Two great Roman sites this week as we look at the crazy world of religion in Roman Britain. There are so many Romano British gods and deities, and of course, beliefs changed over the nearly 400 years of Roman rule. This is not going to be a case of Roman gods explained - it is RU-vid, after all - but hopefully we can show how in Roman Britain, unlike elsewhere in the Roman empire, there was a unique conflation of Roman gods and Celtic British deities.
Our locations this week are the fabulous Roman fort of Aesica - Great Chesters in new money - and Coria, the most northerly town in the Roman empire. Full name: Corstopitum. Modern day name: Corbridge.
The museum at Corbridge has some great exhibits, including the Corbridge Lion - which some cite as an example of changing beliefs relating to funerary monuments. We're not convinced by that. If you visit the site, make sure you check out the Corbridge hoard, too. As for that dodecahedron...
Another ADVISORY this week: this video contains a brief sequence of terrible singing AND a truly ghastly - not at all Woke - impression. We take no responsibility for any distress caused.
Finally, a quick chat about "buy-me-a-coffee" ideas - and whether that's a good idea.
