Unboxing the Ayaneo Air 1S with a full test and review of the gaming chops, to see if this is the best thin and light portable handheld console of 2023. The Aya Neo Air 1s is incredibly small vs the Steam Deck and Asus ROG Ally, yet boasts beefy AMD Ryzen 7 performance and gorgeous OLED visuals. There's even an Ultra Thin model if you want it even lighter!
Those gaming specs are pretty good considering the Switch OLED size, with an AMD Ryzen 7840U in charge plus 32GB RAM. The Ayaneo Air 1s also sports a Full HD AMOLED display, which is crisp and boasts sharp contrast. It's smaller vs the Steam Deck but also poppier and more detailed too.
Plus, the Aya Space 2 UI is finally much improved! The Aya Neo Air 1s is much easier to configure, and simpler to get to grips with. At any time when gaming you can customise the performance, display and other bits, to suit whatever game you're playing.
The Ayaneo Air 1s is certainly one of the best handheld consoles from these guys that I've tested, so here's hoping we get some more top devices before 2023 is done. Check out my reviews of other portable gaming consoles including the 2s, Asus ROG Ally and Steam Deck!

More to do with the device than him. Ayaneo doesn't have a large fan base at all in the UK and Europe compared to something like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally.

So a wee bit off topic. In my native mother tongue Gikũyũ, a language remarkably similar to lingua franca Swahili, Ayaneo _( _*_Aya nĩ o_*_ in Gikũyũ - _*_hawa ndio_*_ in Swahili)_ translates as _"These are the ones."_ Ayaneo - These are the ones. If they didn't have a tagline, they can have this one.

There's meant to be a update to the Air Plus in the near future with the same 7840u with a 6 inch screen; although it won't be AMOLED, just a regular LCD panel. Bigger battery though.

Looks great, I wish it was cheaper $600 is out of my league - I still use my PS VITA for movies, music, & games when I'm on the go. I would love to play steam games on the go too but that's a steep price.

I wanna buy this but my Ayaneo 2 cracked near to where the power button is just through using it on high TWP, and it seemed to be a regular issue with that device. I'm guessing this might well have the same issue.

My biggest concern is whether the device can be repaired if you get a bad one! It's kinda nuts that this device score higher on CPU than my desktop gaming PC :D Can it run an EGPU though?

It has USB4 which is essentially thunderbolt 4 and work with thunderbolt 3, 4 and USB4 devices. But check the specifications in details.

Umm this has an AMOLED screen and the Z1 Extreme is pretty much the same as the 7840u in the Air 1S without the native AI capabilities and slightly different power curve tuning....

@@mattythehat yes, this has AMOLED. Only mentioned OLED in my initial comment because most other Ayaneo models have an IPS screen, so it's quite possible that if they ever release a new model with Z1 Extreme (I prefer this as it is more optimized for handheld, being able to set it to a lower watt would make the battery last longer) it wouldn't be paired with an OLED display.

@@dan9806 I've not seen a direct comparison between say an ROG Ally and other 7840u in terms of FPS/Watt but I can't imagine there would be a really significant efficiency improvement - it might mean you could run something at 10W rather than 12W, but that's not going to net more than a couple of mins of additional gaming depending on the battery size. Maybe ThePhawx has done that analysis - I'm happy to stand corrected if it does make a significant difference.

@@mattythehat from what I remember, 7840u can only go as low as 15w while the Z1 extreme can go even lower at 9w, so I think the difference should be more than just a couple of mins (but of course nowhere near an hour) with same battery size. Anyway, just my personal preference to be able to run a handheld gaming device on battery life for as long as possible.

It's smaller, lighter and significantly more powerful, also it has Windows. I bet many people would pay a bit more for these features.

It's always funny to see steam deck fanboys comment this under every video when most of them bought the 650 dollar version. And also all because you're paying 400 for a steam deck doesn't mean it's the same price in every country.

Only thing is the price that stopping me, as well as the OLED screen, I recon it would draw a lot more battery. even though the steam deck runs linux and so theres less games supported, it still seems for most poeple a better option.

From what I just read, OLED uses less battery than standard LCD. That was just from a quick Google search, though; I'm not an expert.

My kids both have a Nintendo switch. Me I cannot stand the joy cons cheap tacky and non adult friendly.... Invest in the hori split pro's. I am on my second steam deck due to first ones buttons failing. I will however be looking into purchasing the Ayeneo

Thank you. The steam deck is a great thing but it's not the second coming of christ. Other handhelds bring different things to the table that we want to see.
