 10 my sister who was 13 wasn’t paying attention to me and so i left on my bike at 8pm to blow off steam. About 30 min into my ride a man pulled up and asked me where a certain trailer park was. I thought i knew and before i knew it i was in his car w my bike in the back. He immediately got on the freeway and took me about 7 miles away. When he exited the freeway he drove up a dirt road to a clearing. He parked the car close to a cliff. He kept asking if i knew what he was capable of and was i scared. I was. I told him that I wasn’t bc he was a nice man and he wouldn’t do such things. After a couple hours he decided not to assault me. We got back in the car and he started driving back towards where he picked me up. Along the way he offered me money to sit closer to him (bench seat) i said politely “no thank you” soon we reached where he picked me up and said he was a college student who was doing a study and he had also taken a older woman before also and he didn’t harm her either. He got my bike out, handed me $2 and told me to stay quiet. I rode my bike home so so very fast!! My sister was on the phone still and hadn’t noticed i left at all. My mom came home from her bartender job about 3 am. I was still awake worried that she knew. She didn’t and i kept absolutely quiet not telling anyone until i was about 22. Crazy!!

This has to be one of the most ridiculous true crime stories I've ever heard. It's very sad I feel so sad thinking about the mom happily going to get soda for her brat son not knowing how evil he was. Even after all his lies she bent over backwards for him. Like dude your motive was..emarrassment? The thought of actually having to WORK or use your brain?

There was also the matter of around $1,000,000 in inheritance. Mitchell is lucky, if you call the murder and dismemberment of his parents at the hands of his brother lucky, that he wasn’t living with them at the time. I have no trouble believing Chandler would have killed him too.

Of course!!! It is a combination of the usual suspects genetics and birth to 3 yr.old environment. Parent, nursery school teachers and community members recognize something off with a toddler need to let someone know.Early intervention sometimes makes a difference. This the main reason I find “family secrets” so toxic and dangerous.I often wonder what percentage of Ancestry, DNA generational family trees have identified a family relation in the last 7-15 generations do not find someone with serious problem. To me it does add up. This is a crazy story, I've had cousins that lied about going to college. Which probably happens more often than most think. But this kid took it to the next level, he deserves everything he will endure for the rest of his life.

Yesss. Like I think this story is so messed up because it’s crazy relatable. Like those parents could be mine… they loved their children, my mom was and is kinda a hovering mom no matter old I am and my dad has always gone out of his way for me and the there for sure was a total fear of disappointing them so my brother did great and was also an Eagle Scout and I struggled and then got it it together. Neverrr in a million years could I imagine doing what this kid did and it’s just like scary and disconcerting and heartbreaking because he has the type of parents that would’ve been mad about his lies sure, but they would’ve gotten over it because they loved him but he couldn’t deal with disappointing them so he just murdered them and chopped them up… that’s messed up

Knowing that the first half of the story was Chandler's fallacy the entire time made listening to it even harder. I really feel for his family, Bart and Krista truly loved him and only wanted the best for him. I still can't believe people will go _this far_ to protect lies. I'd much rather be known as a liar than a murderer, I don't get the logic.

Well, he was stupid enough that he thought he would get away with the murder because everyone would just think his mom and dad disappeared on their visit up to their lake house. Therefore no one would know he was a murderer AND no one would know he was a liar because he killed his dad who he was sure was the only person who knew he was a liar. So he would be known as neither. He would just be this super neat, super smart, super successful person he pretended to be.

I live in DeForest and covered this story on a podcast earlier this year. You did such an amazing job structuring the story! I've heard other people tell the story on various podcasts and almost everyone got things wrong. I watched the whole trial- twice! And you nailed everything while leaving out the right unnecessary details. Perfect storytelling as usual.

What are you talking about? He left out SO MUCH. He didn’t even mention the farm or cress. And the fact that the parade was on the 3rd was something chandler had actually pointed out to the police. It did NOT break the case open. What broke the case open was the farm and Cress telling police about his weird visit. This has to be a fake comment, it couldn’t be more wrong

John is SO impeccable and beyond impressive at story telling!! It's a lost art in this tech driven timeframe.. where communication and expressiveness is getting sketchy. This experience gives the joy of when stories were told centuries ago - which was their modern day entertainment. I just love it. I've always been intrigued by true crime and human interest content.. so even when I'm aware of the subject matter, I still love to have it from his perspective with the info and highlighted details that made it intriguing and interesting enough for him to present. I just think this is a home run and super smart, savvy and innovative based on alternative options. I am so enthused bc I just did not expect to be such a huge fan, as soon as I found this; this now being most of the content I get on RU-vid for.

The full trial is on YT. The way they proved what times he was burning them in the fireplace was based on a neighbors camera. It's barely a few pixels wide, but they matched the window from the fireplace room frame by frame that night and you can see the fire build up, and die, and build up again and then burn out of control before going out. That's when the fireplace glass shattered. Their fat cells were rendering out and having fans blowing in caused an "oven fire" or "grease fire". He tried to throw water on it but we all know what happens when you throw water on a grease fire. He was proven guilty more detailed than anyone else I have ever seen. Day by day and hour by hour for a whole week he left evidence EVERYWHERE.

He was absolutely one of the dumbest people I’ve ever witnessed~ let alone trying to cover up a double homicide! I feel so sad for his brother, ex-girlfriend & extended family. Some people question Bart & Christa’s parenting. I honestly believe they were loving, caring, supportive parents. Perhaps naive and a little too soft, but in no way abusive. And considering Kat’s testimony, I don’t think she had ANYTHING to do with it or knew about it, no matter how many people may think she did.

I totally agree! I’ve heard and read about this from a few different places and I didn’t realize this was the same story until about 12:30 into it. Ballen includes a lot of first hand accounts, points of views, and details and thoughts of the people in the stories that no other place has. I don’t know where he gets these tidbits of info that no one else includes but it definitely makes for a much better version of the story!! ❤️

Kimbyrleigha has a three part deep dive on this case which totals about 6 hours. Incredible story the six hours will disappear in a flash. This case brought me back to true crime, but I still watched the whole Mr Ballen video.
